This responsible Disclaimer warning advice below was added at beginning of Podcast, now up 40 mins long. Some are too quick to judge looking for anything to criticise - notion that all casual life chats not giving advice just his story, must always be formal public service announcements adhering to all protocols is unnatural, life isn’t perfect & stops open sharing of real struggles without fear of attack/ online abuse, dog with a bone mentality. Nobody is going to interrupt any of this full podcast chat as must ignore your own doctor’s advice. Original Clip is still up on her Instagram no dirty delete.

“Presenter, rugby player and Love Island winner, Greg O'Shea is my guest on today's show.
Trigger warning: I am so grateful to Greg for his honesty in our chat. I truly believe what he has to say about asking for help when he encountered his own mental health struggles will be massively helpful to many people, particularly men, but it is important to note this conversation involves discussion about suicidal feelings. Greg's story is his own. But a note as well that any changes to prescribed medication should be done under medical supervision. For any advice or help the HSE have a full list of mental health services and supports on their website.”

As much as Doireann is annoying on the Radio, her podcast interviews do often cover serious topic’s in a casual chatty way like her last one about Roz Purcell’s eating disorder. Celebrities can genuinely have real life struggles without it being fabricated lies for fake headline publicity - expectations that their lives are perfect & worry free as if not humans adds to their problems.

Sorry for this a very long comment, don’t bother to post on this thread before but I’m shocked that an open confession to feeling suicidal & getting urgent help is automatically accused of being a fake pr gimmick for publicity & loads of criticism of one personal story for not being explained in perfect medical protocol when he’s still fragile, no matter if not a fan of them or not is v. harsh. Plenty of celebs on here to lambast for their truly terrible behaviour but this isn’t the topic to attack so severely. As a man who’s had similar troubles can relate to him, when feeling better not wanting to rely on pills, the instant bravo decision of the very scary task of finally stopping is rarely perfect protocol. Missing the point of him sharing his own story, normalises talking about life struggles & it will help others especially young men by being so open on not an easy topic to make public. Hope people don’t send Greg any more online abuse or direct critical DMs for being so honest in this podcast - none of us are perfect or word everything correctly always + remember still a recent bad dark time for him. Please go easy as it can be harmful.

This full podcast is released on Monday - usually about 40mins conversations so these clips just a very edited trailer. It’s easy to be cynical about all celebs & judge too quickly as this is Tattle. Must remember already been 3 suicides linked to Love Island, tragically it’s very real. Greg’s mental health story isn’t an excuse for any bad behaviour like some celebs do to hide behind it for PR spin plus he’s now busy with Rugby presenting & other work so not desperate for column inches to lie about suicidal thoughts - he has nothing to gain from it. People not believing or dismissing mental health issues as attention seeking lies is why many young men find it so hard to talk & get help - suicide is the biggest killer of young men. Can tell from these clips, it’s a honest & vulnerable frank chat, that will help others to realise it’s okay not to be okay, talk & get medical help - nothing to be ashamed of. Shows it can be a temporary dark period, get help & move forward, life can get better.

Presume likely trigger warning & disclaimer about stopping medication, emergency helplines will be added on full podcast info - it’s only one personal experience being told not any official medical advice. Greg wrote on his Instagram stories that this is just his story & everyone has their own. You never know what somebody is going through so just look out for each other. Agree sudden cold turkey off any strong medication isn’t recommended & can be dangerous - a v risky gamble but not everyone experiences the same side effects or severe withdraw symptoms - some are fortunate & do not to suffer. Long term dependency withdraw will likely to be far worse. Every medical detail isn’t going be revealed in a edited podcast chat just a synopsis. Greg’s educated, most likely had already reduced his dosage down with medical guidance prior to final impulse wanting to stop & binning them on his Birthday at end of March. Many others have done the same impulse for decades on a milestone date to make a fresh start, decision they chose only for themselves.

People can look successful & happy on social media but reality going on in their lives can very different. Being close to their mom, sisters & friends doesn’t stop anxiety & depressive bad periods in their life happening, quickly spiralling unable to talk. So in fairness he’s not making it up for this interview with Doireann, Greg has spoken many times before about his struggle after retiring from Rugby at end of last year, difficulties transitioning away from pro sports & his girlfriend of 2 yrs dumping him all at the same time, in numerous interviews since last year & saying he had to get professional help. Could see physically he got thin & looked unwell end of last year. Many pro sportsman / Olympians often suffer from deep depression after retiring as they try to create a new career & life for themselves away from sports - daily training, lifestyle & their identity since childhood stopping suddenly. Feeling lost, uncertain about the future & who they are is common.

Sometimes even basic advice or a saying like “no one gives a duck about you” which is more about stop worrying what others think about you & external pressures, got to make your own opportunities & do what makes you happy, can help someone when feeling overwhelmed with anxiety - if it resonates with them alone all that matters. Said before his law exams are his back up career felt oblige to do but it made him miserable.

He’s obviously not a bad guy, running the London Marathon next week for Alzheimer’s research in memory of his Grandma who died from it & raise over €10K but some here will still say he’s also only doing that for attention. Glad he’s feeling better now & got help as it’s not easy to do or admit.

Back to Doireann, her dog & the rest of the Gardashians. 😂
Thanks for explaining that celebs can have issues too and for your lengthy update on Greg. I think we all wish him well with his mental health however his advice was wrong and dangerous and the story about the quote saving the day was unrealistic. If he & Doireann want to use their platforms for good then they need to do their research & give responsible advice only.

