Someone correct me if I am wrong, but when they moved didn't Fleur talk about in a way to imply that someone in the family wasn't well and they had to move to like 'help out'? Everything seemed quite rushed as if something had happened and all of a sudden they had to move.

It's odd they "made" Mike move in though as surely the inheritance will be split between him and his siblings. Although I think one sister lived there for a while.
They could have made any of the kids move in-I'm guessing they chose Mike since he's the one taking over the family business. It's to avoid having to pay tax on the hall, so it's actually ensuring that they get more inheritance. I would imagine since Mike already has the hall, it means in his parents' wills that his sisters get more money than he does.
(For reference, I don't agree with doing this since I think people should just pay their tax like us regular folk, but it's a well known thing to do in those better off circles)

I think that was more speculation on gossip sites, because that would then make sense of the rushed move, like you said.

Their "forever home" was huge too (she also used to hide parts of it and especially the garden/lake area), but it was lovely and seemed very homely. I don't know much about what the hall looks like since I hadn't watched since River's birth but the garden/park looks wonderful and I like the kitchen.

I think I prefer the hall. I’m left politically but I don’t know how I feel about inheritance tax, like I guess they’re millionaires so maybe they should just pay it but anyone who has assets worth over 350k has to do I don’t think it should unreasonable to try to avoid it lol, like for many people it’s not their fault house prices have risen so much for example. Plus woodland/land is exempt from it which is the bigger issue here.

I actually don’t know why I like Fleur when she and mike probably vote Tory

I find your comment so interesting, would you take an instant dislike to someone who doesn’t share the same political views as you do? I vote very differently to my best friend and while we have some healthy discussions around politics, I don’t think it’s fair to immediately dislike someone for it. That seems very closed minded to me.

Same. I’m torn with inheritance tax. For most ‘normal’ people, any inheritance is money say a parent has earned, and paid tax on already. Same with someone selling a larger house to downsize but having to pay capital gains tax.

People often say that but with what the conservatives have become it is less nuanced. People have lost their lives due to the tory party policies, social mobility is worse than ever, and all our data is being sold to American venture capitalists so actually no I wouldn't be friends with a Tory. Not to mention Brexit and the inexcusable handling of the pandemic.

Of course I will dislike someone for having political opinions that betray all of my personal morals.

Lol at angry react
I don’t think I’d categorically stop being friends with or not befriend a person because they were a Tory but I would certainly want to know their reasoning for voting the way they do.

Personally I'm not friends with Tories full stop, they're not in my circle. If I became friends with someone through work/house circles and they transpired to be a tory I would keep them at a distance but still be amicable.

I'm actually reasonably posh myself, I don't resent posh people or wealth and that's why I like Fleur, she has every right to live her life. But I would be very pleasantly surprised if her and Mike were villing to vote with the common person in mind, and for me that's a real shame.

This just seems like common sense to me but I'm working class and Scottish so I guess I've been told from birth that you don't vote Tory and you don't make friends with people who do...

Either way, I don't think liking their personality is a bad thing, especially when they don't actively express their political leanings. Even if we know they probably do vote Tory, I can still appreciate that I think Fleur is a nice enough woman and a good mum and I like her content. There's a difference to me between investing into a friendship with someone who doesn't have the same morals or political beliefs as me, and consuming content of someone who probably votes differently but doesn't ever mention their views.

All, let's move on from this and not get into an offtopic argument that spoils the thread :)

I feel like at the time she had mentioned a member of Mikes family being unwell and thats what led to the speculation about them moving in to look after them, however i dont remember a death being mentiomed so i thought it might have been that they were always going to inherit the hall after whoever was living there passed and that person became unwell unexpectedly sooner and moved out into somewhere more manageable/into a care home and it sped the process up and some tax thing meant they had to live there rather than sell it.

Wow... this thread! No comment.

I think it is a testament to Fleur's credibility that she didn't feign crazy overt excitement about the move to the Hall, although I'm struggling to find a timeline of when that happened to judge past reactions. I actually just searched something about her house move on google and the listing of her old house came up, that's crazy.

Agreed it’s preferable to her being fake & maybe understandable when you live in a world of mega mansions. Although if anyone wants to give me a hall I’m ok with that!

Also from looking at the last place again it is so much nicer... Older with more character... and so much room for activities!

Older than the hall? I’d assume the hall is fairly old. I think the last place had a better flow to it. The sitting room, kitchen & conservatory were all linked. The also had a good room, plus an airy garden room for her office & a lot of random rooms for dogs etc. Plus I think it had a lake.

Yeah I don't think the old place had more character than the hall but it just felt more like a home and more 'them'. The hall feels like they're staying in a fancy hotel rather than living in their own house.

According to Wikipedia, the Hall is from 1820, and is set on 120 acres. It has a working farm on the grounds, so those are the sheep that River likes to go and see. Whenever you see them walking their dogs, it's on their own land. They take the car sometimes, and sometimes they'll have picnics in what looks like a park, but it's actually their garden. It was listed to be £4m+ , so they're not doing too bad, even if it is a family property.

sorry poor wording I actually meant revisiting the last place virtually secured my opinion that the new hall is much nicer exactly because it is older

Can someone please message me the name of the Hall? I feel left out, I want to read about it 🤣
