I know he said he wants a unanimous decision but how long before they can come back and ask for a majority verdict?
if there was huge disagreements on certain babies you would think they would be asking more questions, yet we only have had 2 so far.
Asking for time off next week doesn’t look good for a verdict anytime soon though.
worst scenario and its hung jury, we could be here for another 10 months, poor parents…

Smoke breaks is standard. I’m not a smoker myself and I hate it, but I think they should all be allowed comfort breaks. It’s a long time sitting in that room discussing (I know from experience). No they don’t all get up and go when one leaves for a pee or a cig, they just aren’t allowed to deliberate without all members present.

If I was a juror and I'd booked something thinking the jury wasn't sitting the following week, and was then told it was sitting after all, I'd just silently think to myself "oops, better cancel that then". I wouldn't think of saying anything, because I'd realise I was only in that situation due to a false assumption on my part.

But to think these lot then say "oh but I've got something booked now, sorry" shows they've got more front than Brighton.

We’re flying through so I can sort one if @Tofino is busy but I have a busy weekend with driving etc which is probably a good thing as I should dip my head out. I was crying laughing with last nights craic but I can’t take the ‘this definitely means they can’t reach a verdict’ posts atm.

I think you're right, wouldn't they be called 'comfort breaks'?

If you're a smoker, you can go for a cig, if you're not, you can have a quick wee or just stretch your legs.

Exactly why this whole thing is a pisstake. It’s pretty obvious she’s guilty once you put all the evidence together. Just bleeping get on with it and send her down

Quoting myself but this is why I’m thinking there may be a few difficult jurors because it’s so bleeping obvious she’s guilty so what’s taking so long?! There must be some dense jurors who aren’t backing down so I imagine the other jurors are all pissed off thinking ‘why should I miss my appointments because juror 5 is a wanker?’

What happens if there is a hung jury? Would they restart the whole trial again or are they not allowed to do that/ do they have to take that as a NG verdict?

Definitely no verdict today. They thought they'd be 'off court' next week not that court would be finished and done so they must be nowhere near a verdict.

I don't begrudge them breaks if anything the fresh air will help them refocus . I just really hope these poor families get justice soon . It's winding me up so they will be beside themselves I'm sure

They’re just taking the piss (or some of them are at least!). What do they think this is?? Hurry the f up. Absolutely fed up.

The way jurors deliberate seems so outdated. Surely it’s easier for them to have longer days for the sake of deliberations so they can get it over with sooner? Just let them start early and talk until they agree (obviously letting them go home when it gets late). I’d rather do that than have over a month of half days in court

I think I'm in the minority but I really don't think it was a health issue with the dismissed juror, I think it was more likely they are getting married and going on honeymoon. They probably informed JG of this way ahead of time and advised they wanted to continue in order to try and get a verdict beforehand but it hasn't happened. The rest of them probably thought "bonus, week off then" but JG has said, "soz fella, this needs wrapping up, we can't wait, you're out". He said it was inevitable so something definitely planned in advance and I don't know why, but I just don't think it was anything like surgery. I'm absolutely certain that them thinking they wouldn't sit next week was to do with that juror, though. It's got to be. There's no reason for them to think they wouldn't be sitting next week unless they thought one of them had a legitimate reason to be given the time off and assumed they would get a break because of it.

Saw the number of pages and thought a verdict was in!

Bit frustrating the decision we now be 1 juror down when if they'd done it yesterday, it could have been a full house or even if they'd done a majority yesterday would allow for a G even with 2 NG.

It's obvious they can't reach a unanimous vote yet, or haven't gotten through all the charges. If they were considering all of next week as a court week, means they are expecting at least another few days of deliberation. Either being 1 juror down and having to come in next week will speed up the decision or it carries on well into next week as well.

Of course, if the juror discharged was one of the NG ones then good riddance. If they were a G one, then it sucks.

The prosecution will ask judge for new trial, so new jury and start again. It’s not a not guilty verdict so I presume if new trial granted she will still be held on remand

The families must feel like their 'bad luck' (to put it mildly) will never end. To have a baby born too soon or poorly, to then have that baby (against the odds) die, to then find out that precious tiny baby has possibly been murdered and could have survived, then for it to take years to bring the person suspected of murder to court, then for the trial to take an unimaginably long time (with loads of starts, stops, breaks), to finally get to deliberations and be landed with a jury with problems, delays, no-shows, longest time ever to deliberate and now who all want to duck about at their 'appointments' next week instead of taking their responsibility to your little baby's life seriously. I'm so gutted for them.

Honestly I think it’s more likely they’d have paid for the wedding or honeymoon to be changed than that. CPS have offered to pay for flight changes, taxis for hundreds of mile trips, video link equipment etc for my parent.
Again, a wedding would likely to have been arranged well in advance and anyone deciding to plan their own wedding for less than a week after JG told them they should be done (dependant on how long they take) would have to be crazy!

It makes me wonder how much time they are chatting tit about other things rather than the trial. They've obviously all decided amongst themselves at some point that they'd be getting next week off. YOU HAVE ONE bleeping JOB!

If it was a man who got sent home, feasibly his partner could have had a baby? Or someone could have a parent or other relative dying? The language of 'appointments' and 'frustration' isn't helpful, along with all the hold-ups and breaks, but we just don't know what's going on at all with their individual health and situations.
