Eve Cornwell #2 Sacked off the law, what exactly does she even do anymore?

New Thread!

Last thread spanned a very long time, so quick recap: Eve graduated her law degree, started a training contract at a magic circle firm, stopped making YouTube content, left her law job for a tech job and is now a WoMaN iN tEcH.

She also quietly shut down her merch line (Millennial Coffee Co) after announcing she was going to sell actual coffee. Not long after this she came out while flaunting mask wearing rules all over London under Covid-19.

Disappointed my title suggestion didn't get used here 😟. I've never had one win before lol. Is there a reason for that as it got about 15 likes as far as I can remember which was the most of the suggestions.

I looked through quite a few pages of top liked posts but couldn't find any title suggestions!
My suggestion was on page 50 so quite recent. There was also a number of suggestions from somebody on the very last page to be fair. Can the title be edited or is that it now?

I'll be up to the mods, if you want you can report the thread to get it edited
No idea how to even do that, never mind. I suppose I could have created the new thread myself but I didn't want to be that person that congratulates themselves on naming the new thread 🤣

So I watched the new video and as a professional program manager/strategic specialist in a large company, I have several comments. I'm going to list them because I have ADHD and big paragraphs hurt my brain.
  • To start, a lot of these youtubers act like they have discovered professional working strategies. In reality, it's giving Columbus "discovering" America.
  • Eve needs to buy an iron, a steamer, a hot coal press. SOMETHING to get these wrinkly ass clothes sorted.
  • The back to back morning meetings is a choice 😬 I am confused at whether she is supervising the tech teams or assisting them? If she is their supervisor with such minimal knowledge then yikes.
  • She had to learn what software development was from her coworkers??? Did she not bother to even do some minimal research. I am appalled.
  • The way she talks to people in meetings is odd. It seems like she's almost nervous but at the same time wants to be likeable. Like she doesn't believe 100% in what she's asking for or is scare to ask.
All in all, the video wasn't super interesting as someone with a somewhat similar job. I will say it is realistic have days when you're just in meetings all day. Showing a bit more of her day or how it's different to work from home would have been a nice break from all the meetings.

It was kind of dumb of her to have a whole segment on shallow vs deep work and how she's trying to do more deep work, only to show her having meetings all day. Still, this is one of her better recent videos.

Is there something awfully wrong with Windows laptops/computers that I’m not aware of? Or like… is it just not aesthetic enough?

I agree with you. She seems kind of insecure with this new role overall but I can understand her. She doesn't have any background in tech so it can be a little overwhelming. She probably should've tried to learn a little bit before changing into this field. There are so many resources online, like FreeCodeCamp which is very friendly to beginners and gives a good overall of the most common languages.
I think that she's very communicative but perhaps project manager for someone with basically 0 sense of what all the developers are talking about it's not the best job for her in tech. I think she would be great in hr (but it's not as ✨creative✨ i know).
Another thing she seemed really excited while talking about the ux designers. Perhaps she could start trying to learn something about it. She always seemed to enjoy editing videos and design soem stuff. Who knows if she doesn't change her career again in the future?

Having worked as a product manager in the past (also non-tech background), I could totally relate to how I felt 6 months in the job. You still learn the ropes, try to be useful and hide the confusion/insecurity behind glorified buzzwords and make yourself busy with back to back meetings, boards and all the other fluff.
Good product managers are gatekeepers for the dev teams and internal/external stakeholders, ensuring that devs and designers can focus on their work and prevent distractions. Eve on the other hand seemed more concerned with making herself look very important.

It's just that. She just wants to be able to take a MacBook to a coffee shop to look like every other young start-up employee she's seen online. All the cool influencers and Gen-Z kids have Apple products, so she's disappointed she didn't get one.

Funny how she moans about having the same Windows Lenovo laptop as half the office workers in London when what she really wants is a MacBook which is even more commonplace.

Am I the only one thinking she is playing her audience? She basically still works for the sam law firm just in a daughter company/ projects that serves to manage legal contracts.... She has not quit her sweet magic circe environment and has not cut ties with law. It really is an overstretch. CreateiQ is a contract management platform created by Linklaters.

I'm also confused, but she's probably in direct contact with developers because it's a startup. In larger companies there's a few levels of engineers managing engineers before you get to a more manager type person.

Also petty sidenote, but it annoys me when she's all like Women in STEM. you don't get to say that unless you've spent one too many nights crying over calculus. (jokes i'm not gatekeeping).

Product manager is NOT a people manager. Devs do not report to the PM, it's a functional role to facilitate the internal and external communication.

Also the only webpage for her new workplace is the Linklaters one. So she basically works for the same law firm just not as a solicitor. She makes it look like she started from scratch on the job market looking for employment in unfamiliar area.

Also not working as a solicitor gives her way more freedom to collaborate with brands aka advertising products in her videos.

ibz mo just posted on YT an update on his current situation regarding his law degree. within the first 3 minutes he gives very interesting opinions:
the contrast between oxbridge+corporate law in comparison to the community he was raised in
how important is to consider different areas of law not just corporate due to their high salaries
why we should support public law. he even attached an article on why barristers are striking in the UK

i found these very insightful (i swear i'm not ibz lmao)
being said this, maybe it's a bit off topic, but i've never seen eve discuss these sort of things. from the very beginning of her undergraduate degree in bristol she was into corporate law. i remember she made a Q&A years and years ago, (i remember she was wearing some sort of google logo pun on her t-shirt) where someone asked why are you into corporate law? and i remember she replied something very vague, like she enjoyed business very much and dealing with clients and companies and stuff like that (like, why do not just study economics or business administration?)

also, ibz doesn't even mention what firm offered him a contract, because he hasn't started working there yet and wants to still use YT as an unbiased platform, independent from his employer, whereas eve....well, she has hyped linklaters a lot, she even made that video showing the headquarters and interviewing staff there, -and now acts like she's working for some completely unrelated company to linklaters- which makes me think about what were her real interests for pursuing a career in corporate law

EDIT: re-writed some sentences that were confuse srry

It might be different at other universities, but the top ones definitely have a lot of focus on corporate law and networking within corporate law - I can’t really explain it but even without taking corporate modules that still seems to be rampant. Same goes for legal websites that offer networking events

Obviously uni societies are great to expand into other areas but the opportunities given seem a lot more limited imo 🤷🏼‍♀️ Though again, could be very different in other unis

Honestly I could see how easy it would be to just go down the corporate route when/if that seems to be the only thing your uni is really pushing and you’ve gone into a law degree mostly because it appealed to your interest rather than knowing that you want to go into x/y field

Corporate lawyers make a LOT of money . They get cuts out of the settlements they win/fines they can get dismissed for their employers/clients.

so yeah , you don’t get as many perks when you’re an environmental lawyer ( Mitch from Modern family ) cause you’ll be probably working for a non-profit or representing people with little money

I haven't watched a lot of her old videos but in her new ones it constantly sounds like she's doing a really bad job of trying to hide a natural regional accent from the north of England (Yorkshire maybe?) with a fake posh one. It just sounds muddled as hell.

I don't know where she's from originally, but I'm guessing fewer videos has meant less practice with her fake accent and she's getting rusty.
