He‘s definitely read 😂 Love it when they dance as we command on here.

Fair play to him but his posts, photos and actions say otherwise, especially about wanting to be an influencer and prioritising social media. Time will tell I guess

If he is accepting money for adverts and directing his viewers to things they can purchase because he is promoting it- then he is an influencer.

Oh he's 1000% read - where else do you get anonymous comments from 🤣

I mean good for him! I am genuinely glad he's not as Oxford obsessed as we thought he was, but at the same time, he's definitely an influencer and for as long as he continues to post online and take sponsorships, he'll be one.

It seems odd to me to describe a degree as a ‘service’ you are paying for. I don’t want to get into semantics, but I am concerned about the emphasis on students as consumers - rather than being equipped with the tools for independent learning - and the marketisation of education in recent years, perhaps inevitably with higher tuition fees.

I think that if you put your life online and make a living from it, it’s inevitable that people will ask questions and to suggest otherwise is quite pretentious. I don’t understand why he says he had taken steps away from social media when this is clearly not the case: without it, nobody would know him.

It’s probably not for me to question someone’s intentions, but it seems to me that a lot of influencers make a platform for themselves by sharing their life online and then moan something chronic when people ask questions or hold them to account.

(Rant over!)

I feel like studytubers are caught between a rock and a hard place re: how much of their life to share and how much of it to make their brand. They are just another "flavour" of influencer, but because most of them started young, in school, it was a lot less about the lifestyle aspect and more of the studying/school content. But, as they and their viewers inevitably leave education there is a gaping hole where a lot of the content would have stemmed for, hence the turn to more lifestyle-ish/bookish content.

So I get why Jack might feel conflicted about his role online when he is no longer a studytuber. The alternative is to become yet another lifestyle influencer (an extremely surreal/dystopian job imo) and I don't think he's really going for that. He's used to having an online presence and a decent following, but he probably doesn't think of himself as an "influencer". Anyway, I'm glad he's finally landed a job he enjoys and maybe his content will become more career-centered like Eve Cornwell's down the line.

The minute the funding changed for degrees (fees didn't go up, the government just stopped paying the majority of them) higher education became transactional and there was an immediate shift in students expecting to get a good level degree and having certain demands (some reasonable, some not) just because they were paying for it, not because they had worked for it.

By the way notice he didn't say that he didn't apply for a masters this year. So I guess he's been rejected again...

I’ve applied for a masters at Oxford so I’ve been keeping up with TSR postgrad discussion. Oxford did release all of the English results in the past week or so...

Fair enough if he does want to focus on his career - it seems like a wise choice, especially as it is so hard for graduates to get anything at the moment. He also does mention that he shares “all of his failures” in that thread so maybe he didn’t apply. Seems like odd timing though...

Don't know if you've gotten a decision yet, but good luck! I remember stalking the Cambridge TSR forums and refreshing the portal every 5 seconds 😅

He could well have done. Even then I think it's somewhat healthy for him to maybe take a step back from the masters applications and focus on something else for a year rather than spending another year on applications.

The only bit I didn't like was his comments on the screenshot of the comment he posted. They were just asking a question. I know we aren't entitled to any details of his life he doesn't want to share, but when you put parts of your life online and there's gaps people will ask questions about the gaps to make sense. Whether he wants to answer them is down to him but he shouldn't get frustrated by people asking imo

And now he’s back in London?
I get he lives alone but now he’s had enough of his parents and wants his own space he just goes 😂 why can’t people just stay put? Talk about unnecessary.

Thanks! I think I’ll find out in the next week so I’ll be glad to see the back of TSR

Oh in that screenshot he does mention he wasn’t rejected again. I hate it when influencers put their fans on blast like that.

Imagining wanting to be locked in a flat alone in London during lockdown though??? I get sometimes you need your own space but bloody hell, I'd want people around me.

I reckon he'll keep his family as his support bubble and travel down from London to home whenever he wants like he did last time which is just ugh... especially since he has to take the train.

As someone who has a partner that works away during the week, I’d never want to be by myself ever again during the pandemic and I’m screwed because I can’t have a bubble because I’m not a single person, reckon he’ll travel back to his family home when he gets sick of London. I think he thinks he’s better than his family, still confused why he didn’t make a video of moving back in with his family and redecorating his “childhood bedroom” like put a double bed in there, talk about what it’s like, but again too relatable for our above the rest of us jack Edwards

Tbf I live alone and I can't imagine living with someone during a pandemic. Yes there's the odd moment of loneliness but generally I'm glad I don't have someone constantly there 24/7 🤣🤣 ive rarely been bored.

I could have moved in with my mum but we didn't think that would do either of us any good.

That's understandable but in lockdown 2 Jack showed himself travelling from London to home almost every Sunday to see his family. They're his support bubble, so it's not illegal. But there is guidance how far you should travel atm and London to Sussex would definitely be over that. I just hope he doesn't do that this time because it's so much worse out there atm and if he wants to see his parents he could have just stayed at home there was no need to move to London rn

Yes I agree. I don't live that far from my mum and we are a bubble (10 min drive at most). I wouldn't travel that far regularly.

I've worked it out!

You know how Jack said he wasn't doing a masters (not that he didn't apply) and that he hadn't been rejected by Oxford and it just sounded like weird wording???

Astrid's tweet helped me realise what probably happened,
Screenshot_20210223-133413.png

I'm 99% sure he did apply but was waitlisted.

I know its speculation but he unlisted his vids at the time the offers / waitlist / rejections came out and he was careful not to say that he didn't apply so I am so sure this is what happened.

I don't think he'd make a definitive statement that he's not doing his masters next year if he was waitlisted, I really believe he just isn't doing one.
