This. He comes across like a little teenager - it’s really not endearing. Have some empathy Jack, with the adult world around you where people are on less pay that usual because of furlough or reduction of hours, where people are doing their bit not to be superspreaders whereas you aren’t. He just comes across as a petulant smug boy tbh.

It shows what class he’s from, he clearly isn’t worried about money because YouTube means he can swan about doing what he wants, hasn’t had to live back in with his parents like a lot of graduates, not just graduates during a pandemic......

I discovered him just recently, during his booktube era and I enjoy his new book videos. His study videos are cringy but looking back at his old videos and comparing them with the current ones, he seems to be more mature now.
You guys discussed his sexuality very early on in this thread and I didn't see any discussion about him being bisexual, which is probably the case with his sexuality. I don't know what you think but as another bi guy, it seems obvious to me.

I think the discussion of his sexuality is often untoward and aggressive but I feel the same. For me the biggest signal is his dissertation. Obviously straight people can and do read queer theory but completing a whole research project about shame and sexuality is a big rainbow flag for me. I myself felt drawn to queer media in hs and then later realized some things about why that might be haha

I agree, my youtube watching and subscriptions has changed quite a lot over lockdown. It's really exposed the fakes who do anything for content over the authentic ones. Similar on instagram too but not quite so bad

I actually found his most recent video quite interesting. I much prefer when these studytubers use their channels to help educate with a more modern twist than when they try and pivot into lifestyle vloggers with no real focus to their channel.

He could easily do a book before each week or every couple of weeks and it would give him the content he enjoys too

Not to bring up Ibz again but I'm watching his new video and he's really going into depth about why he chose the specific MA at Oxford that he's doing (and mentions that he applied to a Cambridge MA also but chose Oxford over it) and he really looked at the course structures and modules etc and balanced that against what he wanted out of a masters and said that he told them in his interview what he would/does want to do his dissertation on -- again all miles away from Jack! There's no way Jack would be able to do an equivalent video on why he applied to the course he did bc we all know it was for the prestige and out of bitterness, lol

It makes me laugh that he was seriously calling out influencers in Dubai when it was only a few months ago he was swanning around Europe with jade and eve. Yeah he had supposedly not left the house bar a trip to Aldi but it stunk of hypocrisy for him to be so mad about it.

Also, since when has this idea about making a BTS book recommendation video popped into his mind? It’s the first time I’ve ever heard him talk about them and sounds to me like he’s taking a leaf out of Jade’s book and is trying to reel in ARMY for views :/ as an ARMY myself I just see it as him being a fake fan trying to get views lol

To be fair, it fits with his style of video recently. They've all been 'I read every book x celebrity recommended'. He's trying to cash in on all celebrities, not just BTS.

well said and completely true. His entitlement is showing more and more. His passion seems to be for attention and social media likes and views. Besides his degree he has not demonstrated a passion for literature at all, or for higher education.

Absolutely. He’s so boring, I can’t watch any of his videos, there’s no enthusiasm for his degree. (I’ve realised I stopped watcjimf eve & jade for similar reasons - they have no personality and they’re so boring.) Solely corny and irritating ‘puns’

This is spot on, thank you. I always found Eve Cornwell so refreshing in that aspect, because when she was asked whether she would have liked to study at Oxbridge she straight up said no. Or Ruby - when she talked about MA programmes she said she had looked into Cambridge, but it's not at the top of her list. And that's how you're supposed to choose your postgrad course. What reason for wanting to attend Oxford can Jack give in his application besides the fact that it's Oxford?

Which is something Oxford will be incredibly attuned to now. I'm sure their applications department can get a good sense of who genuinely wants to study there and who is chasing the prestige.

Yeah he said he bought them on abebooks, which is a second hand book site owned by amazon, so about £200-300 is probably accurate. Prices for most of the books should be around £5-7, for classics usually £1-3. I really can't fault him for this one, he has the money and they're mostly (all?) second hand. He could have ordered from worldofbooks which as far as I know isn't owned by amazon but that's being nitpicky.

I've ordered through WorldofBooks and definitely recommend them if anyone is looking for a website for second hand books! I've also used Bookshop.org which routes all orders through independent bookshops and again, isn't owned by Amazon!

