I agree that it’s unusual he hasn’t made a video about his degree results. I think the non-detriment policy basically involves degree classifications being calculated twice, both in the usual way and disregarding assessments completed in the current circumstances, with a student being awarded the higher classification, to ensure that nobody is disadvantaged.

I would be surprised if he re-applies to Oxford. I know someone who has just graduated with a first and the workload is intense, with one essay (or more) per week. Jack portrays himself as someone who leaves his essays until the last minute, which I’m sure is not endearing to Admissions Tutors.

is it just me or does anyone else think that £17 for a planner is expensive? This seems to feed into the commercialisation of ‘productivity’. There is a useful article below about this:

He's only 1st generation, probably because typically it was only doctors, vets, lawyers & clergy who needed degree level. Nurses, teachers etc went to colleges and gained diploma's - now most subjects are taught at degree level
He is still incredibly privileged, but the further education system has changed dramatically, so his parents possibly would've gone to Uni had they been of age now. Also University education is not an indication of intelligence, which I think a lot of Studytubers forget.

Yes he is a product of the Blair generation...also firsts are easier to get than they were 20 to 30 years ago...and I say that as someone who has just got one.

Haha I think higher education is an indicator of intelligence tbh, I didnt think so until I went and noticed the difference in how I thought to how friends and family who didnt go thought. maybe intelligence is the wrong word but it opens the mind and causes you to question things. But again that may depend on the course you do. What academia isnt an indicator of it common sense and life skills, as anyone who has had to work with academics can testify to

travelling for leisure just seems so careless to me... aren't you supposed to quarantine for like 14 days after you travel anyways? and none of these influencers do. it's sad that jack isn't even in the minority here either, a bunch of influencers i follow are running all over the place, hopping on planes and meeting up with their friends with no quarantining, masks, or distancing. they all preach about staying safe and go on and on about how hard lockdown has been (usually sad about their cancelled trips lol the irony) and then pull this shit for those of us who have been sitting at home since march or forced to work in these conditions, it's just a huge slap in the face... just because you *can* doesn't mean you *should*

They'd argue that you only have to quarantine from certain places so they don't need to. I've lost a lot of respect for a lot of people during this pandemic for completely ignoring the fact that the government is still asking people not to travel if they don't have to.

Yet - and also deleting ALL tweets about Oxford... we can only assume that he was rejected surely? As he already has the degree if he'd gotten an offer it would've been unconditional hence he would've shouted it from the rooftops. A good university guide would be one that is written by a group of students with different experiences plus advice from university staff and academics.

His is just one persons views and experiences, including his obvious bias.

I did read one of the 5 star reviews on amazon and I have a suspicion at least one is written by family. The language just seems old for a fresher

Compared to Ibz's profile, Jack appears to be pretty unambitious. He hasn't really done anything related to his subject (apart from studying it), such as wider participation in English literature associations, writers guilds etc. All he did at university seems pretty trivial in Oxbridge terms: being on the committee of an English literature society would have been a good foundation, but no, he was a committee member for the Hummus society.

He's not a particularly 'exceptional' person (for want of a better word), he's just hoping that Oxford can make him exceptional.

He looked SHOOK in that instastory and in the second half a little emotional. It was probably a punch in the stomach but 1. Money is clearly not an issue and 2. He’s an established influencer, his team will surely find him something.

I’d be interested to know what he is doing to prepare for his application for his MA. What is he going to do to make his application stand out? Clearly his book/influencer status/degree wasn’t hitting the right spot with Oxford.

Yeah I’m wondering about the Oxford thing too, I mean if they haven’t accepted him twice then he surely has to do something drastically different to improve his chances this time? Though I’m from Ireland so I’m not as familiar with how Oxford works.

Surely he should just apply to another university to do his Masters at this stage? I’m half worried for his mental health, he seems really fixated on getting into Oxford and I’d say the studytube’s general obsession with Oxford is fuelling alot of it. He’d be much better off if he just did his Masters somewhere else surely.

I will never understand the trend of using the word 'adulting' to describe living life.

Jack is in an incredibly privileged position, i.e. lives on his own after from his parents, where it's a lot easier to do what you please/be independent. Many people (myself included) can't afford to do that, especially in the current situation.

Yes, you have to look after yourself (i.e. eat well, clean, do laundry, pay bills etc.), but that's not much different to what you do at university. He acts like this is all new to him, when it isn't. It could be a ploy to seem relatable to his younger audience, but he's alienating himself from viewers his age who have got to do exactly the same (but without the moaning).

I'll joke with my friends about adulting and not wanting to do "adult" things like going food shopping but I wouldn't post it to social media for thousands of people to see?

Exactly, often it's not what you say (or the meaning of the message) but how you say or phrase it. Jack isnt as good or clear as he thinks he is. He often comes off as patronising, insincere and superior
