i generally quite like jack. i’ve read a lot of good books per his recommendation and he seems like a decent guy. there’s one thing that really grinds my gears though and i need to get it off my chest. he uses the same jokes and puns every single video. has anyone else noticed this?? it’s like he comes up with one witty thing to say and runs it into the ground. petty but it does my head in
I agree. If I hear "I could read [x author]'s GROCERY LIST" one more time..

He does this with everything. Jokes, videos ideas (which he got from other people to begin with), even his "thoughts" on books that he "read" will often be word for word the same vague cover pull-quote across multiple videos. He doesn't have an original idea in him. It's all just the same stolen ideas and bad puns recycled over and over again.

It's so weird because he mentioned reading Master and Margarita ONCE and never again. What he did mention sounded suspiciously vague. There was so much more to the book, I was pleasantly surprised with it.

It definitely solidifies the suspicion that he doesn't read most of what he claims to. When he can mention the same book several times in multiple videos and can only spout the exact same generic, rehearsed line every time (if I have to hear that Vee is a "powerhouse" and a "trailblazer" ever again, it'll be too soon) and can never say anything specific about the book, it's not a good look.

Does anyone know what his parents do specifically? Like are they teachers etc.?
Although its admirable that a boy enjoys reading as much as Jack does (most people who read are girls and boys are made fun for reading), its not admirable that jack pretends to read more than he does
why lie?

views and money.
It feeds his ego, too. Tonnes of comments saying things like, "I'm so jealous! I can't even read 10 books a year and Jack's reading 10 books a day!" It's the Ruby Granger brand of narcissism: They'll say any old tit to get hollow praise and feel superior, and the fact that they didn't actually accomplish anything doesn't seem to matter to their broken brains, they still process the compliments the same way.

I don't think he lies about how much he reads. However I think he skim reads to get through things quickly and that's why he isn't able to form any vaguely complex thoughts on the books.

If it's one of your primary hobbies it's really not that tricky to read 100 books a year. Say you read 100 pages a day, about a page a minute, that's about 1.5-2 hours, so read on your lunch break and before you go to sleep. An average book length of 365 pages will give you 100 books. It doesn't seem ridiculous, and that's before you might add in something like audio books on your commute.

I think the problem comes from not giving yourself the breathing space and time to think about the book. He may read the words on the page and then just move on to the next rather than thinking about his opinions and the reasons behind them. It's fine to do that it you're a casual reader, but making a career off of it you need to be able to form those opinions.

Why does jack even want to write a book tho?
written fiction is not that profitable unless its adapted into a film/tv show
does he want his work adapted into a film/tv show

It's not just him struggling to form complex thoughts though. In many cases he's unable to say anything about the books beyond what you'd find on the back cover.

He just makes grand, very vague declarative statements that could apply to any book in a given genre, like "This book gave me goosebumps! The author is an icon!", "Like a hug in book form!" or "This book will make you feel inspired!" No further information provided. And then he'll recycle those comments verbatim if he needs to discuss the book again.

I'm sure he reads a lot of books, but a significant amount he's very obviously reading a Goodreads synopsis and saying something vague and generic that won't show his hand and out him as a fraud to his undiscerning fanbase. It's not the logistics of him reading lots of books that's the problem. Reading that much is totally possible, but the fact that he's never willing or able to go into even the briefest detail about many of the books is a dead giveaway.

also stolen puns... or at least f*cking tiktok sounds as jokes every other sentence

sorry are you 12? The 23 y/o men I know that read don't get made fun of for it (at least not more than the women, possibly even less than the women)

I think a lot of it just is him just not knowing how to talk about it without spoiling the book. I do think he skim reads the books

Some booktubers do a short review, then a *spoiler* review in more depth for those who've read the book.

I would love it if he did that. Or even just go the more "Book Leo" route (cozy reading vlogs, chatty reviews) more than just clickbait-y types where he just kinda runs through 10 books in one video. Imagine spending hours reading a book only to cut your thoughts on it to a few minutes because alGoRIthM.

yeah i know, i was just saying i think because he doesn't do that he reuses sentences and doesn't go as in-depth. you could certainly argue he should be making spoiler reviews but i was merely commenting why i think (with the current content that he does) his reviews sometimes seem shallow

I honestly don't think it would even be lucrative for him to have express (or form, really) more in depth thoughts on the books he claims to read. I imagine a large portion (not all, but it's what I've gleaned based on the comments) are young wannabe-literature-lovers, the dark-academia without the studying types. The aesthetic is more enjoyable to them than the actual task.

Imagine the kind of person who likes pop culture psychology - the meaningless slogans, the aesthetically pleasing images on instagram. Now imagine summarising actual psychological studies to them. They'd all be mentally clocked out in seconds! The same would happen to Jacques' audience. Just keep the bright colours, the tired references to whatever flash in the pan meme or soundbite is going around, and boom! A captive young (higher adsense for the younger ones!) audience.

these younger, shallower audiences are a bane on the culture
how do these people have the spare time to watch jack anyways? Shouldnt they be working/studying?
Or are they all living off mum and dad's money?

Exactly!

I'd really like to see a Youtuber who is to books what Lindsay Ellis is to movies. Hope that makes sense.