“Some are quick to judge”… I was first to comment on this. I wouldn’t say I was judging but I was shocked and disappointed in Doireann’s complete disregard for those who may be listening and going through similar to what Greg reports.

People with mental health issues are vulnerable and can be impressionable. Greg himself says it took months of treatment and a significant dose of medication which was then doubled, to get him well. In the next breath he claims a quote from the very person who is interviewing him turned his life around and he simply threw his medication in the bin and got his life back on track.

If you can’t see why we are concerned, that’s on you. Many of us have reported having family members with MH issues or going through it ourselves. Many posters have shared their own experiences coming off medication. This is not coming from ppl who just want judge and critics. We are people who have lived through mental health in some capacity and understand the importance of working with medical professionals to get the right advice, medication, therapies etc to get well again. Many people suffering with poor mental health could have seen that video clip over the weekend and could have interpreted that binning the medication was the catalyst that turned Greg’s life around. How many do you think can stop taking their medication overnight with zero side effects.

Doireann adding a disclaimer to her podcast is too little too late in my opinion. She had that clip up all weekend despite many many direct messages, tik tok comments and Instagram comments asking her to be more responsible and take it down, add a disclaimer, share helplines etc. Even the disclaimer you shared from her podcast is lazy at best. In the time it took to direct ppl to the HSE website, she could have shared a helpline number. In my opinion she should have cut out that who section. But she wanted a headline for her podcast. I only wish she got one saying how irresponsible she is as a broadcaster.

Haven't listened either but there's nothing like that in the clip. He said I just stopped taking them of my own accord and threw them in the bin
Which is the worst thing he could've done. You need to wean yourself off them slowly especially if he was on such a high dose. Listening first I thought fair play to him for speaking about it as its still such a stigma but then ruined it by throwing them in the bin. This will not work.

Fantastic post @fortycoats. Both Doireann and Greg spoke about a serious issue in a rather flippant manner which could potentially have detrimental effects to someone in a vulnerable position.

How Doireanns alleged advice ‘no body gives a f**k about you’ can be construed as constructive is beyond me.

Doireann should stick to acting the fool on the radio and leave serious broadcasting to the professionals, like Miriam O’C or Pat K or Claire B etc…

I’m on a high dose antidepressant and have been for more then half my life and probably will be for the rest of it. With clinical depression and severe anxiety life can be cruel and very hard. Only for this medication I know I wouldn’t be here today. However I have to add to this about the clip mentioning cold Turkey. Once I did this. I was on a particular antidepressant I’m now no longer on. I thought I didn’t need it anymore. So I stopped. This was about 15 years ago and even now thinking about when the withdrawals hit I get upset. I’ll never ever forget that night when I really thought I was losing my mind. I was adamant that I had to die. I just kept saying over and over ‘this is terrible I have to die’. That’s just what happened to me. Thankfully I was taken to the my GP by my mom and got the help I needed. But I have never ever done it again and never ever will. As said here having a public profile like they do they do have a level of responsibility to the public and absolutely should have said that it’s not recommended to do what he did. I’m glad it worked for him and he’s ok but sadly so many have done that and it wasn’t as good an outcome.

At what point did they say they were dispensing advice to people?

Ah come off it, at some point people will have to take responsibility for their own behaviour.
I agree fully that coming off the medication without GP supervision isn’t what should be done. But he wasn’t sending subliminal messaging under the guise of being an influencer, he was telling his story.

People here “not buying it” is far more dangerous than anything he said.

He wouldn’t have been on there telling his story at all if he wasn’t an influencer. He’s promoting himself.

If only one person does as he did and throws out their medication as a result of Greg’s experience, and it goes awry for them then that’s one person too many. Greg did what he did and apparently it worked out well for him but it was irresponsible of them to broadcast it. People struggling with their mental health can be very impressionable and you’ll do anything to feel better. I wouldn’t like to think of anyone doing what he did, it’s can be disastrous. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to state that.

Just listening now and this is only a small part of the whole podcast. He is a pretty interesting character, seems like a fairly nice guy although he did say he told the rugby crowd his granny was sick to get away on love Island, then she did get sick and pass away. Overall he seems like an innocent enough lad who likes his family and his sport. Gets on well with Doireann. Didn't watch LI so realise the fallout from him dissing all the LI promo, not staying with the girl etc.
Id say he did have his mental health issues but maybe not as dramatic as it comes across in the promo video

These people are called ‘influencers’ for a reason and unfortunately, it’s very often the case that the people who are the most easily influenced are also the most vulnerable.

What’s worse is the other so called influencers that are congratulating him, some of them medical professionals. It beggars belief.

This is the same Greg O’Shea that was filmed riding away in a bathroom stall after going on Love Island. His online image has been expertly curated since, but the lads lad is still there behind it all. I don’t buy his act for a second- he wants fame and is far too sweet to be wholesome.

The mental health card is a convenient tool for influencers to grow their following. It’s been done by many in the past and will continue to do so. They will cash in on absolutely anything. If it helps someone, great. But as has been pointed out here, it’s careless content, disregarding the seriousness of the implications of using/ coming off of medication.

I get the impression he’s trying to create a persona as the next Bressie. He probably saw how opening up about his mental health struggles really skyrocketed his image and he now gives talks all over the country and I believe gets paid a fortune for doing so.

Bressie was the first to do this from what I remember. And they have all followed suit. . .
