He is an English graduate yet writes such a poorly written statement while also insulting his viewers (aka readers). And yes, they do have clout as that is the niche you are working in and the audience/customer you are trying to attract and make money from. You want to be big in the book tube niche, obviously you go after readers.

If he does read them then he needs to do more than surface level reviews and explain why he misses things (like phoebe highlights above)

The entitlement is unreal.

"I'm an influencer, of course I'm allowed everywhere. Look at this wage slave trying to tell me otherwise, doesn't he know who I am? lol"

What a pathetic little cretin Jack is. I hope it turns out that this employee is an Oxford graduate.

I'm really perplexed by his last video. Like is it just Jack being Jack or is reading non English books not a thing in like the USA, UK and AUS/NZ? I thought everyone had read translated books, like he makes it sounds like it's something super rare and out there to do, im just confused
Ikr, i would at least expect him to be familiar with russian literature since it holds a great importance among world literature im not russian but im familiar with many authors.

His approach to reading translated books is like he is reading the books in the original language o_O

While we're comparing Studytubers, I liked Eve Bennett more than the others. She seemed more down-to-earth and balanced. Haven't seen any of her videos for ages, though.
I have several mutual friends with Eve and tbh they all say she's very normal. I think she's focusing on her final year at Oxford atm - she was super self-involved during the height of the pandemic but she seems to have got past that now. Also she's not signed to Sixteenth because she didn't make her name as a Studytuber - she's just a YouTuber that happens to be at uni (which is better imo, she has a way more balanced lifestyle and seems way smarter than Jade, Jack or Ruby). Sixteenth just gives me bad vibes, especially as they seem to be trying to decide what counts as 'good influence' and what doesn't, which is completely subjective and more caters to their desperation to push out stationery products

I was looking at jobs in marketing and social media so I took a look at Sixteenth's hiring page because I'd heard of them and I do believe the field of YouTuber management is a big one and its interesting to me - but their entire company ethos just icks me.

https://www.notion.so/sixteenth/Careers-d8f629d15e484910993828eedeede8f7 - for those of you who are interested. Yes, their careers page is hosted on Notion. That was the first red flag.

Why does every video I see of his just ooze try-hard energy? In what way is 'shot of espresso' comparable with the rather apt 'pretentious insufferable little cunt'? Literally just post the dm and get on with getting your sympathy, stop the try hard 'lol i get hate dms but i dont care' charade.
I find this with most YouTube personalities. I'll never understand what's wrong with being yourself and saying 'hey guys, here are some books and here's my thoughts.' Instead they all put on this fake quirky and 'chaotic' act. It's painful to sit through.

He doesn't say no-one speaks english or that there are no english books. At 0:38 he says "because I'm moving away to a country where English is not the primary language and therefore the books won't all be in English". I think it's a fair point, no?
Agreed, plus "non-English speaking" country is usually used for countries where English isn't the/not one official language, isn't it? I feel like what he actually said got kind of taken out of context on here

So he doesn't re read 1984. Bit lazy. Personally having read it a few years ago now I can't really remember the details/writing style. Just that I loved it. But if I was making a video talking about it I'd definitely read it again.

He tells us about his "dump truck" sitting on his pencil and splitting it in half Again. We get it. It happens. He talks about it in every video as if nobody has ever done that. And the self depreciating humour again. Bore off Jack!

Then he uses the word "choreography" wrong. As far as me and Google are concerned it's a bit weird to say "choreography of the city" wtf you mean layout or something?

I watched his new romance video - haven’t watched him in ages but I read 99% romance so I was curious- and Jesus Christ I’d forgotten how absolutely fucking annoying & cringey he is

the way he talked about TSLD (It’s by no means a book I loved) did piss me off- you can criticize a book without calling it dog sh*t & just shitting on it - then goes on to say the hating game has the same tropes but done well?! But fails to mention the creepy shit (* spoiler* but “I painted my room the colour ofyour eyes within like a week of meeting”)

this man would not know what hit him if he read half the stuff me & my friends love

also I will never get why people complain about the French numbering system for the numbers in the 70s - 90s, yes it's multiplications and additions but no French person sees them as that, you just have to imagine it as a word that just happens to read as "fourtwenty" for 80 for instance. Just read that as a word and that's it. When you read the word "understand" your mind doesn't go "wait understand is made up of under+stand" you just read it in one go.
Indeed - if he learns a phrase, and then always tries to translate it back into English, not only is that not a great way of absorbing a new language, but of course it's not going sound/look 'right'. He needs to get used to conveying the meaning, not breaking down every single grammar point compared to English.

Having classes taught in the target language is so much better for immersion, and stops learners being too tempted to just switch back to English. If he was serious about learning (which we don't really know, as he hasn't said why he's learning?), he should appreciate that.

But let me tell you all about those creme de la creme, primo-dreamo, would-definitely-swipe-right-on-them nuevo classics that you all have to read."
Jack literally said he'd swiped right on the books in his 'Blind Date with Books'. 😂

He's such a parody of himself.

There’s some interesting criticism out there on The Midnight Library (including on Haig’s tattle thread 😉). That said, I’m sure Jack does a poor job critiquing it. Because he isn’t so good any anything beyond surface level reflection in his videos.

or she just prefers to be kept off the internet? she's not an influencer so i guess its not weird for her to not want to be online
I presume she wants to stay vaguely anonymous, which is absolutely fair enough. I've always found it cringey when YouTubers pressure their reluctant partners into being in videos, so Jack's doing the right thing by her I feel.

Does he still “live in Paris”?

The roof on his latest Instagram story looks very suburban Middle England.
He came back to England for Christmas, and because of new COVID restrictions in France, he can't get back now. His visa was cancelled so he is applying for another one.

Source: his 'books I bought but haven't read yet' video.

I'm so annoyed his new video is a book of the month ad, unless it's changed recently, they're not available outside the US. And I get that he probably has quite a few American followers but still, he has a strong UK and European audience (I'd assume) and he doesn't even care it's not available here?

I haven't watched a video by Jack in a few months and I must admit, that he sometimes has some good book recommendations (in comparison to Ruby). But since when does he have 812.000 subscribers? 😨
Everyone has better recs compared to rubster :ROFLMAO:

Just curious - has Jack ever posted any of his writing online?
He's never actually written anything from the sounds of it.

It's like all his talk about wanting to take a screenwriting course despite showing no interest in film; he's just desperately searching for hobbies and personality traits to try to stay relevant to an audience.
