You lost me when you said Kneecap are the agitators.I have let this topic simmer on the back burner of my mind this week. Yes, they have every right to call out Israel and they shouldn't be blacklisted/cancelled for it. Their comment "kill your local MP" is ignorant to put it mildly, considering 2 British MPs have been murdered. You expect it from a 14-year-old male edgelord on the Internet to spew that kind of crap, but these dudes are in their 20s and 30s, grow the duck up. They have apparently apologized to the Cox and Arness familes; well the Cox family said it was a half apology. Kneecap said “We also reject any suggestion that we would seek to incite violence against any MP or individual. Ever." Why say it in the first place? If you want to portay yourselves as allies in any cause, you need to be mindful of what you say.
Rap as a genre lost me in the early 90s. I haven't seen the film or know much else about Kneecap, other than they are the agitators of the moment. I don't get where they are coming from. The eldest was what, 8 years old when the Irish Peace Accords were signed? They come across as IRA cosplayers wishing it was still the 1970s. Maybe they can do their own interpretation of The Poni-Tails "Born Too Late-2B a Provo." Going to suck on my Werther's and listen to Kool Moe Dee.![]()
Sorry but what are they meant to do on October the 7th? Is it a new (inter)national holiday or something? Are we all to take the day off from now on?I feel sick every time their names come up…even sicker that they are playing a gig on October 7th.
Maybe basic human decency? Lame af comment. You crack on with fangirling those IRA cosplaying bleeps.Sorry but what are they meant to do on October the 7th? Is it a new (inter)national holiday or something? Are we all to take the day off from now on?
With all due respect go touch some grassMaybe basic human decency? Lame af comment. You crack on with fangirling those IRA cosplaying bleeps.
Life and events go on during all anniversary atrocities. Your post was hyperbole to the point of camp which is why it's been roundly ignored.Maybe basic human decency? Lame af comment. You crack on with fangirling those IRA cosplaying bleeps.
Wise upMaybe basic human decency? Lame af comment. You crack on with fangirling those IRA cosplaying bleeps.
You mention protest songs back in the 60’s and 70’s. Things were more subtle and nuanced then. These days with so many channels serving millions of people, nuance has gone out of the window. The poetry has gone. Now it’s more about using a sledgehammer to break a walnut.Very few public figures talking about it? Are you sure?
on my social media it’s a bombardment of death statistics, images of death and reports of bombings. I don’t think they’re the only ones talking about it - I actually think between rolling, 24hr News and constant sharing of information and misinformation on social media, people are becoming desensitised to it. When I say it, I mean atrocities in general; Israel/Palestine conflict, Russia/Ukraine war included.
People are reducing this to soundbites and digestible instagram length clips which are one sided (regardless of which side that is). Sure, Kneecap and others are talking about current events and politics, but musicians for decades and centuries before them have done the same. Look to Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, blues music, Joan Baez, The Byrds as examples.
For example, the Vietnam war and the killings there were the inspiration and subject of so many songs, albums, books and films.
None of them needed to use hyperbole in the way of a terrorist flag to make their point and none of them had access to social media platforms and still got their points across articulately.
Kneecap are cashing in on a current trend IMO. I’m not saying they don’t have a conscience; they probably have no more or less of a moral conscience or compass than you or I. They’re making a hella lot of money from spouting their views and waving terrorist flags then when they’re called to account for it, they deflect back to death counts in Gaza rather than apologising for saying MPs should be murdered.
