I think most of us here probably are fairly liberal, generally. Most of us at some point were fairly 'live and let live' and then a moment or few moments/videos/experiences etc made us begin to question 'gender ideology', a lot of us are parents and I myself saw first hand my clearly a girl stepkid become 'nonbinary', 'gender fluid' etc etc and now insists she's a boy despite still often appearing very feminine etc, talks about getting a double mastectomy like it's nothing. Proclaims loudly self ID not being made law is killing people, believes trans people are experiencing an 'active genocide' despite no evidence to support this. She's legally still a child and yet had zero signs of anything as a young child...right up until a young teen was perfectly happy as a girl. Then I found out there are thousands of teenage girls doing the same thing. I found out the statistics of teens referred to gender clinics in the past few years is astronomical compared to a decade or two ago and now is skewed incredibly to more girls whereas it used to be far less but more boys than girls. I found out about the Tavistock and why they were being shut down, how teens are being prescribed cross sex hormones after one very short doctor's visit.

And I couldn't pretend anymore. Id tried to be supportive but I was horrified. I'm not old, I'm 31...but I can't pretend that I believe men can be women, and vice versa, I can't believe the social contagion theory isn't true when I've witnessed it in action.

My posting here doesn't come from a want to be any kind of bigot. It comes from a worried parent and as someone who has faced too much male violence in my life to turn a blind eye to men with fetishes wanting to share a bathroom with my 10 year old daughter. I'm scared for my stepkid but fuck, I'm terrified for her.

I have a wonderful friend who is a 'TERF'...not sure if she'd be OK with being described as such or not.

She is a much older lady and a brilliant person and, interestingly, the topic of gender didn't come up until quite far into our friendship.

It came up because she said her and her daughter only disagree on one topic...this one. And it turns out her daughter and I have similar views on it. She firmly believes that trans women shouldn't be in women-only spaces, along with some of the other points that some of you have made relating to women's rights and taking back what women have fought hard for.

I was surprised by her views because she is Liberal and wise and open minded and I didn't expect her to have these beliefs. But I don't know what she's been through in her life and I guess I am naive to think that anyone who thinks differently to me on this is closed minded and judgemental.

She and I don't broach the topic of gender as we know it will only leave one or both of us upset. I'm hearing some interesting insights from you all so thank you. While I don't think my views will dramatically change I do still think there is a lot for me to learn and to always remember to remain open minded and respectful when hearing someone else's views and experiences.

Conflating gender critical (TERF) views with right-wing politics is a common tactic used by trans activists. I'm happy to be called a TERF. I am (and have always been) a left wing liberal. The issues surrounding trans - and it's transwomen - is that of safety, dignity and privacy for women and girls in their daily lives. Do you want a teenage girl to share a changing room with a middle-aged man, should Muslim women have to restrict their activities because a transwoman is using the women only gym/swimming pool. Should women who have suffered male violence have to endure fear in changing rooms and toilets because of some men. It only takes one man to make a female only space a unisex space and remove all safeguards.

On a fundamental level it's weird to me that we have these strict binaries - male or female. I've often wondered, and will probably get laughed at for this, why when we're born we can't be non-binary (sorry to use this label again but for lack of a better word) and then decide to be who we want to be without fear of judgement.

How about we let kids be gender non-conforming without telling them it makes them non-binary or transgender?

Surely THAT is more progressive than the current thinking?

You seem to be painting non-binary as this modern, free-thinking, unrestricted way to live. In my opinion it’s worse and more regressive than simply accepting a feminine boy and a masculine girl (or old school tomboy) for who they are.

Secondly, Mae has no control over how others perceived them, nor should they care. Maybe get annoyed about things that actually concern you?

There is a separate thread for the Brianna Ghey murder trial so I won’t go into the detail here but having seen the outrage today that the defendants are not being charged with hate crime, it brings me back to my own outrage that despite the sheer volume of violent crimes against women and girls being committed day in and day out, men will never be charged with ‘hate crime’ against women.

Because there is no additional protection in law for females on the receiving end of hate based on their sex as there are for trans identified people based on their identity.

I hate that I have to say this, but I’m glad the truth of the murder is now coming out and people might eventually stop using this teen’s death to perpetuate myths about how vulnerable trans people are out in society.

1. It is the question of the rights of women and girls / children to have single sex spaces for safety, dignity and fairness. When TiMs want to use women’s bathrooms, changing rooms, swimming sessions, awards categories and sports to either a) validate their fetish b) access women because they are predators or c) take places and prize money they would not get as a man, they are violating the hard won rights of women.

2. It is teaching a whole generation that a legal fiction is reality, you can change sex. You can’t. And you don’t have a real gender to change, you only have behaviour that is socially viewed in certain ways. Logically and biologically it is nonsense. The ones being harmed here are mentally ill young people being put on a pathway to sterilisation, loss of sexual function, rejection and given no actual help for their illness.

3. Misogynists, especially on the left, have a new way of attacking women and trying to silence them. They are using trans ideology to attach women, especially those who are older and don’t put up with their shit. See Owen Jones. Be kind! Is the new ‘be seen and not heard’. Left wing women who are enabling this are an enigma to me, they have no idea how much some of these men hate women. Well we're sort of having a discussion, aren't we...? My original post was about not getting the hate for Caster Semenya. That was me engaging after reading posts about her. Engagement doesn't have to = total agreement with the line of posts on a thread.
'Objective reality' is an interesting one because, as I understand you, you mean objective reality as you interpret it? Whereas, as it's such a divisive topic, I take it to mean your subjective stance on this.
But it's very interesting to glance into a thread I don't normally visit, seeing the different responses. I get the passion and righteousness behind it, I just don't agree with you on a lot of it. That doesn't make us enemies but it does mean we're unlikely to agree on an anonymous forum.

We are now, yes… I think people have mostly been generous to Caster and understanding of the fact Caster’s health condition causes issues. The word you quoted was one word extracted without the two words following, which made it seem worse than it was.

The objective reality here is that Caster is a man, and how kind do we (or any women) need to be about ignoring this before we are kind enough? I don’t like to see a discussion about international competitive sport policed with “women aren’t being nice!”, personally. How nice is it to take a woman’s medal from her when you’re a man? I mean, really?

I think it would have been best if a lack of kindness in favour of some scientific and rules-based rigour, and some recognition of Caster’s biological sex, had set in earlier. It would certainly be fairer.
