I do feel its possibly slightly generational too, a lot of his generation and below seem obsessed with labels (either sexuality, background, race etc). Whereas for me (in my 30s) growing up we did everything we could to shake off being labelled and not be defined by certain things and it's so depressing to seemingly heading back to everyone having to label themselves.

Also the victim role and having a 'journey' is very popular these days especially on social media, it feeds narcissism and encourages sympathy and comments and attention. The downside to mental health awareness is now everyone things they have it and it excuses any questionable behaviour and they are beyond criticism and people should 'be nice'
I think it is a Gen Z thing that's trickled over from America's obsession with having some kind of a background/label/culture to identify yourself with. I'm definitely concerned about Gen Z's need to feel like they're the most oppressed, because let me tell you it's not actually all that fun.

So many of his jokes are "stolen" from social media. One time he replied to a tweet about Covid coming to Durham after being rejected by Oxford and a week later he made that exact same joke in a video. He must be painfully unfunny when he can't get prompts from other people.

Cant believe he'd say publicly that he doesn't pay attention to zoom calls at work and that hes looking at their house in the background 😭 I know it's (probably?!) a joke but come on Jack! If you love the job don't lose it! 😭
This pissed me off quite a bit. I work in publishing as in for Pan Macmillan and yes I’m not in my initially “dream department” but I do love my job and I’m learning so much, it’s my first full time grad role and it took me eight months of well over 100 rejections to get and I know because it’s fixed term maternity cover I’ll be job hunting again in September. I know the fact he’s called it “my publishing job” I know if for the algorithm/sheer amount of people who will be drawn to that and yeah I get it he works on social media that’s smart, and I’m not saying his job isn’t in publishing my main way of getting experience in uni was to be an editorial assistant for an academic journal, but for the hundreds of grads looking for advice on getting into publishing to find his video but to also hear he’s kinda slacking on that opportunity just annoys me.

Also not saying I’m perfect and don’t have lapses in concentration, we all do especially during working from home but I just think it’s a bit different on a video to his kind of audience especially when he’s clearly thought it through enough to target a large audience of grads trying to get into one of the most competitive creative industries

I'm so glad someone said this. Jack even said himself that he didn't need a job financially, he just didn't want to do YouTube full-time (which is respectable, but come on, don't moan about being unemployed in the middle of the biggest job crisis any of us have ever seen when you're loaded enough to rent a flat in CENTRAL LONDON).
To him, getting a job is just for something to do, not because he desperately needs money.

When I rented a flat (and not a student flat), I had to jump through hoops to prove I could afford it, so I would be interested in how he proved that (unless of course his parents are paying for him).

What i don't get is why do so many students swallow everything these influencers say and do and don't question it? A standard part of going to uni is learning about and applying critical thinking. They have also grown up with the Internet so should be even more aware of not trusting everything you see online

He's moaning about London going into stricter measures so he's not able to go to the pub for his birthday. Look around you Jack, everyone is suffering, you are not a special case ffs.

Fuck me! He wants to spend some time in some temporary classrooms that are in school for over 20 years in the middle of winter!
Literally 😂 my secondary school had ASBESTOS in the cupboards and walls and we had music classes in a portacabin for three years. He’s right to bring up the disparity because it’s there but god accept your privilege, those photos look like a dream school haha (previous poster)

I've noticed here and in Carrie Hope Fletchers thread people saying they used to watch but had stopped in recent months/years. I wonder if it's a case of the viewers growing up but the youtubers not

Wouldn't be surprised if he only said he got it from the supermarket so he could make his 'Went to the supermarket and all I brought back was covid' joke

I think Jack’s arrogance refuses to let him see that he isn’t actually anything special in terms of all the other grads looking for work. He comes across as being so entitled.

He talked about online hate in his new video, mate, if you publish something just accept not everyone is going to like it, your planners were a flop, your book is pamphlet that can be found elsewhere, calm down

oh yeah probably, all his videos are very click baity titles and he is clearly an attention seeker anyway. Still so cringe though and it just doesnt make him look good. He should be transitioning now into something more mature reflecting the next stage of his life and something that will appeal to his contemporaries going through the same thing. I honestly think in a couple of years he will be lost, his current audience will have moved on, he will be irrelevant to generations coming through and he will not appeal to employers and will have missed his window for graduate jobs. Youtube as a platform will likely have evolved too.
This. He comes across like a little teenager - it’s really not endearing. Have some empathy Jack, with the adult world around you where people are on less pay that usual because of furlough or reduction of hours, where people are doing their bit not to be superspreaders whereas you aren’t. He just comes across as a petulant smug boy tbh.

Completely agree @Kcn, if they're willing to put that video on their insta stories they're surely breaking other rules and simply not broadcasting it.

The more breaking the rules is normalised by everyone - and especially people with thousands of followers - the more fucked we all are a few weeks/months down the line.

I’ve been watching Jack’s videos for a while now, almost from when he started at Durham. For a long time, he was the one StudyTuber I could stand watching - he came across as down-to-Earth and relatable, and wasn’t obsessed with doing ridiculously long study sessions (e.g. creating endless lists). However, as he’s gone through uni, I’ve found he has become increasingly arrogant. For example, leaving things to the last minute, whilst telling everyone else they need to be organised, doesn’t endear me to him. I get the impression that he thinks it’s ‘cool’.

His recent video explaining his end-of-year grades especially wound me up. Blaming Coronavirus for his drop in exam grades didn’t sound good and I feel like he can always find someone or something to blame when he wants to. He sounds increasingly privileged and disconnected from real-life. The publication of his book certainly hasn’t helped and, if his dedication is true, it’s quite frankly pathetic.

It’s a shame because I really liked him. If his content can come more relatable (gaining some real-life work experience instead of living in a central London flat rent free) then maybe he will become that bit more humble again. Unfortunately, I don’t really see that happening anytime soon.

I’m still confused as to why he didn’t move back home? Like surely regardless of the money he was raking in, he’s not magically got a graduate job in London, his could save soo much money at home and would have access to WiFi? I’m really not sure why he seems so dead set on staying in London (it’s not like his family is that far either!)

His vlogs after graduation have been so vacuous. I feel like he should've stuck with that screenwriting course, given how he has no job nor grad school plans. He could also spend some time volunteering if he can't get a job. Right now yt is still profitable for him, so he has the financial cushion to work without getting paid. Either of those two options would make for more interesting vlogs than what we're getting now.
I don’t see why he isn’t either volunteering or applying for unpaid internships? He’s got 0 experience in a very competitive market, maybe he should think about using his financial security to make sure he can get a job?? wasting money on an undoubtedly overpriced London flat doesn’t seem very smart either but I suppose staying at home would stop the ✨ Revolutionary✨ thrifting videos

I think it is. Youtubers continuously do the thing that originally got them the following, and instead of growing and developing their content naturally with their audience they keep churning out the old content like beating a dead horse.
