He can get lost 😂

If you’re unemployed you generally can’t afford to just rent a place in LONDON ffs Jack is lucky he has YouTube to keep him afloat.

This is the worst financial crisis since 2009 so he needs to get some perspective. Yes it’s tough to be a graduate now but it’s tough for people in their late 20s/30s and beyond who may have been furloughed and now unemployed etc. Literally no one is living it up right now, we all have been effected in some way.

I said it before but he should do that screenplay course, it’s better than nothing. Also i don’t see what he’s expecting to add to his Oxford application to get himself in...

So this may be very ignorant or judgemental but what is his actual long-term plan with his degree/career?
The only thing I've heard him say about his future career is that he wants to do a PhD. That's it. No mention of career sectors he could go into nor roles he'd like.
he cant surely be surprised at job rejections? is he that deluded and out of touch that he doesnt know what's going on around the UK at the moment. Many extremely skilled and educated people are struggling in the job market at the moment. And with him I dont really know what he would be at the front of the queue for job wise. Degree is a but vague and he has no practical work experience (e.g. placement year)
He has very few transferable skills, and a lot of competition now that hundreds of people are applying for roles that they are over-qualified and over-experienced for due to the pandemic. English Literature isn't exactly a practical course which you can apply to any job role.

This is what I've been wondering too - he didn't have much of a plan for this year as it was, so he's not exactly developing himself. The only thing that will change at this rate is his degree classification (no longer pending/predicted), and his personal statement.

Jack is moaning on IG about job rejections. It's unsurprising (regarding both his moaning and rejections).

Also he said that he has a flat to move into in London - I don't understand 1) how he can afford one, 2) how he would pass the credit checks, and 3) why he would bother to waste the money when he's not doing anything there.
I'm so glad someone said this. Jack even said himself that he didn't need a job financially, he just didn't want to do YouTube full-time (which is respectable, but come on, don't moan about being unemployed in the middle of the biggest job crisis any of us have ever seen when you're loaded enough to rent a flat in CENTRAL LONDON).

To him, getting a job is just for something to do, not because he desperately needs money.

When I rented a flat (and not a student flat), I had to jump through hoops to prove I could afford it, so I would be interested in how he proved that (unless of course his parents are paying for him).

And that will show, recruiters and employers can tell someone who is just after anything or not bothered. And it will likely show in applications.

But if he doesn't want to do YouTube forever now is the time to get a graduate placement if he can or some sort of entry job. If he doesnt he will miss his window. Late 20s with an aging degree and no experience is not going to be appealing to many employers.

I think Jack is in that situation that a lot of fresh graduates find themselves in where they apply to a handful of aspirational jobs fresh out of uni and are *pikachu shocked face* when they get rejected. It sucks, but I think it's an important stage to go through because it makes you realise that it isn't enough to just apply to a few jobs that you like the sound of; you have to humble yourself and apply to things you think you're overqualified for and apply for positions that you don't think would be a perfect fit.

I think the concern with Jack is that because he has this safety net of YouTube and being able to live in London alone, he will just coast along doing bits and bobs until he can start a masters next year and the university content can start back up again.

On a separate note, Jack flexing the fact he went to a state school, yet again 🙄

At least in my uni experience (not Durham though!) people shut up about this after freshers week, can't believe he still makes such a huge deal out of it. It's probably because it's the only "disadvantage" he's faced in his solidly middle class life.

tbh I dont think the state school thing is that big a deal these days anyway. Coming from deprived areas are the issue, the state school stigma alone went out the window 20 years ago really. Tony Blair changed that by getting more people to uni.

And also you dont need tiktok to see in private schools....social media has been around for years. plus documentaries on TV. everyone has seen the kind of things that go on. How sheltered or ignorant is he?!

Lastly what awful customer service. while technically he isnt wrong, he isnt doing his pr any good. And he isnt addressing the second persons issue at all.

That’s just rubbish advice as well, most decent companies handle it if something gets lost in the post, no?

RE the above - you just reminded me of a documentary series from years ago about Harrow school. Seeing how the other half lived was mind blowing at the time

Him acting as though the class divide in the UK is synonymous with the state/private school distinction is such a crude way of looking at things. There is an abundance of excellent state schools especially in the south of England and wealthy families will move into the catchment areas of these schools to ensure their kids end up going there. Meanwhile some parents will make significant financial sacrifices to send their kids to private school. It isn't always cut and dry.

And lol, what do you know... Jack's sixth form college (available publicly on his LinkedIn) is ranked third in the country in terms of A-Level performance. He would've received an outstanding education from there, far better than your average private school. So idk why he is acting so shocked by private schools when he received a top-class education himself. I'm also not sure what he means when he says he didn't know what a private school looks like, because most of them look exactly the same as his sixth form which looks waaay fancier than the average state sixth form.

His company chose to use Hermes as the courier, so yes Jack, you do have involvement with them. Your side needs to ensuring that the products reach your customers, not washing your hands of them the moment they leave the printers.

Totally agree about the state school stigma being a thing of the past - I went to a state school, and it was in an area where the average house price is £400k. Just because you went to a state school Jack, does not mean you're from the 'hood' or representing impoverished students in any way. Not with an accent like that... State schools in areas of social deprivation are more the issue now.

I can’t believe they’ve used Hermes, clearly squeezing as much money out of his minions as possible

Hermes, Unite... Jack doesn't seem to care about a company's reputation as long as he's benefiting.

Thank you so much for this! I'm really fortunate to have attended a private school (though an average one). The state schools in my area aren't very good so my parents made an enormous sacrifice for my education (I am so, so grateful to them!). I was also really lucky to get a scholarship/ additional financial assistance in my sixth form years.
It annoys me when some studytubers, who went to even better schools than me for free, present themselves as disadvantaged.

Also I can confirm that Jack's sixth form college actually looks even fancier than my private school, so I have no idea what he's on about. In fact, if I didn't know any better, I'd have thought it was a private school! On the website of his college there's a virtual tour, so here's some images from that.

Literally 😂 my secondary school had ASBESTOS in the cupboards and walls and we had music classes in a portacabin for three years. He’s right to bring up the disparity because it’s there but god accept your privilege, those photos look like a dream school haha (previous poster)

Oh my God, this is insane! As Jack would put it: "like my whole time at state school I had no clue what a good state school even looked like so seeing Jack's school is blowing my little mind"

I was at a private school (and was lucky for that) but even we had classes in a portacabin. Drama & Geography were in portacabins. Got cold there in the winter. The geography one was at the back of the playground down a really narrow set of stairs and was positioned in a ditch between two buildings. Needless to say it ended up flooding and was out of use for years by the time I left.

Not long until Jack is 22, safe to say that he's getting too old for the "studytuber" role at this point. What will he do next?

I’m not from the UK so excuse my ignorance but where I am from (Australia) if you want go get a graduate scheme post uni you start applying in your final year. Is that the same in the UK? Do you think he would be applying for graduate schemes now or just jobs to work in a bookshop? He just seems so lazy and entitled to me to have rested plan A on doing a Masters at Oxford and not bothering to apply for any grad schemes in his final year. I also don’t see how his application would be that competitive. At least for the programs I went for you had to give examples of problem solving, team work, strategic thinking. Not really sure what he could offer an employer to be honest, I’m sure most wouldn’t care about his YouTube and that seems to be his only point of difference. It will be VERY interesting to see what job he gets though at this point he’ll probably just loiter around Camden until he can apply for masters again.
