Every update on Chester Standard impresses me more. Couldn't have asked for a better judge. I wonder if he is familiar with some of the expert witnesses from previous cases he has worked on (as both a judge and a barrister).
At the very least he is highlighting the fact that they are more than credible witnesses and BM was so disrespectful last week...it's all well and good " arguing" with or challenging their evidence, but back it up with clincial evidence/expert witnesses, FFS😡😡

What I find so compelling with Baby A (apart from the strong evidence from expert witnesses and everyone seeing a rash) is the disparity about who gave the dextrose bag and how there’s no evidence that Lucy did look into whether the bag was contaminated. Surely if she was innocent she would have looked into this? I’d be beside myself if I thought a baby on my watch had died that way and want answers!

Especially if she was as “meticulous” and exceptional as is being claimed.

The judge says Mr Myers "repeatedly expressed his opinions" on the merits of the expert evidence, questioning and challenging them.

He says that is his right, but it is up to the jury to determine the reliability of the expert evidence.
Oh God love this Judge!! 🤣🤣

Judge Goss is a tattler 🤣🤣

The judge refers to Dr Dewi Evans, and his role in providing background evidence for Child A.

He said: "On the whole, babies don't suddenly collapse".

He said Child A was the fifth case he looked at, and the cause of the collapse was "unusual".
He said as he looked at further cases, he noticed a "pattern", as he received more evidence.

He said Dr Evans' evidence came for criticism by the defence.

He had not been in practice since 2009, and the defence said he had "constructed theories" and "acted as an investigator" and was "biased", " putting himself forward...at the outset".

The judge says the prosecution point to a large number of incidents for review with "no apparent reasons for an event or death".

They point to Dr Evans' long experience in neonatalogy, and provided "clear evidence" in Child F and Child L that identified two babies on the unit were being poisoned.

The prosecution say Dr Evans was not handed other potentially incriminating evidence, such as shift patterns for staff.

Dr Evans said Child A was "stable" and "as well as could be expected" before the collapse.

Repeated attempts to insert a UVC or long line may have caused upset to Child A, but would not have caused the collapse, he said.

The lack of fluids "would not make a material difference".

'Bright pink' skin discolouration would be unusual in a baby's collapse - but skin discolouration is "not diagnostic" of an air embolus alone, Dr Evans said.

He denied he had been "influenced" in reaching his conclusion by a 1989 medical paper.

He said in Child A's case, there had been colour change, sudden and unexpected collapse, air in various parts of the body, and no explanation for death.

He said it was probably an air embolus intravenously.

I'm finding today's updates much better reading than BM's nonsense last week. Tbf I skimmed most of them as they weren't doing my bp much good at all.

I saw this on reddit earlier...kind of explains that the op hummingbird job adverts may not be for them to look at additional charges but rather to close down actions arising from this case.

Doesn't mean it's true but I thought it was an interesting point to consider.

He said he could see, from his study, "empty structures" of large or air in Child A - after testing, he ruled out the former.
wow I don’t think we heard this at the time (there was very little reporting when he gave evidence). It’s things like this that show just how much more the jury will have heard compared to any single one of us general public.

The judge refers to Dr Sandie Bohin, and her evidence for Child A.

He says the defence accused her of lacking independence, and "enthusiastically supported" Dr Evans' evidence.

She repeatedly denied this assertions, and said her views were her own.

The judge says it is up to the jury to assess the validity of the defence's assertions.

Dr Bohin said neither the UVC or long line contributed to Child A's collapse.

She said Child A was "so well", that there was consideration to giving him feeds, and babies doing well do not develop pink fluctuating rashes that come and go.

She said, excluding other possibilities, air embolus was the "only plausible explanation", and believed air getting in accidentally "was extremely unlikely".

Studies on air emboli should be "treated with caution" as they are on adults or animals, she said.

In cross-examination, she said she did not know of any genetic condition that would cause a collapse and death within 24 hours of birth.

This summing up is what I thought it'd be like. It wraps it all up and makes last week seem a bit random.

Both might be true. This might need to happen but other things may also be uncovered either already or during this process. I’m too sceptical about the June to June dates (one year period, although technically 13 months). It’s too ‘clean’!

I’m soooo glad the judge is going through each baby/charge & explaining the evidence for both sides. Here I think it will be extremely difficult for people not to see how overwhelming the medical evidence actually is! Fingers crossed for the right GUILTY decision to be made

I had a bit of a wobble re her guilt last week. The judge has only been summing up half a day and I already feel really bloody stupid for it 🤦🏼‍♀️

I agree with you. I think both can be true/possible and I believe it’s likely a combination of both. The specific timeline has always interested me and considering she had 250+ handover notes, if they related to 250 different babies, then they all need investigating. If those babies have passed then medical records would need to be obtained with parental consent. It’s huge. Whether it results in more charges is unknown but the fact every single baby she’s been in contact with would need to be looked into

edit to add - there is SO much that goes into an investigation that you don’t realise happens behind the scene. Each of those actions will need repeating for EVERY baby…it’s massive and I Dont doubt they need longer/more hands

I do have some sympathy for BM.

I was reading the Eric charity website the other day as my son is struggling with constipation and whenever I read ‘bowel movement’ I thought of Ben.

Not entirely sure this is how he would like to be remembered 🤣

Judge Goss seems to be perfectly undoing all the crap spouted by BM last week. I’m so relieved.. I can only imagine the parents are too after having to listen to it all.
