Please believe that as many negative media articles there are, they have received huge push back from the general public. Every negative article has been inundated with positive posts standing up for the Princess. Read the comments to see what the public actually think. The majority of Americans are behind the Princess, as are Australians etc.

I'm reaching into conspiracy realm here, but as for why Charles doesn't do more to stop Harry... I think in addition to being a bit spineless, he feels guilty. I believe that Harry's problems are a fair bit worse than we have ever been told, and that the Firm did a lot to hide it with good PR. I think Harry likely has some longstanding intellectual and mental health problems which, behind closed doors, are much worse than the public know of.
The headmaster of Eton advised Diana not to send Harry there, because he was not clever enough to succeed and being in an academically-driven environment was going to make him miserable. But she sent him there anyway, and he only got 2 A-Levels - for anyone reading who isn't British, this means that he failed at least 2, because kids always take 4 A-levels and possibly more if they go to an elite school. He got a D in Geography and a B in art, which his art teacher claimed she had to do the work for him.
After that, he failed his exams to be in the military because his reading skills weren't good enough, and he failed multiple attempts to get his pilot license. But being a royal, the Firm got him shoved into the military anyhow.
Although the Firm's PR worked hard to keep his image as 'young lad who likes a drink', the truth is darker: Harry has been a known coke-head and heavy drinker since his late teens. The guy's a mess.
