Regarding approaching journalists about her, I can completely see why they would be reluctant, but at the same time isn’t this story gold? Admittedly I avoid the news these days but I feel like it’s the sort of thing that readers would love. Sure it’s risky but if the facts are stuck to, backed up with evidence (as any good journalist would do), I don’t see the problem especially as a lot of the evidence is straight from Jack’s own mouth - could hardly ask for a better source really

I do feel like it could be covered in a way that doesn’t come across as right-wing / anti- Jack’s various identities if the harm she is doing to those people is highlighted

Rachel Dolezal has been mentioned here before in relation to Jack’s cosplay. She was more involved in activism and education about blackness (she was a NAACP president and taught African studies at a university) than Jack is with poverty, yet she still got exposed. I’m sure the journalist(s) who exposed her had to weigh things up, and were nervous about the backlash in case there had been a mistake and they asked a genuine African-American woman if she was black...

I don’t know; I just think it’s a scoop 😂 Maybe I’m naïve (can’t write that without thinking ‘anchoïade’) but I think it’d go down well in the climate of cancel culture
Good point about Dolezal. The notable difference there is, she was fairly easy to investigate in terms of not being black, because after some half-hearted digging into her genealogy by any journalist worth their salt, it would be quite simple to find proof that she was not black, and had been identifying as black, when she was in fact white and of German, Czech and Swedish heritage.

With Jack, her many, many ailments, physical and mental, would be hard to disprove. Her tales of poverty perhaps less so, but still some thing a journalist might not be so inclined to sift through.

I agree that it would be a massive scoop and she deserves to be shown up. We just all wish that her poverty-stricken identity she chooses to pass off in order to hold onto to a careered identity of selling books and appearing on telly inevitably DIDN’T lead to kind-hearted people wanting to give her money.

It is a scoop especially if pinned to specifics like the £20 donation. It would have been properly done in an earlier era of holding public figures to account across the board - and investigative journalism being better funded. But news media being so polarised AND impoverished just means there's a danger of a shallow expose that plays to her dramas & wins her more sympathy. The Daily Mail/Spectator/Times covering it- attack on a leftie! Julie Burchill going in like she did on Eric Joyce - attack on a gendery person! Etc. Best would be if it was someone with a more solid history than her of REAL anti-poverty activism and/or food knowledge...

#Jack Monroe #92 the one where she discovers work is time consuming

I realise it's hard to compete with the acceptance of someone's benefit money as something to pick up on, but just had to say it because over and above everything else, who doesn't expect to do something in return for being paid. Faffing about with pictures of your breakfast, lunch and tea isn't 'work' Cooking the food that you and your family are going to eat doesn't count as work. Constantly Tweeting isn't work. These are all things that people do in addition not instead of, well unless you're That Man during lockdown and you're actually showing other people ideas they'll want to try out and you're showing the proof that people eat and enjoy the food and you're doing it via the medium of a professional and TV ready film.

Accepting money for the promise of providing things in return is work, but apparently it's not worth focussing on and is too time consuming to bother with.

How can followers not see that none of that adds up?

Database, mailmerge, print. Job done.
She makes such a meal out of things sometimes. I sometimes see her doing things and think that she's creating unnecessary work for herself and no wonder she doesn't fulfill her obligations or promises. As @Veronicaaa says, she doesn't have any systems.

I'm on ANOTHER grunka because I am BUSY and have fallen behind but I needed to come back to present day briefly just to commend @Peachy9 on the below usage of "Monroeing Myrtle" back in thread #84 which made me HOOT.
Now duck off x

"I'm from essex.. And I'm sorry but I'd rather towie be the legacy we die with, rather than Monroening myrtle giving her two bit.
And I bloody hate towie.

33 meals went in her freezer last week. Minus a few she's used. Now she's making more 🤷🏼‍♀️ WHY?! 😫
I can't work out the financial gain in spending on buying foil containers and running three freezers to store endless quantities of whoopsie chicken wing meat and 75p cooking bacon dishes

You know what really pisses me off about her Patreon nonsense? The fact that it would be so easy to do it legitimately, by posting an Exclusive Slop Recipe once a week. Or make recipe videos. Or make an ebook. Her demented followers would lap it up, and we'd have no cause for complaint except everything else she does. There is no need to commit to physical mailouts she is never going to send.
(Yes) Absolutely! She could host a live chat or even zoom call with the highest tier subscribers, she could respond to personal recipe requests, she should email out exclusive recipes, perhaps in video form, to all tiers. This would also have the added benefit of the main upfront cost being her time and labour. The highest tier could also pay for someone who can't afford Patreon to receive an exclusive recipe from Jack. The blue tickers would love it.

She should radically simplify the patreon to three tiers (maybe at £4/£10/£20, nothing she produces can justify £44 a month) and totally get rid of any element of physical items that need to be posted out if admin is so hard for her. In general, I think postcards are a stupid idea for a subscription service. Even if they're amazing, how many postcards does one person need.

@LavaFlake if we are getting the immersive, authentic Mackie experience, can we see your nails ?
They are in need of a clip and paint (usually they are various shades of red) but freshly brushed this morning and after chopping ingredients, as I always do.

WHY is she doing more batch cooking?? How difficult is it to make your normal lunch / breakfast / dinner, take a photo, and post it??
Batch "cooking" = it's all been processed/photographed by now. She's not eating from the shop, but doesn't want those pics on her timeline.

Is my guess, m'lud 🧐

I'm just here for the soup :D

I just looked this up, and got mad that they seem to start at £79 for a pair of bleeping s l i p p e r s.

How can you claim poverty, and that you can only afford to feed your son bollock and eyelid sausages, but then gunk away more than triple your weekly shop on something you can buy for about £5 in Primark, or maybe £10-£12 in Marks and Spencers.

Jack will simply stroll down to the magic puddle and the the pricey slippers will emerge from the mud like a Burberry scarf.

This is more of a pet annoyance than an actual issue, but it annoys the tit out of me when people continuously capitalise words like this. Writing sentences with Random Capital Letters to make a point is the worst, cos at least when you do an all caps word for emphasis every now and then it works, or you've his caps lock by accident (her all caps words in this post are excessive and so continue to irritate). This "Random Words Here And There" is very Trump-like.

Pie Jesu on a bike! There is no way I’ll catch up in time before work, so forgive me if I’m covering old ground, but like everyone else I’m so angry with her.
Re. the benefits, I’m sure someone asked her about that on Twitter a few months (or weeks?) back and she basically said that her previous experience of the benefits system was too harrowing (or words to that effect) for her to go back to.
Re. the bus fare being too expensive for her, if she genuinely has any of the ailments she claims to have, she would likely be eligible for a bus pass. I have one, eligible because 🔺I actually do have ADHD 🔺 diagnosed by an NHS psychiatrist. It might be different where she lives though, but still. This is one of the many reasons she pisses me off. She never helps people in a similar position to her with practical advice, or help that they are genuinely entitled to.
There’s so much more I could say but I’m BUSY(!), but you lot are all wonderful, and I’m sending ❤ to anyone whose been triggered by her. Now duck off! x
