Is this just an extension of what he used to say while at uni?

Didn't he go on and on about something, like being first generation, or being working class or something?
Went on about being from a state school background…..

Oh yeah, he loved to mention at every possible opportunity that he was from a state school.

A friend of mine is like him: always saying she's low on money when in actuality she earns x3 my salary and lives rent-free with her parents.

Please 😂 He probably asks for £1000+ for every ad, no way he’s broke. Acting like this is so cringey…

But it’s what has become fashionable… to pretend you’re working class! He promotes something at Durham that’s about state school students but there’s a very big difference when you’re in a middle class area at a state school vs being at a working class school or on FSM!

Yep victimhood and coming from a deprived background is hot with celebs and influencers. Makes then relatable so they can sell their tat.

Being from a state school means bugger all unless it's a state school in a deprived area. It's like when people say they are first generation to go to uni, I just want to say 'so', so are half the people here.

I know it’s ‘trendy’ but doesn’t make it any less cringey. I knew people like that in uni too and it always made everyone super uncomfortable.
Also pretending to be poor whilst living in the flat he’s living in, it’s straight up telling his subscribers that he thinks they’re stupid tbh. We all know by now how much influencers are making. 😶
I’m not from the uk so idk what state schools/working class schools are 😅

And there’s a big difference between students like Jack at Durham uni who might have gone to state school but are from a middle class background and students like me, northern, working class, from a really rough school and poor area. Honestly the classism I’ve faced at Durham is unreal, and students like Jack are part of the problem.

Literally that's always pissed me off about Jack, Durham is one of the biggest areas of education inequality because you either go to a private school or a massively underfunded state school. Jack has no clue what it's like for most people from Durham.

For a channel his size, he could definitely ask for a couple k for a sponsored video and be well within the industry standards. I'm not saying that's justified but he also shouldn't be selling himself short (but also obviously not say he's broke, I'm just saying 1k isn't that outrageous for an ad)

Doubt anyone who has holidayed in Paris would ever want to live there for any length of time. Stunning historic city but it's the dirtiest major city I've ever visited. Makes London look spotless.
Come on, Paris is not that dirty, especially compared to Rome for instance, which is imo the dirtiest city I've been too (still gorgeous tho). I guess I'm probably biased cause I'm French and used to live there. Tbh I still regret leaving Paris, it truly is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, and dare I say, the world. It's one of the smallest capitals in Europe its very manageable and has great transportation too. Also being able to go to London so quickly via the Eurostar was so convenient. Pity it is so expensive..

I remain confused as to how he decides which book content goes on his main channel and which book content goes on the Jackinthebooks channel. Also confused as to why he has a book channel at all. if he's pivoting to creating primarily book content (as "Youtube's resident librarian*" why not just streamline it all onto the main?

*and what an insult to the qualified librarians who create book content on YT/IG/tiktok

I haven't visited a huge amount of European cities but Paris honestly surprised me with how dirty it was compared to others.

Madrid was so clean it was genuinely like being in a utopia
Milan less so but still felt very clean
Paris I just remember walking down streets filled with litter
London used to feel probably on Paris's level in the 90s but it has gotten its act together in the last decade and feels much nicer now
Still was a great holiday and very fun though

I like jack most of the time, yes he can be super cringey but his videos are mostly pretty chill and easy content, I really liked the videos he made during the first months of the pandemic they were fun to watch. but the 'I'm so broke' thing annoys me too, like even if he didn't make a lot on social media is parents are clearly not poor and he'd be able to get help from them for a while if things went downhill. like look at their house it's so nice (at least what he showed on camera) I was so jealous of people like him at the start of the pandemic when they were spending their days lounging in their nice big houses and gardens, meanwhile I was stuck in a tiny apartment with my parents for a few months....

I wonder what will happen if/when jack goes back to uni for his Masters, do you reckon he will remain in the booktube sphere or try to fit in some study tube content as well? I feel like study tube is increasingly viewed as toxic so he might choose to stick to the book content. although I'd like to see studytube vids from someone doing their MA

The problem with masters is they are harder to do once you start living (e.g. Work, mortgages etc). Especially on a full time attendance basis. I do wonder if he will ever do one. Book tube seems to be working for him, and he may not want to go back to student life. The longer you leave it between UG and PG, the harder it is.

There's a reason that for most unis the vast majority of masters students are from overseas, in fact in many cases if it weren't for overseas students they just wouldn't run the course. And in some unis they may struggle to survive.

I'm watching his latest vlog now, and it does feel a bit... weird. Like, I thought he was there for a screen-writing course, and yet he said he'd just extended his stay like he's not there for a specific purpose and just for a short time? But he's learning French and joining a gym too?

And regarding signing up to Level 2 rather than Level 1 for some reason - it's not that French is hard per se, it's that Jack underestimated how active language learning works.

I kind of feel sorry for him, he seems a bit directionless right now. I feel like staying in the UK and getting a 'normal' job might have been better growth for him in all honesty.

So… it seems like he doesn’t even have a job here? Did he make youtube his full time job? But then why move to France?
