When he was still at Durham and posting videos about how clever he was I got into a beef with him because he went on and on about the fact he had never heard of Anita Brookner and James Kelman. He seemed to think both with obscure authors and didn't like me pointing out they had both won the Booker prize and were pretty much household names as a result. I then got all his tween fans accusing me of "gatekeeping" literature, and how dare I suggest that either Brookner or Kelman were worth the admission price if Jack hadn't heard of them.
Well, if you will gatekeep such obscure authors 😏😏

Man, this thread makes me feel better. There is just something about him that fills me with rage and looking at his viewer count and complete adoration in his comments, I thought I was the only one who found him insufferable. Then I found this thread. 🤣

He does use clickbait and seo keywords well, and I wonder how many of his views are from his subscribers, or from the YouTube algorithm recommendations thanks to his constant use of celebrities. Are his viewers really invested and engaged in him, or do they just care about whichever celebrity he is posting about.

ha! If Jack hasn't heard of them they must be the most obscure of the obscure.

...Despite both being in every bookstore I've ever had the pleasure of browsing.
To me it was confirmation of just how dim he actually is. While he continues to cry about his two (maybe now three?) rejections from Oxford, it is exactly this sort of behaviour which should alert him to why he keeps being rejected. He is clearly not teachable. He doesn't have either the sense or the humility to simply say - "Ok, I haven't heard of these authors but I really want to know more about them, tell me more..." Instead he goes on about the fact he is a "published author" and doesn't need the likes of me pointing out the obvious.

Having worked with uni admissions before. Jack's attitude is fairly common in the more entitled applicants who can't comprehend being rejected. Also nothing puts academics and admissions staff off more than someone who doesn't take no for an answer. What that is telling them if you have attitude at the admissions stage, what will you be like when you get marks you don't like, or a unit or group you don't like etc etc. It speaks to character.

Sadly published author means very little these days, Joey Essex is a published author..... Also, anyone who has got to the top of their field doesn't assume they know everything. The willingness to learn and grow is what makes people successful.

I'd always thought Jack was one of the better studytubers...is that wrong? I know he has a major problem with accepting his rejection/s but aside from that? Sidenote: this is interesting to me because I have a connection to Durham Uni (not a student there) and Jack really does fit a 'type' that I associate with the place. No disrespect to any Durham students browsing here - I know you're not all like that. 😆

Haha. Much as students like to claim to be individuals, work with them long enough and you see patterns and groups emerge. That can be from different courses or like you say, different universities. People aren't as original as they like to think

Durham students have a bit of a new money attitude. By that I mean rich people who have always been rich (or have been for a long time) often don't go on and on about it or play it down and treat others with respect, rather than new money who show it off all the time and often treat those poorer like tit. Durham students have the 'couldn't get into oxbridge but Durham is as good as' attitude and see themselves as superior

I always thought Durham was stuffed full of old money types who were too dim to be accepted into Oxbridge and console themselves by thinking they're at least richer/posher than all the Vee K types who got into Oxbridge via some social justice initiatives
I know plenty of Etonians who went to Durham after being rejected from Oxbridge. Some of them even wear their family's signet rings at Durham lmao

Does anyone know Jack's family background? I know he's not as rich as Roobee cos he went to a comprehensive school but wat do his parents ACC. do?
Are they pushy parents?
Are they in similar industries to him?

One of my friends volunteered as a Clearing call operator last year at our university, and one student called purely to demand a place when he'd been rejected on Results Day, then his mother called to demand it too, then (and I have no idea why they agreed to do this) his MP called to ask if there was anything they could do for the rejected applicant, because the MP himself was an alumnus...

I feel like Jack isn't far off this type of person.

Yep...happens all the time. So many students are like that, and pulling in some connections to people higher up isn't uncommon either.

What did you blow their minds with today?
I told them he is not reading the books that he claims he has read. Which is simply the truth. But the more rabid of his fans were all over me, justifying his lies, telling me he did so read them! When I told them that there are only two possible explanations for his bizarre book 'reviews' being full of holes and errors either (a) he doesn't read the books (b) he doesn't comprehend what he's read.

It didn't go over at all well. They all turned on me telling me I was nasty, didn't have a job, was unqualified, was bitter etc etc and (ironically) should stop insulting a stranger on the internet!
