I love Eve, she's the only StudyTuber I don't dislike - maybe because she's actually honest. I think she went through a period of being very unsure of herself but I admire her so much for coming out (the amount of hate on her thread saying she was 'queerbaiting'? like honey it's not queerbaiting if you're actually queer) and I genuinely think she will go on to do amazing things. She's driven, focused, and has an actual plan. I don't see Jack/Ruby/Eve Bennett/Jade having such success, I wouldn't be surprised if most of them go on to do YouTube full time.

Not that that's an issue, what works for them, but Eve Cornwell is about to become an actual lawyer. That's who I want to look up to, not Jack 'I haven't matured enough to realise that Oxford is not for me despite being almost 22' Edwards.

I said she was queerbaiting before she came out because it did feel that way at the time.

Jack is one of those students who got to the end of his degree and went "oh wait, I forgot to think about what comes next". I was one myself, and I know how quickly it comes around and how weird it is to watch everyone else get their adult jobs around you. Eve went into uni with a plan and knew exactly where she wanted to be when she left.

Most YouTubers who set up a PO Box at least preface it with a message that they don't expect people to send them stuff but are happy to receive it if people really want to. Most of the time it's snacks, letters and artwork, but books!

He didn't reveal the exact percentages, stating that he had to calculate them and all that jazz, which I find odd. I guess he wasn't proud of his low First.
He also mentioned he wrote such a good essay earlier this year that his professor told him to publish it like a research paper, which if he did, I think it might boost his CV for next year's Oxford application. I hope he spends his gap year getting some job or research experience, if not, his application will be dismissed again...

I can’t speak for all universities but I will say if Jack wants a career in academics it often looks better to move around. The danger of attending the same university is that it can be seen as you being unable to get in somewhere else (acceptance rates are higher among graduates of the university typically). It also connects you with way more people in the field. Obviously none of these are issues for people not hoping to go into the traditional form of academics of researching while lecturing but if that’s what he wants Durham might not have been the best choice.

Tbh I've only ever heard this from US academics. Staying at the same institution is not perceived badly in the UK and it's quite common. Sometimes it's the smarter option - if it's a highly regarded for the subject you're interested in, if you've got a great supervisor lined up there, and has a good employment outlook then there's no point switching institutions for the sake of it if you love the one you're at.

There's definitely some benefits to moving around in terms of getting to know a new city and networking, but it isn't going to boost your academic CV compared to someone who stayed at the same uni as other factors are more important. Plus there's so much collaboration between universities nowadays that that staying at one institution isn't so much of an issue anymore.

I think he definitely needs to widen his scope for the masters applications, whether that includes Durham or other non-Oxford unis. I think he said once that Oxford is the only one that does the particular masters he wants to do, but I'm sure there's similar enough courses out there.

I discovered him just recently, during his booktube era and I enjoy his new book videos. His study videos are cringy but looking back at his old videos and comparing them with the current ones, he seems to be more mature now.
You guys discussed his sexuality very early on in this thread and I didn't see any discussion about him being bisexual, which is probably the case with his sexuality. I don't know what you think but as another bi guy, it seems obvious to me.

I mean, he'd be bonkers to get a PhD in English without plans to go into academia. Any other job would prefer either a more specialized degree (eg. law) or relevant work experience.
In the US, academia is crazy saturated, with more PhD graduates than available tenure-track jobs. I'm not sure if the UK has the same problem, but if it does, he should take that into consideration.

It's super saturated here too, boomers and the older Gen Xs don't retire properly so younger academics struggle to get a foot in the door, and corona has caused massive layoffs and forced people to take "voluntary" severance.

Fair play to Ruby Granger, at least she’s making the most of being at Exeter, whereas Jack has seemingly deliberately taken a gap year and will probably only reapply to Oxford... again. The price of that planner is ridiculous.

I’ve watched him for a while now and I just can’t get over that one story where his planner company (ink outside the box) almost got scammed... I can’t recall it all to well but there was quite the discussion on GG because it seemed like the company made quite a few mistakes and it all seemed a bit off ...


Also he is SO hung up on Oxford -it’s quite sad really...

Just watched half of his new video and got bored. I love books and reading. So, at first, I loved him doing the trend, but now, it is becoming so boring. Wish he would diversify his content like before.

On another note - he should give that Victorian Christmas book to Ruby. Bet she'd enjoy it.

Is it just me who doesn't understand why he makes a big deal out of being a first-generation uni student? Maybe I'm missing something because I'm not one. Personally, both my parents went to uni, but that was 30+ years ago in a foreign country with a completely different system. For most people with parents that went to uni, their parents' experiences are outdated and probably not all that helpful?

When it came for me to start thinking about uni, it was my school that explained the application system and me who did all the research. The only way in which my parents were involved was by being supportive of my decision. I'm definitely sure that it might be less likely for parents to be supportive if you're the first one in the family to go to uni. But provided your parents are supportive, I don't see how being a first-gen uni student or not makes much difference?

I know now it can make a small difference on applications etc now, I think a lot of that is to do with quotas and generally 1st gen students are typically working/lower middle class now?
Good on ANYONE who goes to uni, or gets an apprenticeship etc etc

Haha it's weird to actively look out comments and then complain but influencers are generally a weird bunch.

In fairness though those photos are nicer than his usual full length shots. He does look better although the outfit is an acquired taste but to each their own.

Some people just don't work well online, I know I don't. 6 months of pandemic hasn't been enough to sort that out sadly.

I need to go somewhere else physically that isn't my own home to be productive. Always have done, I was a nightmare for homework in school...

I'm really annoyed seeing Jack travelling to Germany during this, I know it's technically allowed but it strikes me as super irresponsible

Regarding the comments about ‘adulting’ I wonder if this is all part of the brand, rather than his actual experience. I agree it seems superficial, especially in the current circumstances, but social media is all about getting views, etc, so I think this might be a form of attention seeking.
