Hi, I've been an unregistered lurker for a while. Just thought I'd give my thoughts on IG from a Welsh perspective. I speak Welsh, so I can appreciate the interviews his done in his mother tongue. A lot of the interviews are done by old school friends, so he tends to be more candid and relaxed in them imo (maybe in his American interviews he's trying to project a kind of 'suave Brit abroad' type, with a view to roles i suppose).
Anyway, for what it's worth, I think Ioan comes across as a genuine guy. There was a really interesting one-hour programme about him a few years ago on S4C, where an old school friend followed him/interviewed him. Ioan was very honest and open about his struggles in Hollywood as an actor, and about getting older and finding a place for himself in the industry, and about the numerous rejections and auditions he still had to go through as he entered middle age. It showed that, even though he lived in LA, his life wasn't really that glamouros (part of the interview was in the back garden and it clearly was quite a modest home, albeit in probably a nice postcode). He came across really well, I thought, a genuine, likable guy with some self-awareness. And impossible not to sympathise with him.
Anyway, I'm pleased that he has now had a resurgence in his career and has probably found his level as an actor, i.e. middle-of-the-road crime/mystery dramas, as - you've guessed it - a generic handsome suave type.
As a sidenote, an interesting anecdote I heard from the horse's mouth recently. Matthew Rhys and Ioan went to the same Welsh medium school in Cardiff, Ioan must have been older than Matthew, because, as Matthew tells it, Ioan was the one who made him realise that you could apply to RADA if you were interested in drama. Ioan went first and Matthew basically followed him.
