He lived in his own for the second lockdown as his flat mate went back to Scotland (I can’t remember why) and then never seemed to come back, he went back home just before Christmas, and then where he lives got put into tier 4 and he’s not been back to London since
I think it’s been a massive waste of money living in London during a pandemic
The student flat okay they gifted it to him but paying like £1k per month when you could be at home for a lot less, fair enough change your room around if it’s not what you want but seems silly
Ultimate definition of privilege

Thing is there are plenty of camp men who are 100%straight, and there are many women who are attracted to them so it is possible. However I'm not sure Jack is one of those men, or he is asexual

I am already sick of his thrifting videos, what else can he possibly offer in lockdown? Reading challenges I guess.

Edit: I was thinking he should remove all the references to his author and influencer status from his LinkedIn and CV and market his soft skills learned in his degree (analytical skills, problem solving and communication) and willingness to learn to employers. Who wants to work with a kid in an entry level/grad role who just talks about his book and social media successes? Would turn me right off.
You're right, being an author and influencer doesn't actually tell an employer anything they need to know about his transferable skills and knowledge. He needs to do the legwork on his CV to make himself stand out for the right reasons. Otherwise it's just looks lazy. What I wouldn't give to see one of his submitted job applications! 😅

Also, why has he put 'author' under employment? It looks like he's employed to churn out books given the way he's placed/worded it. Pretty sure LinkedIn has a publications section (but that's probably too discreet for him).

Oxford reject you for a reason, it’s not always a try again and you’ll get in, they already know what type of candidates they want!
Not what I'm saying at all! Of course you can't send in the same application and expect to get in, but plenty of people re-apply and get admitted because they improved their application (whether that's through submitting a better proposal, getting more professional experience, better references). Of course re-applying doesn't mean you'll get in second time around, but I'm just trying to say there's no black mark on re-applicant. I'm speaking on it because I'm involved in the process haha.

I think I've managed to work out what annoys me about Jack's videos: he can't say a single sentence without a stupid zoom-in halfway through it as he says a pun/joke in the most unsubtle intonation ever. It's not easy to watch or listen to, and makes me forget what he's actually talking about.
Ugh yes, this. It's become his thing but I don't know if he should be proud. It's irritating.

Actually really like Ricky, ended up watching a few of his videos. Doesn't take himself seriously at all and takes piss out of himself as much as he does Jack. No pretensions

He just speaks in a very "media trained" way (that's the best definition I can give)
That is the perfect description, it just doesn't come across as sincere or authentic to him or any real human being. He is one of those students I think who swallows the theories and best practices etc but is unable to inject any personality or variation in them.

Oh no some of them were like £1 or £2 they’re all second hand! So maybe £200 or so
Yeah he said he bought them on abebooks, which is a second hand book site owned by amazon, so about £200-300 is probably accurate. Prices for most of the books should be around £5-7, for classics usually £1-3. I really can't fault him for this one, he has the money and they're mostly (all?) second hand. He could have ordered from worldofbooks which as far as I know isn't owned by amazon but that's being nitpicky.

I just don't understand how someone with first from a top university can think YouTube is a long term career solution and prioritise that over getting a job or getting on and getting a masters. If he isn't careful he will end up wasting his degree. It will become worthless after a while with no practical experience to back it up and fresh graduates coming up behind him with more current degrees.

Hell even mega youtube stars have had to diversify.
To be fair, I think he is just biding is time until he can do a masters but this year has made it impossible to do so.

I think if he continued down the niche kind of like the Harry Styles video that would fit with diversifying his content whilst keeping it tied to Studytube. I think he wants to be a proper YouTuber though, since he's been hanging out with Anastasia and co whenever he gets the chance.

Flogging the defective planners for charity - nice. /sarcasm

For someone who was avoiding solving the issues with his planner a few months ago, he's making out like he's sooo generous and intelligent for doing this.

I only applied to one MA but I did it years after graduating, so my situation was different but I don’t think it’s unusual for people going back to uni who have jobs and who live in the area to apply to only one or two programs.

Jack however, should’ve applied to Durham if he was happy with his university and department instead of pinning his hopes on Oxford. Not only does he know the department, they can help him with finding funding and getting his PhD application perfect if he went down that route.
And you get 25% off the tuition fees if you’re a Durham graduate and do your postgrad there!

does anyone else think he's almost definitely working for Ali Abdal
I’ve only watched I kid you not two minutes and it’s already matched up to Ali’s “I’ve wasted six months of my life” latest video where he talks about the proposals for his self help/motivation book

does anyone know which youtuber it was who made a video criticising him? i'm honestly curious to see how bad it was
I think it must be Student Vlogs - Dylan, don't know what video it was though. I've only watched one video from him - one where he was baffled as to why he got 58% on an essay because he transcribed the textbook and lecture notes. I don't think he's the sharpest tool in the shed.

And looks like Jack read my comment here lol (does anyone hate it when influencers incessantly read these threads? let me snark in peace plz) but guess he realised it wasn't the best move to leave that clip in. But it shows that name-dropping people in a negative light when you have an audience can only ever have bad consequences - now he has had to scramble to explain further when he could've just not brought it up in the first place. Now it's just awkward all round for everyone.

what he says about ibz mo in your DMs reminds me of this video (min 1:32)

if you don't want to get them views, basically there is a fan assumption that says: "jade and jack are jealous of ibz and eve because they got into oxbridge", and both jade and jack respond they are not jealous because they were not competing for the same place, they study different courses, therefore ibz and eve did not "took" their place from oxbridge...
that is EXACTLY what he says in your DMs, that there is no comparison between his case and ibz's because they pursue different careers

it looks like a very rehearsed answer they've been spilling out for years and years to assure people that they are not jealous of those who got into oxbridge...jack, i think it's time to look for a better answer next time, you're repeating yourself!

His book dedication is:

"This book is dedicated to my A Level Biology teacher, who told me it was time to start aiming lower - I'm glad I didn't."

Which strikes me as a bit petty really? Like he's hung up on something one teacher said to him five years ago.

He needs to move on, my time in school was awful with all of my teachers because they didn't understand my learning disability. Uni improved my life tenfold and I don't sit and think about them all day 🙄
that and the Oxford rejection is probably the most he’s ever been told “no” hence why he’s so hung up on it, it’d explain the entitlement if that’s the case

I just read the whole thread and lowkey he's digging himself a hole, it doesn't sound any better with an explanation, the explanation really wasn't good. I know you're not going to connect with everyone you work with but in a normal work context it's like posting on your LinkedIn about a project you worked on and saying "but I didn't connect with one colleague in particular", singling someone out is just not a very nice thing to do. Plus no one is entitled to a follow back. Idk man, it's a bit of a misguided thing to say and he really should've taken the whole thing out of the video
Definitely! His Twitter thread didn't make it any better at all, and certainly wouldn't make Holly feel any better to read after seeing his video already. Your comparison to the real world of work is so true.

Just because people ask drama-inspiring questions on your Q&As, doesn't mean you have to answer them. Some things are worth being candid about, e.g. mental health, others it's perfectly fine & preferred to keep to yourself.
