Sidenote: this is interesting to me because I have a connection to Durham Uni (not a student there) and Jack really does fit a 'type' that I associate with the place. No disrespect to any Durham students browsing here - I know you're not all like that.

Haha. Much as students like to claim to be individuals, work with them long enough and you see patterns and groups emerge. That can be from different courses or like you say, different universities. People aren't as original as they like to think

Durham students have a bit of a new money attitude. By that I mean rich people who have always been rich (or have been for a long time) often don't go on and on about it or play it down and treat others with respect, rather than new money who show it off all the time and often treat those poorer like shit. Durham students have the 'couldn't get into oxbridge but Durham is as good as' attitude and see themselves as superior

Look up what having cultural and social capital does to your attainment at school, they’re so valuable, it’ll help you get your foot in the door for things too, like jobs and certain job sectors

Put it this way, they might not have sent jack to a private school or have that sort of money but they’re middle class

Has he said what he's actually doing in Paris, apart from being there for the aesthetic? I really can't be bothered to watch him.

A screenwriting course, apparently, which is a pointless waste of time for so many reasons.

• You can't learn talent.
• You can learn the structure and technique of screenwriting very easily, but you'd get a much better, faster and broader education for free just by voraciously reading screenplays good and bad, practicing writing and using online resources, all of which you'd need to do anyway.
• Any course in screenwriting will offer zero advantage or inroad to a job in the industry.
• Like any art-based profession, any success will be dependent on talent, hard work and networking connections in the industry, not a piece of paper.
• If you're insistent on studying screenwriting in a classroom, doing it in a country where you don't speak the language isn't smart.

If he's got the money and the opportunity to move to a beautiful country, then good for him, but unless this is a loophole to get a study visa or something, the Mickey Mouse course he's taking is utterly pointless and seems like a step backward into studying again for the sake of it.

He's been talking mentioning taking a screenwriting course for years now from the looks of it, but has he ever expressed any interest in film beyond that? If he had any genuine interest in or passion for film and screenwriting, he'd have just started writing and learned by doing long before now.

Yeah I don't think he does either. Without leaving France it took me around 5 years to reach a C1 level. And I started to take English seriously around 15. Now, two years later I'm at a C2 level and can pretty much read anything. Overall, it took years of work (ok, a lot of it didn't really feel like actual work since it was just watching content and reading) but still, you really have to be determined otherwise you won't go far.

But since French and English share so much vocab and since he's living in France, he has a bit of an advantage.

Am I correct in thinking that he's no longer a student? The reason I ask is because I've just had a cheeky look at his Instagram, and he takes lots of photos of the books he's reading but he underlines passages in pencil.

Why?

He's probably just annotating for himself - I feel like a lot of readers do that so they can go back and find passages they liked (especially in online bookish spaces like bookstagram and booktube). And as a ~booktuber~ it's his job to talk about books, so I don't see anything wrong with underlining certain quotes/sentences he might want to refer to in a video?

You know, he's a booktuber, but he's flogging shirts. At least promote something on brand and that's useful to your audience, like local book shops or something.

I agree, I genuinely don't think I'd sell my soul like that. It's not all about money, it's about authenticity, reputation and morals.

Nothing against the idea of influencers, but work with brands and products that you use are fit your niche. Don't just sell any old tat

It would be much better to challenge yourself as a reader and read YA if you don't usually read that genre. Maybe find some YA that resonates with you and you actually become to love? Those types of videos are much more interesting.

But I guess those types of videos are also made by people who know what they love to read a.k.a. are self aware. Jack is only self aware enough to know he wouldn't succeed in making that video

Yeah, YA is a huge category. There's countless subgenres and tiers of quality. You'd think someone who identifies as "YouTube's Resident Librarian" and claims to read hundreds of books a year from all genres and walks of life would have some awareness of that.

Instead his solution is "I don't read YA, don't recall which YA books I pretended to read in the past, and I'm too lazy to do any research or read any now, so I'll just do something else entirely!" and his fans are like "Yes! Please teach us, king! We need your strength and wisdom in these harsh and unforgiving times!"

Why even suggest this if he has no interest in or intention of doing it and nothing to offer? It's like saying, "Who wants a video where I do a deep dive into ergodic literature? Most of you? Okay, well I don't read books, so it'll be a video about this cake I bought in a French bakery, because I live in France, in case you hasn't heard."

Actually, I know it isn't, the sign in the vid says 'on the continent' and he responded to someone in the comments saying it's the first on the continent but he does realize GB & Ireland (and the Greek Islands, Malta, Balearic islands, etc.) are in Europe, right? So why not make the voice over factually correct?

When he was still at Durham and posting videos about how clever he was I got into a beef with him because he went on and on about the fact he had never heard of Anita Brookner and James Kelman. He seemed to think both with obscure authors and didn't like me pointing out they had both won the Booker prize and were pretty much household names as a result. I then got all his tween fans accusing me of "gatekeeping" literature, and how dare I suggest that either Brookner or Kelman were worth the admission price if Jack hadn't heard of them.

Man, this thread makes me feel better. There is just something about him that fills me with rage and looking at his viewer count and complete adoration in his comments, I thought I was the only one who found him insufferable. Then I found this thread.

I used to be extremely careful about not breaking my book spines and even then, some books you literally just can't help but break it. I find it hard to believe that someone who reads 150+ books in a year, where we're talking 1 every 2 days or so, is going to have the patience to be extra careful with every book. I stopped caring about book spines not breaking long ago, mass market paperbacks of today are literally just not built to last so why strain yourself...

But even if he does still seemingly care about book spines, that was never the reason why I ever thought that he doesn't read all the books he says he does. I think he's going to run with the spines thing because it's the most easily disputed.

It was always the surface level thoughts that seemed to be ripped right from goodreads reviews that makes him sus. It's the fact that his 'reading vlogs' consist of him saying 'okay I'm going to start this book now' and then two seconds later when the daylight outside hasn't changed one single bit (like???, it's winter in England, it must have gotten at least a little darker), he's seemingly done and is moving onto another.
