When she says it’s Val’s first birthday without “grandad” I feel like she’s trying to imply that he was Val’s dad. Why would Val be that arsed that Kate’s 90 year old bowls club friend/lover isn’t here anymore for her birthday, when her own best friend died a few months ago?
