May be just me being sensitive but saying you “get to actually live in the city centre” implies that living in the city centre is better than being on a campus. I grew up in a city centre and went to a campus university where I lived on campus first year and the surrounding town my other years, and didn’t feel like I missed out even slightly. The campus felt so much more like a community where people knew eachother. I don’t really like his phrasing tbh feels a bit judgemental.

It is definitely weird, but people still give it a go (i.e. Rosie Crawford, still calling herself a "recent graduate of the university of Oxford" at the start of every video even when it's over a year since she graduated)

Sorry Jack, campus university students also "actually live in the city centre". It's only in first year (at most universities) that they live on campus. How much research did you do again?

i agree! For uni students like me it’s so irritating to be paying so much for online classes, but it’s to keep us safe, so we accept it. Not like the influencers that seem to put their social lives and videos above the safety of people

Don't worry, we're all pretty frustrated in having to teach the online classes- it's a completely different way of working and we'd all much rather be doing in-person things, but we have to do it until the virus has gone.

My first thought when I saw his insta story was: "Does he have permission from that bookseller to sign copies?" It did not look official, and seemed pretty dodgy if I'm honest. If he wanted some signed copies to be in circulation, why didn't he do that at the publishers?

@Magallanes The fact that he decided not to do the screenwriting course purely because it was no longer abroad speaks volumes. He is definitely scrabbling around trying to find stuff to do to fill this year. He should really be looking for things more long-term in case he gets rejected from Oxford again - let's face it, what has he done that will increase his chances of acceptance?

He’s not getting into oxford, they don’t think he suits them, that’s all there is too it, no matter what he does to his application etc, they’re looking for good fits to their style/the way they think, clearly he’s no accepted this, but if you’re rejected once, the chances are you’re going to be rejected the more times you apply, he needs to get over oxford, it’s not the be and end all, just go to another university, I’ve found the ex poly uni’s much better for employability and employer links which surely is what you want?

Hi guys, I've been watching Jack on and off for a few years, mostly just to see what he's up to.

Sorry if this is obvious or has been mentioned before, but does anyone know if he has any plans for a master's? Has he a confirmed place anywhere? Is he reapplying for Oxford? Abandoned the whole idea and now job searching (that's the idea I get from his tweets but I rewatched his Oxford masters rejection video last night and he seemed to say he was going to apply again!)?

In his last Q&A video he said that he had applied to Oxford again (as well as other places which he didn't specifically name), but he said in a later more recent video that he still wants to go to the USA to do that screen-writing course, so I don't know if he'll simply wait until COVID has been managed to go straight away, or if he'll go after his masters. Goodness knows if he's had any decisions back yet, or whether he'll ever mention it if he does. He only seems to be talking about 'dream job' interviews at the moment, which he doesn't mention again either (i.e. he wasn't successful).

He needs to define himself somehow - can't be 'the English Lit student at Durham' anymore, so living in London is about as exciting as he can muster right now.

I am already sick of his thrifting videos, what else can he possibly offer in lockdown? Reading challenges I guess.

Edit: I was thinking he should remove all the references to his author and influencer status from his LinkedIn and CV and market his soft skills learned in his degree (analytical skills, problem solving and communication) and willingness to learn to employers. Who wants to work with a kid in an entry level/grad role who just talks about his book and social media successes? Would turn me right off.

I suspect he, like a lot of influencers and content creators, are now desperate for content especially now his university journey has ended. And that I think is the reason he was going abroad to study and wants oxford. Both give a unique niche to make his videos stand out. Without that he is just another vlogger with a normal (albeit privileged) life

Also, and this sounds meaner than I mean it, but his degree is somewhat limiting in the job market. If he is going up against people with business, marketing, accounting etc type degrees they will likely be more appealing to employers in more areas than English Literature. Although he is all about the top universities, they often focus more on the academic whereas the newer universities are focusing on employability and skills employers look for

He is so desperate to classify himself as special in some way, he's reaching very far. You don't need a label, especially ones that are essentially meaningless. He might as well keep saying he's a Libra. Also, being first gen means nothing - even if a sibling or parent went to uni before me, everyone's experience is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. It's not like I truly experienced uni before just because they went.

The fact that he felt that he had to send a tirade of messages (DMs I might add) in response to a tweet shows that he's pretty defensive about things. I wouldn't be surprised if he mentions it in an upcoming video about how mean people are.

What will this guy be like once he hits 30? Only 8 years away...

I have no doubt that he will be exactly the same.

Just bought himself another designer bag!
I feel like we will really see jack true colours in the coming year (much more so than we have done) he’s managed to keep this semi “wholesome” appearance up because he’s a study tuner who wouldn’t go down to London all the time, but with the types of youtube friends he’s made and seems to have become associated too, that shows, more than anything the type of person he is (he’s very pally with the social climbers and Anastasia kingsnorth)

Wasn't first gen but might as well have been - I did my UCAS by myself (when my dad did it, it was still paper applications and the perception of what unis were "good" has shifted a fair bit since then) and I don't think many people are really prepared for what uni is like. Nowadays there's plenty of help and information online, so you don't have to rely on your parents or school being savvy to get an edge.

Making a big deal of nothing to sell his book is fucking disgraceful. What about students who actually struggle with real issues like finances?? Jack is obviously just in it for the money or he would have made a free ebook - it’s all so he can be a published “author” (if you can even call it that) and get the financial benefits

I can't wait for his preachy message to A level students tomorrow, which will somehow include both the fact that he got 3 A*s and a 1st but even THAT can't make you OXBRIDGE material fellow kids

I hope he doesn’t comment, he has no idea how any of them are feeling, he has no idea what the outcomes are/how different they would have been to sitting at the exams, it’s not been easy and politicians are just playing games to get them to resent their teachers when the new announcement about mocks the regulatory body (ofqual) didn’t even know about!

I wonder if Jack really wants to do a masters because of his love of Eng Lit, or whether he just sees it as another attempt at Oxford. He's mentioned during a PhD in the past, but again, whether that's just to continue trying for Oxbridge or not is difficult to tell.

He’s put an explanation on Twitter but it’s not good enough. And now his folllowers are saying “well you shouldn’t have to explain yourself”. Especially after the whole Dominic Cummings saga, jack should be more mindful of being critical and then going on to do the exact same thing. The bottom line is that we were told a student house is a second home and Jack has directly contradicted that by moving back in with people from other households (one bing from abroad) and not social distancing. You can see the middle class attitude of thinking rules don’t apply to him and he can do what he wants. And I think there’s no way he couldn’t have moved out in one day-I did it, and lots of other students did, he’s not special and different to any other student just because he is a YouTuber
