I will never understand why the grandmother didn’t take Isabelle to stay with her that night. Her daughter straight up said she needed a few cans to cope with the stress of looking after her. As far as the gran knew, Isabelle had broken her leg in an accident, had a virus afterwards, and ‘looked like an abused child’ because of all her bruises. Just bring the poor bloody kid home with you for the weekend, let mum drink herself unconscious without the responsibility of a two year old.
AW may very well have refused, not wanting her mother to see the full extent of poor Isabelle’s injuries. But the gran didn’t even try to take her, just said it upset her too much to see her deteriorate like that. She knew Isabelle wasn’t being properly looked after, she knew there was a new boyfriend on the scene, she knew her daughter was planning to drink and even bought the alcohol round for her.
I know she didn’t abuse Isabelle herself, but she certainly didn’t protect her either.

she offered for AW and Isabelle to come back and live with them so she must have been quite involved to suggest that.

She probably guessed she may neck the lot , that stuff sends people crazy!
I think 10 pints of any beers is likely to send people crazy. What is tragic is that she had an already ill daughter. How can you get banjaxed when you know you have to care for a child who is ill

We're comparing AW to a normal person. We will never make sense of it.

Shirking her responsibility .

Isabelle was obviously an inconvenience , getting in the way of her new relationship .

I wonder now that AW and HS are sober and have been for months... the reality of what they have done has hit them? Do sober people show remorse?
HS won't see his sons again.
AW daughter is dead.
They are only in their 20s. What a waste.

AW wanted alcohol to cope with the stress. She blatantly said that to her mother.

Anyone with half a brain cell knows that alcohol and stress do not go together. Especially if there is a sick child in the house. I feel like the grandmother was trying to placate her daughter.

Why did she buy her alcohol instead of saying 'actually love, not sure that's a good idea' or offer to have Isabelle over at hers to give AW a break from 'the stress'/let AW get bladdered without the child around? Was she scared of her own daughter? This seems a possibility based on her also siding with AW at the hospital and getting lary with the nurse and doctors.

I partly agree with a previous poster as well - grandmother seems to be making all the right noises when actually it might just have all been a bit inconvenient in reality.

HS was apparently shaking his head in the dock so no remorse there it seems
