So I have just learned from a third party that my non-binary daughter has legally changed (abbreviated) her name. Her name is a beloved family name and was her late Grandmothers (my mother’s) family name through generations. She has also removed her middle name which was gender neutral anyway. Deadnaming works both ways. I’ve just had to tell her Grandfather (my father). I have not spoken to her since she learnt of my approval of the SC ruling. I am in shock. How would you react to this?
Well I guess your daughter must be 16+ if she's legally changed her name which means that she can do this if she wants to. I don't know what to say really because I can fully understand your disappointment. I don't know about other legal implications but if you'd made a Will naming her using her old name that might be present a problem in the future, perhaps someone who works in the law could advise 🤔

I did mention this to my father, but she’s already had half of her inheritance from him. We’re both at the point of cutting her out of our lives. Since being involved in this cult she has become unbearable. The constant “I will not be misgendered” when we’ve slipped up with pronouns. I’m not wanting to now be shouted at for deadnaming her.

Wondering where this was filmed? It looks like a very middle class area, so probably full of be kind handmaidens... It doesn't tend to be the case in poorer more diverse neighborhoods
I found her stabby hand gestures rather confrontational which makes me think she may have a 'trans' child herself
It’s in Hebden bridge the guys you tube is edge of the matrix

I really feel for you. My daughter is on board with the cult (being kind, everyone is who they say they are...etc) but fortunately is happy being female and using her birth name. I honestly don't know how I would cope if she became a different person.

Perhaps the best thing to do (presuming she doesn't live at home) is to just ignore her for a while 😪 she'll get in touch when she wants something.

She’ll be in her 30’s soon. Lives 4 hours away. I can’t see her wanting anything. Hope losing her mother and Grandfather will help her validation as her new invented person. All her trans friends will be tell her we’re transphobic. Last time we spoke she offered to pay for me to have therapy! She has been telling my other daughter that I am a toxic mother and a narcissist.

I don't have any advice but I am so sorry you're going through this.

Is your other daughter on your side of the debate?

This is how cults work, alienating kids/gullible people from their family and friends. Like Scientology, members are encouraged to shun their families and friends who question their ideology. I just hope that the slackening we have seen in recent months, e.g. the less-in-your-face Pride parades this June compared to last year, and the fact that more people are vocally calling it out in media, etc, will eventually awaken your daughter. It might take time because of the sunk-cost fallacy where people feel ashamed of falling for something harmful like this, so they double down, but hopefully it will be a phase.

I'm so sorry to hear this, you must be devastated. I don't have children and sometimes for reasons like this I am very glad. A friend of ours has a son who is 19 and claims to be non binary but uses a female name and presents as male. It's a bleeping minefield. All we can wish is that society will come to its senses soon and this toxic, ridiculous bull will disappear into the oblivion it so deserves. Hopefully your daughter will come round soon.

People recommend loving detachment don’t they. You love them but you remove yourself from being their emotional punchbag or being rinsed for cash. I say people because I have not been in your position and when I had an estranged parent (who died still estranged) I practiced absolute detachment, mixed with some anger and then ‘duck you’ energy. (They were practicing absolute abandonment but I digress).
I think she will need you, she is only in her 20s and the trans friends are notoriously fickle - they are in fact the worst and at some point it will be her turn to be cancelled. Is up to you if you forgive at any point.

When she first came back as this, a few years ago, her other sister is 10 years younger. I’ve been making sure recently about my feelings on this. She is on my side, and saw the change in her sister as I did my daughter. I said at the time “It’s like she has joined a cult”. And agrees about men being in women’s spaces. I’m drip feeding her. She’d not really thought on it. She didn’t want to be called transphobic as she saw me called. She’ll side with me and her Grandpa - who she spent the day with.

It's much the same when people join these weird religious cults. They need to be deprogrammed when they leave. One day she'll realise how much she's hurt you and her grandfather but it might not be anytime soon 😪
One day she might wake up and realise that she's been taken in by an ideology and her friends aren't the wonderful people she thinks they are. She'll have to find out for herself that these people might not have her best interests at heart. They only want her to be a member of the cult to back up their own beliefs.

They advise parents of kids who've joined a religious cult to do everything you can to maintain a positive connection and if you’re able, send birthday cards, letters, and tokens of your love and affection. I'm not sure if I would do this though.

Perhaps you should take her up on the offer of free therapy! She'll be paying for it 😄
If she was my daughter I certainly wouldn't pay for anything else if she's abusive towards you.

Very difficult for you @knickerbocker glory, my heart goes out to you. I think some women feel they are being super cool and ever so openminded by going along with the trans bull. Unlike those of us who can see it for what it is.

Some day it will affect them, personally, and for many, that will be the first time they realise that it's not as simple as live and let live. Not when it comes to men stomping all over women's rights, into our spaces, and our sports. I do not wish harm on such women, but I hope that it comes as a short, sharp shock when it happens.

Her Grandfather is 90. Let’s hope it’s not too late. He thinks it’s disgusting as any decent good man does He’s a full blown Terf!

Indeed.

The therapy doesn't have to be "pro-trans". You are the client. You can ask for coping strategies and what to do when she comes to her senses.

Sadly you're not the only one suffering like this.
This article might help a tiny bit (but probably not much).

Can I just thank you all on this thread. You’re all truly intelligent, kind, empathetic and sane women and men. I don’t know what I would have done without this thread the last few years. You ARE my therapy! X

God I’m so sorry @knickerbocker glory. It must be so painful to see your child turn into a person you don’t recognise, and has been brainwashed to hate you.

Must be even worse to hear her saying things right out of the trans playbook. They all say the same things 😔

Really? Interesting. What are they told?
To go no contact with their parents, and any other family member who doesn’t completely affirm them in every way. To instead embrace their new “found family” of fellow cult members. To be angry all the time at all the injustices and micro aggressions they experience every day as a queer person (like being misgendered, or deadnamed). To revel in the drama they’ve created.
