This dude has a massive chip on his shoulder about Oxford- I know a couple people who did Oxbridge and the minute their undergrad was up they got out of there they disliked the experience that badly.

Also looking at English league tables, there's not actually that big a difference in the top 10 unis for English so surely he'd be best applying to all of them and looking at the research from each department to see what the best fit is in that way.

And the first gen uni student thing: I'm middle class and technically 1st gen (I had a cousin go first cause he's a little older than me, but no one else in my family has a degree)- first in my family ever to be doing a PhD too. But I don't boast about being a 1st gen student cause it doesn't actually matter that much.

This is so tone deaf. So many people will be spending Christmas alone this year/stuck in another country and would do anything to see family. You don’t realise how lucky you are Jack.

I get that family can be annoying sometimes but holy fuck.

I only applied to one MA but I did it years after graduating, so my situation was different but I don’t think it’s unusual for people going back to uni who have jobs and who live in the area to apply to only one or two programs.

Jack however, should’ve applied to Durham if he was happy with his university and department instead of pinning his hopes on Oxford. Not only does he know the department, they can help him with finding funding and getting his PhD application perfect if he went down that route.

Ok forgive my ignorance, but why is it Oxford that all of these studytubers seem obsessed with? Just find it interesting that far more of them seem to apply and go there over Cambridge.

I agree, I always thought mugging meant you’d been attacked and robbed? So Jack was almost a victim of theft rather than a mugging. Obviously I wouldn’t wish either on anyone but there is a key difference between the two and the distinction is important.

This is the thing, what he has achieved (building a respectable YouTube channel and getting a book published and getting a first) is to be commended. But he is undoing all of that by taking himself way too seriously. All he had to do was hold his hands up and apologise for the mask and lack of social distancing but no, he still thinks he did nothing wrong or that he is above the rules. Helps explain why almost half of new covid cases now seem to be in under 30s.

Also..what has happened to his dress sense

It feels like he has a bit of a superiority complex. It's ok that I've moved back to Durham during a pandemic, and I don't have to follow laws concerning the safety of others, and of course Oxford has to accept me at some point.

We should all be proud of who we are as people but I do hope that in leaving university he realises the world doesn't revolve around him.

I suspect he, like a lot of influencers and content creators, are now desperate for content especially now his university journey has ended. And that I think is the reason he was going abroad to study and wants oxford. Both give a unique niche to make his videos stand out. Without that he is just another vlogger with a normal (albeit privileged) life

Exactly and perhaps in the next couple of months you will have brand new studytubers ready to start their YouTube journey, ready to take their place.

Would always recommend going to your previous uni, I've just started an MA at the same uni I graduated from this year and yeah, sweet discounts on fees and scholarships, plus knowing the uni and city and an entire department helps a lot sometimes. But hey Oxford is just too tempting for some people I guess

Also he said that he has a flat to move into in London - I don't understand 1) how he can afford one, 2) how he would pass the credit checks, and 3) why he would bother to waste the money when he's not doing anything there.

I'm so glad someone said this. Jack even said himself that he didn't need a job financially, he just didn't want to do YouTube full-time (which is respectable, but come on, don't moan about being unemployed in the middle of the biggest job crisis any of us have ever seen when you're loaded enough to rent a flat in CENTRAL LONDON).

I know this tweet is talking about the UK government’s policy towards A-level results but to me it just seems like Jack is bragging about the fact that he did all his work last minute and still got a 1st.

Some people, myself included, have to work incredibly hard for the grades we want (it’s highly unlikely that I’ll get a 1st) and I put in so many hours of research and essay writing to get the grades I aim for. Yet, it seems that people like Jack can just swoop in last minute and get a 1st without even really ‘trying’.

I feel like he didn’t mean much harm by it but I felt slightly insulted by his phrasing of it, as if we can all just do things last minute.

He lived in his own for the second lockdown as his flat mate went back to Scotland (I can’t remember why) and then never seemed to come back, he went back home just before Christmas, and then where he lives got put into tier 4 and he’s not been back to London since
I think it’s been a massive waste of money living in London during a pandemic
The student flat okay they gifted it to him but paying like £1k per month when you could be at home for a lot less, fair enough change your room around if it’s not what you want but seems silly

I think moving to London was the worst decision he could make. Fair enough if we were in normal times, but living in London is essentially useless right now if you really don't need to be there. I know a lot of people who have moved back into family homes outside of London for lockdown just because it's so much better for mental health for a start (house in an area with green space and a garden vs a tiny studio flat surrounded by concrete).

I get that when he first moved there everything was a little bit different, but I still think it was a pointless move after this unite students deal ran out. He lives in Sussex like me, if he had really needed to go to London for anything a train there takes little more than an hour if that (given he was getting a train back to Sussex every weekend to see his family, that wouldn't have been a problem and arguably he'd have been on a train a lot less.)

If Oxford see the tweet it hardly strengthens his case (and yes unis do sometimes look up students social media the same way employers do). For an english graduate you think he would understand that what he has said reflects badly on him and his attitude?! Plus he is criticising on one hand but admitting he does the same on the other.
