Seriously, WTF is wrong with him?
Juno Dawson said this, in a gay magazine. There was outcry, obviously.Yes it’s all very strange. I also read someone say that gay men only settled for being gay because they failed at being trans. Like, what?
Stupid twat (King, not you, obviously!)Good. I just feel like it’s given him such an ego boost and he’s basking in the glory.
Was wonderful when it looked like he had her back, felt really emotional.
I'm not arguing, or saying it has any impact on statistics or rates, or that cases don't differ from person to person, but if I had shot down my son last year and told him he couldn't live as he felt, I'm almost certain I wouldn't have my son today, even as a daughter. He's told me himself in so many words. I didn't realise just how depressed he was.If someone with gender dysphoria cannot transition they are highly likely to take their own life.
Stop perpetuating the damaging myth that trans people not able to transition kill themselves.
IT’S NOT TRUE.
Transitioning makes no difference to rates of suicide in the trans community, and while we’re at it, the suicide stats peddled by Mermaids et al are entirely falsified.
Have never read a single book of hers! Not my thing. However, as a billionaire author I'm guessing many do like her writingAs her novels show, getting to the point instead of waffling on for pages and pages isn't JK Rowling's strong point.
Yes you make a very good point. There are many artists whose work I admire but their private lives may have been rather questionable (certainly by today's stringent toxic morality code). We must always separate art from the artist and acknowledge that we cannot apply todays attitudes to Regency times, Victorian times, 1940s, 1980s, etc etcWhatever happened to the simple times of ‘your fave is problematic’?
Regardless of what anyone thinks of her opinions, I don’t see the value in claiming she isn’t the author whether stated jokingly or not. Of course it’s upsetting when someone whose art you enjoy and who you consequently look up to has a wildly different opinion to your own. Even more so when you perceive that opinion as an attack on yourself or those you care about. But at the end of the day, she wrote the books, you enjoyed them, people are multifaceted and you can separate liking art from liking/agreeing with a person
Personally, I like mostly 20th century literature. When I learned of certain writers being overtly sexist and/or racist, I did find it off putting as a woman of colour. But I learned to accept that liking their work didn’t mean I had to like their opinions. If these writers were modern and alive like JK Rowling, I might decide not to fund them which would be fair enough. There’s nothing wrong with voting with your wallet. However, declaring them no longer the author because you don’t agree with them is petty and pointless
I know ‘your fave is problematic’ became a meme but there’s value in the concept. Someone can produce amazing work yet be flawed. They (or their work) can still be your fave, but it’s healthy to acknowledge their perceived downfalls. Categorising people as good/bad with no grey area is dangerous and upholds them to a superhuman standard as no one is fully good or bad (and that’s subjective anyway)
That’s a bit misleading.. Maya didn’t have her contract renewed because she refused to call people by their chosen gender. Supposedly JK has no problem with trans people, she said she would march with them. she just also believes in biological sex. Which is why I think the Maya thing upset a lot of people because deliberately misgendering people doesn’t really equate to being ok with trans people at all.I also don't see how it came out of nowhere. A few months ago she spoke up for Maya Forstater, who got fired from her job for saying biological sex is real. JK used her powerful voice to stand up for this woman, and that is when the torrent of abuse started from trans activists. According to her essay, she said she went off Twitter for a while as it was affecting her mental health. She only came back on because she was doing something with kids submitting drawings, which I've been seeing come up on my feed for a while now. Then she saw the article about "people who menstruate" and she felt she had to speak out against it.
I think it was written by a different person and JK was just part of the story idea. I don’t like all the stuff she added afterwards like Dumbledore being gay. If you want a gay character, write a gay character. Don’t just add it as an afterthought later, it felt very disingenuous. They’re also calling for Emma Watson to be the “author” so it’s not all about man taking from women. Not that I agree with this whole “re authoring” nonsense. It’s just like cancel culture.
I used to love the HP series until it became a merch monster. I lost a lot of respect when the play came out. It was like it was written by a completely different person and I couldn’t help but think that that’s what the series had come to- spin offs to make the money tick over.
Here one of our malls has a choice of female, male, and unisex bathrooms so it can work.Fair enough, that's your choice, can't say I would want to either - but I'm not saying there should ONLY be a unisex bathroom. But an additional bathroom. My son uses the disabled bathroom often to overcome the bathroom debate but then he gets dirty looks when he comes out, because he's clearly not disabled. But then he can get the same looks when he uses the female bathroom and the mens bathroom. A seperate bathroom would solve the issue.
It's not the most ideal situation as I'm sure many trans people who have no bad intentions would rather use the bathroom of the gender they identify as, but a unisex bathroom isn't oppressive either.
I’m sure she’s still living comfortable. No human being needs a billion poundsYes I think it bares repeating the fact that she fell down the rich list because of how much money she gave away. We all know billionaires give money to charity but I’ve never heard of anyone else having their earnings impacted by it.
Those of us who get called terfs sometimes call ourselves terves, just for funoh that's great I didn't know that, but what's a terve? yup pretty ironic isn't it?
Now, I didn’t say I disagreed with her. What has she said exactly that is hurtful?
ThisPersonally I think JK knew what she was doing with Harry Potter- she franchised the shit out of it and a bi-product of that was the huge communities of HP fans that created loads of inclusive safe spaces. Jk capitalised from these people by throwing out tidbits to fit the narrative of the fans. Dumbledore was gay etc. If JK fully intended on a fully inclusive and representative book she would have included this in the book she wrote- not the twitter side show. The facts remain that in her books there are no openly gay characters, there are few characters who aren’t white and the ones that are from other countries or cultures are heavily stereotyped, no characters with disabilities, no one who is gender fluid- the list goes on. Jk isn’t the hero - she just fed fans what they wanted.
I really feel for her fans who are struggling with their gender identity right now- having someone they look up to invalidate them must be awful![]()
I agree that's a situation that needs to have a solution found, that makes it a safe enviroment for all in the changing room.I remember the confusion I felt in the showers at our local gym, hearing a male voice just outside the door ….
Only to find it was a woman transforming from being a man. She was friendly, a nice person, but.....
It put a lot of members in a tricky place, particularly in a gym without individual changing rooms!
What do you say? How do you say this makes me feel uncomfortable, without sounding......unkind.
The lack of diversity in the Books I dont include in my reasons against her.Personally I think JK knew what she was doing with Harry Potter- she franchised the shit out of it and a bi-product of that was the huge communities of HP fans that created loads of inclusive safe spaces. If they get Hamilton taken down before Friday, I'll have them! I only paid for Disney + for that and I've had to sit through Frozen 2 because of it2+2=5
JK Rowling had some nasty pre-social media backlash back in the nineties. Ironically for pushing Satanism and witchcraft onto children, so book burnings and revisionism is not new. Twitter, as unpleasant as it is, is so full of bots, sock puppets and algorithms designed to limit the content people view, cannot be taken as reflective of the real world.
Anecdata warning: The real life contempt I find people, even youngsters who haven’t migrated to a cooler platform elsewhere already, hold it in reminds me of similar feelings towards the 4chan and infowars sites back in the day.
I noticed that Jacqueline Wilson was trending for a bit by the Twitter woke crowd as an alternative to JK Rowling, and then that had a backlash when it was pointed out that she too, but had less than 100% unquestioning support for the transgender movement.
Hamilton is on the block too, so quickly after being held up as woke icons.
The travails of student politics. So easily manipulated and hijacked by cynical professional agitators.
At least Mme Guillotine was retired centuries ago.
