Thought my contribution to this thread for this year was maybe over but Iā€™m off home to Australia next month, so sort of a holiday šŸ˜„ feel very lucky that Iā€™ve been able to get away to Paris, Madrid, Rhodes and Australia in one year - catching up on travels lost due to covid šŸ«¶šŸ¼

Iā€™m stopping in Perth first to see my cousin, but have never stepped foot outside of Perth airport so has anyone got any recommendations of things to see or do? I will only have a day or two there so will be fighting jet lag before flying east for the rest of my trip!

I flew to and from Stansted two weeks ago and had no problems at all, got through security and passport control within minutes but
Obviously it depends on timings, my flight from was at 6am and I landed back in Stansted at 10pm
Thank you, my flight would be at almost identical time so this is a lot of help actually! šŸ„°

I think itā€™s just one of those things youā€™re going to have to just chalk up to experience. For me, if Iā€™m reading something telling me I get a free flight change - and then Iā€™m being asked to make a payment- that would be a red flag to just stop the process and give them a call or whatever.
@Former_Antelopee did you get this sorted in the end???

Hi guys! My fiancĆ© and I are doing a little mini moon in the maldives for 5 nights šŸ™‚ we only decided to go because weā€™re having a destination wedding and the maldives is just a 5 hour flight from our wedding destination šŸ„° Iā€™ve never been before. Any tips? šŸ’—

If you're only going for 5 days, then preferably choose a resort with speedboat transfer - otherwise you could waste at least 1 day waiting for seaplane transfers ( which are not on a strict timetable but will depend on how many waiting from transfer to specific atoll/ island)
Theres a v good page on Facebook for Maldives Holidaymakers- lots of them have been multiple times to multiple islands!...or Trip Advisor Maldives forum has some very knowledgeable posters who can give advice
Depends on your budget too- some islands can be Ā£Ā£Ā£ per night and all inclusive in Maldives is not same as all inclusive in say the Caribbean ( often exceptions on where you can eat / what drinks are included)
There are several specialist Maldives tourist operators depending where you live and they can negotiate good deals - (Magic of Maldives, Simply Maldives) and also look at Travelbag website for a starting point- they often have good deals and are a v reputable company- Trailfinders also good
what facilities do you want?....spa/ underwater restaurant/ motorised water sports ( although not really in the spirit of the Maldives)
Do you want to go snorkelling from beach or is a house reef not important and you'd prefer a lagoon type island
do you want beach villa or water villa ( water villas can get v hot and if stormy can feel if you're on a boat)
What size of island ? ....some are tiny and can be walked around in 10 mins others have bikes supplied
Try and avoid an island too close to the main island of Male due to seaplane traffic and light pollution
some islands are adults only, but don't necessarily discount "family friendly islands" for a honeymoon as they can often have more facilities
We've just come back from our second visit to The Maldives and stayed at Kandolhu (although this is a seaplane transfer- I can highly recommend!- it's true barefoot luxury with only 30 villas on a tiny island!)
just a word of warning...once you've been once, you'll want to go again! ....wherever you choose I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

Thank you so much for your detailed reply! Weā€™ve gone for Meeru island and will be taking a private speedboat to the island, as our flight arrives at night šŸ™‚

Itā€™s a spa resort too, I think they have a dive centre but fiancĆ© and I arenā€™t big on diving or snorkelling. I read online our resort has quieter areas too, away from families, so I could request that. We booked through a travel agent and went with full board as well, so all our meals are included.

Iā€™ve heard that the currency over there is actually dollars? Should we take dollars with us? šŸ™‚
Also whatā€™s the ā€œdress codeā€ like? Iā€™m very much a dress and heels kind of girl, but not sure if thatā€™s what I should bring? A lot of reviews said you donā€™t even need shoes and can walk around barefoot?

thank you xx

Guys - looking ahead to 2023, im thinking an Italy trip. 10-12 days. Something like Rome, Florence (day trip to Pisa from here) and the Amalfi - anyone have any thoughts or tips?

I've done all those places as a solo traveller a few summers ago. I got around by train, it was really easy and v affordable.
I would stay in Naples and only do a day trip, or one night max. in Amalfi, just imo it's very overpriced and too touristy (v beautiful though). Plan things in advance, to save money etc (attractions, sights, travel).
Florence was the most expensive, I found.

Fabulous - this is exactly what i wanted to hear. I plan on travelling by train too. I drive enough in real life, am happy enough to avoid it on my holidays!
I am going to mention the trip to a friend, but will likely be going solo so glad to hear you enjoyed it!

I've been to Meeru. Great choice. Big enough island there's enough to do if the weather isn't great but still feels like a tropical island. Has a beautiful lagoon and well located. I loved it. You'll have a great time.

It's a barefoot island meaning the idea is you never need shoes. All the floors are sand. There is an adults only section of the island with it's own pool and restaurant. It's good you're not into snorkelling as there's no house reef but still plenty to see.

Dresses code isn't too dressy so no need to worry. Remember you are in a strict Muslim country so topless sunbathing and very skimpy bikinis are strictly forbidden.

Thank you so much! This is so reassuring. I didnā€™t know what to go for since itā€™s our first time going to the Maldives. Is there anything youā€™d recommend I do at Meeru? Or any tips in general? šŸ„°šŸ’—

Just back from Rome, one of my fave cities. Main recommendation would be to stay somewhere central, as we loved being able to walk everywhere. Also cross over the river into Trastavere for bars/restaurants. I travelled a bit around Tuscany by train a few years ago with a friend, it was super easy and the trains were pretty reasonably priced. From Pisa you can easily get the train to the Cinque Terre which is supposed to be fab, on my list for a future holiday for sure.

It's been many years since I've been so stuff may have changed. The main attraction is obviously the marine life but seeing as that's not your thing I'd say the spa and sports facilities should keep you occupied as well as maybe some boat trips. We liked to do our daily walk around the island. Felt like we discovered something new everyday.

It has a webcam here to get yourself excited by:

I only took 1 pair of flipflops this time (as sand and decking can get v hot!) but otherwise love walking barefoot most of the time
Take dollars for tipping staff - preferably new , lower denomination notes
No topless sunbathing and don't take any alcohol into country ( they scan cases on arrival / departure and confiscate it! )
I took several loose maxi dresses for wearing at night - it can be v humid! basically wore a bikini with loose cover up or shorts/ vest top to go for breakfast/ lunch !....factor 50 spf is a must!
I used Skin so soft as a mosquito deterrent- much nicer than Deet spray which smells awful! also got some brilliant citronella
impregnated leather bracelets to wear in evening when biting is peak!- even my husband wore one and didn't get bitten once!

Remember to fill in Imuga traveller declaration form no more than 96 hours before arrival in Male - it's v straightforward to do - screenshot the QR code you get ( also worth printing it out )
....and have a wonderful time!

Omg these tips are so so helpful! I wouldnā€™t have even thought of half of these things šŸ˜‚ Iā€™ve made a list of things youā€™ve mentioned to get and the form id need to fill out!

I think Iā€™d need to cut back on the evening dresses Iā€™m bringing and pack more casual clothes! Thank you so much šŸ„°šŸ’—

Has anyone been to Guernsey? Things to do there?
I went earlier this year as part of a cruise.

Things to do? Absolutely nothing šŸ¤£

It is tiny. Expensive. And if the weather isn't great it is thoroughly depressing.

I have been to Jersey and that is also expensive and miserable when grey, but has a lot more going on.

I'd recommend only bringing hand luggage for the trains. There isn't much room for big cases on the train and they often won't be close to you whereas small bags can go up above your seat.
