Thoughts on this ‘analysis’ of JKRs writing, specifically the Harry Potter series? I think non of these things would matter to these people if she didn’t put out that banger of an essay last year and it’s funny how suddenly after years of being fans of the series, she’s a terrible writer after all
Also the series is set in the early 90’s at a British boarding school, times were very different and it’s written as such. Bet these people haven’t read any of her other novels.
I honestly find it so boring that people rag on Potter as racist/misogynistic/fat shaming/etc simply because they don't like JK Rowling.
There are certainly some valid critiques to be made of the Potter books but most of the criticisms I see are just so
petty. One of the comments on that thread literally complains that the Weasley's were poor
enough. That they shouldn't be described as poor because Ron never went hungry. Really?! Well kids, forget any lessons you learnt growing up about being tactful around poorer friends, understanding that not everyone is as fortunate as you, to be gracious and humble with money...clearly those lessons meant nothing because Ron and his family weren't starving.
The first Potter book was written over 25 years ago and the last one came out 14 years ago. I'm sure if JK were writing the books now she would do things differently. She's said as much in interviews since and proved she's moved on in her writing through Fantastic Beasts and the Strike novels.
I never though the HP books were misogynistic. Harry and (definitely) Ron were, as teenage boys sometimes are growing up - and that to me is a strength of JK in that she can truly get into the mind of whatever character she is writing, male or female. She details her characters so finely she can truly write in their voices.
Growing up I loved having Hermione, Professor McGonagall and Tonks as role models! Someone moaned on that thread that Parvati and Lavender were "airheads" because they were giggly. Well some teenage girls
are giggly and silly! And that's okay - you had Hermione as a example that some girls aren't like that. And clearly they
weren't "airheads" because they were competent members of the DA and did well in their classes.
Are we at a point where female characters aren't allowed to fall in love with a man? To feel heartbroken? To want to be married? These are normal things to want, or not want, whatever. Not every female character in a fantasy novel is a sword-wielding-badass-"I'm never gonna get married" type.
My main gripe with Potter is that they all got married and had babies very young. I always wondered how Ginny built such a stellar career in Quidditch and sports journalism in just 13 years with 3 pregnancies/babies/young children!
Perhaps Mr and Mrs Weasley helped out with the babysitting?!
