Sorry i know this is an old thread but I played the euro millions last night as they were making 100 millionaires via the euro raffle. Anyway, before I realised I hadn’t won I googled if I could retire on £1million at the age of 40…turns out £1million would generate £2500 interest a YEAR! All my dreams were shattered!

When my nana died, the very first thing one of my aunts and her daughters did, was race into the house to find her lottery tickets. When I heard that, I looked at them in a totally different way. Even now, all these years later, they carry on far too much about money - speculating at how much people earn, how they can afford what-not ... if I won big, I wouldn't tell a soul. I just couldn't trust anyone.

Wow!! I know they’re day to day way of life has obviously changed but, if have they as people? Meaning their attitudes?
Too be honest if I won that amount I’d actually be frightened! I wouldn’t tell anyone, other than close family, and I’d have to give at least half of it away to charities or good causes, just to make my life easier. If that makes sense!

*their not they’re 🤦🏼‍♀️
I would totally be the same - not tell a soul lol....people have a tendency to show up out of nowhere.
I've moved away from that town so I don't have more details on their attitudes....they were nice lovely people but money changes some for the worse when they've never had it......I hope this doesn't happen to them.

Never tell a soul ... honestly, even the most trustworthy of friends will either expect money from you, or blabber to others.

The best thing you can do is, meet with a financial advisor. Go to someone who knows what they're doing - someone who specifically mentions that they deal with lottery / inheritance amounts. If it takes time to find someone like that, then put the money on term deposit at the bank for six or 12 months. Don't put it in your everyday transaction account.

Hold off buying anything to begin with - sure, treat yourself with some new clothes or a night away somewhere - but be cautious about drawing attention to yourself.
You sound like you’re talking from experience... I’m Hocky, nice to meet you 😇 Need a new friend?

Some people only care about one thing. When my grandma died my auntie took all the jewellery and collectibles that weren’t listed in the will, whilst my mum requested her photo albums. My auntie was fine with that…sums it up! She didn’t even ask for any photos! (Which my mum would have happily shared)

I met a man who won the million first time he was in the Premium Bond draw. His neighbours told local press and they wouldn't leave him alone so he came to stay with our neighbours in Spain to get away from them.
A guy in my home village won the lottery and was a going to pay for a party at the local pub until he turned up and saw the hordes of people in the street, turned round and went home. Word had got out and people had come from all over the place. He ended up paying for a locals usual Saturday night out.
This is exactly the reason why I’d keep quiet! Leeches!!

Oh my - for 5 numbers I’d have thought at least £100k!! I can only imagine how gutted you felt! Still £1700 is better than a slap in the face but still…😱
That was exactly what I was thinking as well, honestly the £1700 was all spent towards bring a bridesmaid at my brothers wedding 🙄 I should have said no an just spent it on me 😂

What’s your take on online casinos? Do you think it is possible to make some money there? I’ve been playing some of them for the last couple of months, and I am +$2000 now.

Funny you should mention that! I found out last week that my brothers friends won £450,000 on a roulette online game. He won it 8 years ago and has nothing to show for it…it’s all gone. He didn’t even buy a house. I don’t think you’d ever get over wasting money like that!

My mum (lot of years ago) always put the same numbers on the lotto as her sister , they put it on themselves and one day the numbers came out it was around £120k , now you can imagine how much money that was 20 years ago ! So my mum rang my auntie her sister to tell her and my auntie that day hadn’t put the number on so my mum been my mum she gave half to her sister.. to then months later my auntie was renovating her house and my mum thought no way could you have holidays new car etc with the 60k she found out that my auntie HAD put the numbers on she kept the £120k PLUS the half my mum gave her!! How bad is that they never fell out or nothing either still very close now
Omg! That’s awful!! Your poor mum being taken advantage off like that, by her own sister!

A girl from my town won £8m! Another family from town won 10m but no one ever found out who from what I know! My mums boss was retiring and she bought him a lotto ticket for his card, bought herself one too, his ticket was over 6k on it! I would be sick! 😅😅 he brought her for a meal to pizza express loool
Whenever I have bought someone a lottery ticket, I’ve always chosen the same numbers for myself, so we would have to share the prize if they won, not that they would get to know who the other person was! 😂

I know someone who won £500k. She has never worked a day in her life and treats her children appallingly. She bought a house for £375k that needed alot of work. Never got the work done and spent the rest of scratch cards and gambling. Now she doesnt have 2 pennies to rub together and they are back in council accommodation.
Sounds like she needs a brain transplant.

I got 5 numbers on the lottery once, thought I was well into big money, was thinking I'd get money put into a house, yeah turned out 5 numbers got me £1700 😑😑 if I had had 31 instead of 30 I'd have landed 31 million, freaking one number out was the difference between 1700 hundred an 31 million 😭😭 plans for a house went out the window that day 😂

I did get 3 numbers on the Irish lottery though once, I pick 3 numbers an put a fiver on it an it got my £3500, so put it all into taking me an my folks to orlando for two weeks, I did need to add some more money but it paid the bulk of it, my mum does £1 on her 3 numbers an it's £700ish which is not bad
I have won about a thousand quid over the years doing the Irish lottery. Have not done it for ages though, as I live nowhere near a betting shop.

I was very close to winning 170 grand about 25 years ago. I had got four numbers, plus the bonus ball. But like you, I was one number out. If only I had put one of my old door numbers, I would have won it. Whilst not a massive fortune, it would have propped me up for a good few years.

My dad won about £100 way back when the lottery first started for matching 4 numbers. His other 2 numbers were each one out from the winning numbers, so they were 17 and 40 for example and the winners were 18 and 41. He said that was clearly as close as he was ever going to come, and never did another lottery ticket again 😂😂😂

I knew someone whose brother won about 2million, the guy I knew was a millionaire several times and the brother was the poor relation, but at least this evened the balance a bit!

There were also rumours that a local family had a lottery win, my kids went to school with theirs at the time and the family suddenly moved from their normal 3 bed semi to a big detached house in one of the best roads in the next town along from us (the house would have cost 1-2mil alone). They also started driving really flash cars, gave up their jobs and started their own business. They never said anything though.
I don't know if they've spent all their money now as one of the kids (now adult) was messaging mine last summer asking to borrow £250 (despite not having spoken to him for 5 years!) - my son said no :)

No but a few years ago I use one of them welcome bonuses on loads of bingo sites, all together spent £30 and must have won about 2000 over all the sites Within 2-3 weeks,
remember Once a family member saying they won the lottery and within minutes family he never spoke to were adding him on fb and all sorts. So if I ever won I’d not tell anyone

Years ago I started a new job, the woman I was replacing left because she won $7m.

A friend of mine used to work with a man who won €3m.

I rarely play the lottery but when I do I convince myself I'm going to win big 😂 I think about all the people I'd share it with, how I'd surprise them and how I'd spend it myself of course 😉
Wow, I'd be hoping by sitting on her chair it would bring me luck! (y)

I know someone who won a million but has unfortunately ended up a really nasty person. She used to shop in charity shops etc but the money has completely gone to her head and now she is horrible 🤷‍♀️

My Aunty lived about an 80 mile drive from my Grans and when she died she was there quicker than most of the other local family who were at work. She did the same, took what not in the will plus some that were then pleaded ingnorance. She even brought sacks with her to pack up the coal and loaded it into her car boot.
