Have you ever known someone who went missing or was murdered?

I won't say who but a member of my immediate family was murdered. You never really think these things will happen to you/your family. You would've though things like this would bring a family closer but none of my other family members talk, I have felt let down by so called 'friends'.
Life works in mysterious ways.

I went to school with Dawn Sturgess, one of the victims of Novichok Poisonings in Salisbury. My brothers garage also had to be evacuated as he had had Sergei Skripals vehicle in his garage at the same time

I won’t name the person on here, but one of the sadly many police officers who are killed on duty, the person was incredibly dedicated to their job, a genuinely lovely human being. It still breaks my heart and their family is very close to mine.

I can't imagine how Salisbury must have felt during that time, and I'm sure the scars will still remain today. Scary stuff.

I grew up there but moved away when I was 21, but for my mum and dad and especially my brother as they still live in the area, it was a scary time. Some of the businesses along the little parade of shops never recovered from it. Just weird to think that I spent my childhood in school with her and her sister. I expect everyone has a loon at our now adult school friends and what they've done with their lives, but you don't expect something that was global news to happen to someone you went to school with

One of my lecturers from when I was at uni was recently murdered by her husband. He stabbed her in the neck, in apparent jealousy. It sent a shockwave of grief through all of her students, past and present. She was a truly lovely woman. Funny, an excellent lecturer, and always had a smile for everyone. A huge loss for the university, the students and, most sadly of all, her daughter.

Not sure if this counts, but two of my close family members lost several friends on 9/11.

That really was horrific. My cousin worked in one of the towers and should've been there but she quit the day before as she missed South Africa too much. Absolutely bloody lucky

My father went missing when I was six years old and was found a few days later dead in a hotel room. Autopsy didn't reveal much for a cause of death.

I've spent a long time trying to work out what could have happened and not found any closure. I've never met anyone else who had such a traumatic experience at such a young age and feel very alone in my thoughts and feelings about it. Just writing this down feels like a bit of a weight lifting off me!

Sorry you’ve been through this. Think having no answers is really hard. My friend died in suspicious circumstances as well. Were they able to determine the cause of death in terms of overdose etc? Sorry to be so blunt but if you had that it might be able to rule in or out probabilities x

Mine's a little different.

My late husband's uncle was executed in Texas. He first killed his own parents in the early 70s, and served 11 years before being paroled (the sentence was originally 30 years but he qualified for early release ... ), then was allowed to move to Texas where 5 years later he went on to shoot and kill his drug dealer and two of her friends. As if that wasn't enough he reloaded his shotgun, and shot the dealer's 4 year old daughter. He was tried and convicted of murdering the cop, and executed in 2000.

I mean ... yeah.

My ex husband's cousin went missing in the 90s and has never been found. It's quite a well known case and has been discussed on here before. His family's quite odd with lots of people not speaking to each other for decades so hopefully they are happier wherever they ended up!

Neither of which are mine but I found them interesting- one of them is abit dubious but the other is from a good close work friend so I believe it.

I’ll start with the dubious one
The start is a cliche my best friends uncles dog etc haha but;
My next door neighbours father was a contractor who worked for a firm specialising in fixing and maintaining drywall’s - they had a contract in the Manchester area and it was a Friday on a hot weekend - a team of 4 were promised job & knock that day and with it being hot he decided to start the work extra early and decided to start at 05:00am alone.

he’d worked for about 45 minutes and at around 05:45 a woman suddenly appeared and walked along a lane adjacent to the wall he was working on - he said he took note of her because (apart from the time) she seemed very well dressed & didn’t particularly fit in around that area. He said her hair was very distinctive & was only later he saw her on the news and recognised her straight away as Myra Hindley - he states it was odd as she didn’t seemed bothered about about been seen by him - even said hello, but he said she seemed really cold and had awful vibes off her. He did report it & the Police said they look into it and the area but never did.

the other,

my work friend visits his local pub often and befriended another man who’d Also made the pub his local - the man was actually quite popular in the pub and he was described as very charming and very likeable guy but was very cagey about talking about himself.

after a couple of years he suddenly stopped going to the local and seemingly disappeared- no one thought much of it… that’s until the Police paid the landlady a visit asking questions about said man.

it turned out the gentleman had been arrested for possessing underage images on his laptop. If that’s wasn’t bad enough, it emerged that the man he’d befriended and spent a lot of time with turned about to be Jon Venables. I’m sure he doesn’t need an explanation to who he is.

that fucked my friend up for quite sometime. I still don’t think he’s actually quite over it yet. Not 100% sure if I’m allowed to name the place where it was but it near Hemsworth, Barnsley way. That was a good few years back now. 2017/18 think

Oh my god, I would feel sick finding out I'd befriended that monster! I'm not surprised it messed your friend up!

Sorry to hear you went through something similar with a friend - you're right, it's the no answers and not knowing that's the hardest. Unfortunately no and 20 years and a cremation later there is no way we will know now.

I knew 4 boys who were murdered by another person I knew. We all lived in the same part of the city and it was a horrible time. The worst part was that the police initially didn't think these boys had been murdered and tried to pass off the deaths as drug taking gone wrong. They also didn't connect the 1st murder with the other 3 until 2000, and did not charge him until 2012.

It’s awful isn’t it.

That’s the thing with cremation isn’t it all the potential evidence is gone for advances in science that could help. I think the biggest thing is hoping they didn’t suffer. That’s my concern…in those final moments was there a sense of peace and acceptance. I sometimes have to cling to the hope their was.