My only problem with vee is, in a recent video her sister and her walked into Asda without masks, she never said that they were exempt etc and hasn’t addressed it since... she got loads of comments on the video too

Yeah and when she was living in London she posted some insta stories of her partying with 8+ people (looked like it was a house party vibe- anyone see it?), socialising with no social distancing which made me a little frustrated. I love Vee so don’t wanna shit on her because I find her inspiring (much more than Jade/Jack/Eve who seem to just be social media focused) but she needs to follow the covid rules like everyone else...

Still, I’d much rather watch Vee and Ibz because they’re actually doing things other than flexing on SM and have goals to make a difference in the world rather than being a glorified influencer.

Also, a couple of my friends and I received the academic planner (I thought it looked really nice) but mines had pages in the wrong order, pages upside down, my friends had pages missing. We've all reached out about getting a new planner and just getting ignored! Not a good look. Wish I had bought Ruby's instead For how much the planner cost I'm actually a bit gutted.

That sucks I'm sorry! It's really shitty that they're ignoring people.
How did you pay? If PayPal then it's worth reaching out to them and explaining the product is not fit for purpose but the seller are ignoring you, they contact the seller and it tends to push for a quicker resolution!


I'm also really annoyed he travelled, very careless. I see a lot of people complaining on the news when the country they went to gets put on the quarantine list - boo hoo honestly? You should not be going abroad right now unless you absolutely have to.

He is so desperate to classify himself as special in some way, he's reaching very far. You don't need a label, especially ones that are essentially meaningless. He might as well keep saying he's a Libra. Also, being first gen means nothing - even if a sibling or parent went to uni before me, everyone's experience is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. It's not like I truly experienced uni before just because they went.

The fact that he felt that he had to send a tirade of messages (DMs I might add) in response to a tweet shows that he's pretty defensive about things. I wouldn't be surprised if he mentions it in an upcoming video about how mean people are.


I have no doubt that he will be exactly the same.

I do feel its possibly slightly generational too, a lot of his generation and below seem obsessed with labels (either sexuality, background, race etc). Whereas for me (in my 30s) growing up we did everything we could to shake off being labelled and not be defined by certain things and it's so depressing to seemingly heading back to everyone having to label themselves.

Also the victim role and having a 'journey' is very popular these days especially on social media, it feeds narcissism and encourages sympathy and comments and attention. The downside to mental health awareness is now everyone things they have it and it excuses any questionable behaviour and they are beyond criticism and people should 'be nice'

My PhD cohort all did wildly different masters at different unis, we are in a highly competitive funded programme at a Russel group and it didn't seem to matter at all where we did our masters. One guy did Oxford but that was by far the most 'prestigious' - he really needs to stop being so hung up on Oxford and move forward.

As others have said it's really doubtful he would get accepted if he tries again next year.

I know people who went to Oxbridge and HATED the experience and went elsewhere to do their MA and PhD.

like 10 mins into his most recent vid he makes this joke about UK elections being more low budget than US ones in this really animated way, and the WHOLE thing is just totally lifted from this tweet... why doesn't he credit it? he does that ALL the time it's so annoying and cringey. just imagine him reading it and then rehearsing saying it so he can repeat it in his video as though it's natural....

Yes! That's what always bugs me - you can tell which comments/jokes have been lifted from elsewhere by the weird way he delivers them. His intonation is completely different when he's just self-commentating or talking to someone versus when he's saying these *original* quips. I guess he's trying to come across as naturally funny, when in fact the opposite is true.

oh that's pretty decent. if he did well enough to be able to apply to oxford for a masters he must have at least a high 2.1. I do wonder if his YouTube channel went against him with oxford. They may not want high profile vlogging revealing stuff or disrupting other students plus Jack's videos seem to make it look cool to leave all your work until the last minute. That may work for YouTube views but doesnt endear you and look like you take studying seriously

It’s like everything has to be “problematic” even though he has it way easier than most. It’s not cool to leave an essay till just before the deadline then pull it off at the last minute when there is literally no reason to do so. Some students have it hard, they have to work the be able to afford it, they don’t get stuff handed to them or make money from a 10 minute YouTube video once a week. Jack doesn’t realise how hard the real world is and when there are deadlines leaving it till just before makes you look unorganised and that you don’t give a shit. Quite the opposite of the organised life he puts across with his £17 planner
