Everyone and their dog are selling brownies and blondies these days. It's actually really disheartening because I've always wanted my own baking business but it seems so faddish now with everyone jumping on the bandwagon. Most of them don't even offer anything unique either, just nicking eachother's recipies and baking the same bogstandard tat covered in more sugar. Like christ atleast have some originality, how many biscoff/kinder/nutella/jammie dodger traybakes does anyone need!?Wholesalers can often have minimum order amounts so if you’re operating out of your kitchen, it can be cheaper picking up stuff on special in your local supermarket or Costco. Especially since the likes of Cadburys and Nestle will not sell for cost price and coffee chains have cornered the sugar wholesalers.
I have seen a lot of recipe books since the 70’s and instagram bakers are not reinventing the wheel - it’s a bit naive to assume “secret recipes” are key to a business when they can easily be obtained and recreated with little effort by someone who knows what they are doing. It always seemed like instagram just made it seem you were supporting a local business and not buying factory made stuff, and that the decorations would be far more appealing and unique.
Essentially, it’s like you’re buying treats off one of your mates AND at the same skill and hygiene levels too - let that sink in...
I've had my own baking business for 6 years now and I agree, when I started business was amazing and now I've lost count of how many people do it around my area, during lockdown everyone seemed to be doing it. The bad thing is, is that most of them don't follow guidelines and haven't been inspected and sell cheaper than me especially celebration cakes.Everyone and their dog are selling brownies and blondies these days. Agreed! I’ve been doing “Hobby baking” for about 7 years now, I have a page but mainly just to archive my pictures (not a huge amount of followers) and don’t generally advertise, just tends to be baking for Friends and Family which I’m happy with but it’s really disheartening to see people make brownies and blondies and then creating business pages to sell them having never done it before and thinking it’s as easy as thatEveryone and their dog are selling brownies and blondies these days. There has been an explosion of people baking and selling cakes this last year. I’m really careful about who and where I buy from, and usually go for someone who’s been doing it longer, has the necessary hygiene and insurance and has good reviews along with a big collection of photos. Please don’t give up your business, I’m sure those who started up for a quick buck will soon stop.I've had my own baking business for 6 years now and I agree, when I started business was amazing and now I've lost count of how many people do it around my area, during lockdown everyone seemed to be doing it. I wondered if Jane was bringing out a book for people who don’t like/can’t print out her recipes and prefer not to use a tablet. I must admit I’m a sucker for a recipe book, can’t bear to keep touching my phone with dirty hands!I’m really interested to see what’s going to be in the book because they seemed to have created loads of new recipes just for the book which seems to defeat the object...is it going to just be stuff like ‘use melted spread for a drip’ and ‘the same buttercream recipe the rest of the world uses’, surely they’re not going to give away the actual recipes they use for their business? Jane’s Patisserie also has a book coming out and as much as I love her recipes I’m wondering the same, will it just be the same old stuff bound in a pretty book
Very true, same for me I will still buy it because I love her recipes but I do hope it’s not only all the ones on her site, some new ones would be fab!I wondered if Jane was bringing out a book for people who don’t like/can’t print out her recipes and prefer not to use a tablet. I’ve got janes book on preorder! I’m glad she’s doing one, she deserves itJane is so lovely! She’s always friendly and helpful if you reach out to her or comment on her Instagram. I’m sure her book will be a better success. She has such a huge variation of recipes to warrant publishing a book.
I made her mini egg NYC cookies at the weekend, if you haven’t already, then make them! AmazingVery true, same for me I will still buy it because I love her recipes but I do hope it’s not only all the ones on her site, some new ones would be fab!
