I must say I'm very dissapointed with Elena and her turn to speaking only German. I've been following her since she started and supported all her media outlets and right now I don't understand anything. I don't understand why she doesn't want to put english translation below the german words. I can't help but think that somehow her bf influenced this switch, maybe it's a big coincidence but maybe not. Her yt channel is also very quiet.

I lost track when she suddenly stopped posting content in English and switched to German content on Instagram despite most of her Youtube audience being English speaking. I mean cool, she's allowed to post in German but I remember at the time she had quite a following for her Cambridge journey and then she suddenly stopped the vlogs in English.

I hope she's doing okay though, her health issues sound painful.

I agree, health is the most important thing and I hope she feels better soon and wish her all the best. I like her a lot and I want her to be happy and healthy.

aren't most of her viewers English speakers? I don't mind the German since im trying to learn it anyways, but I'd like to understand what she's saying lol
Yeah it's a weird move, her vids have always been in English. Maybe she's not bothered about her followers anymore but that would be odd as it does generate income for her.

IDK where you got 'dodadedo is Elena' from, given I said in my post that I'm literally a fucking English Lit PhD student, but go off I guess. I'd kill to be even half as put-together and organised as Elena seems on a day-to-day basis.

Isn't Elena coming up to her finals now? She's probably got a lot on. I suspect that using English worked for her while she was a studytuber but now that she's about to graduate she is maybe pivoting her channel and content.

I wouldn't know what she's saying/doing these days as she's only posting in German now and seems to have forgotten her Youtube followers who followed her uni journey for so long, in English (followers from all over the world). Going forward if she wants to stick to Instagram in German, fine, but at least say bye and thank you to the Youtube followers who she spoke to in English for the past 4-5 years ...

She’s going to think you are me because I DM’ed her almost exactly the same thing yesterday! 😂 ... so perhaps I just blown my cover but oh well 🤭

It’s astounding really, how her (and PaigeY) seem to be the only two, people like.
Yeah I think there are other lower profile ones out there who are decent, Astrid Franciszka (Paige's friend) comes to mind, but the common threads for all the likeable ones are: they're aware of their own privilege, they don't just study but get involved with other things and they're passionate about what they're learning (and this comes through in videos).

Sorry if all this is obvious from her social media (I don't have any lol) but is her bf German?

I'm German myself but I don't watch any German content but I can imagine that she could make more of a name for herself in the German community. A big fish small pond situation? She was never part of the British studytuber crew anyway.
And on her blog she said some plans of hers have changed + there's the situation with her grandfather. I wonder if she's planning on returning to Germany for her Masters and PhD then?

She graduated from a boarding school in Hong Kong, she comes from good money I'm guessing.
No, she really doesn't. Have you seen any of her videos? I'm just wondering because she constantly talks about her scholarships and about how she was able to finance everything.

She's from a middle class family. Her mom never attended university and has a job at a health insurance company that doesn't require a degree but an apprenticeship and that doesn't pay very much. Elena mentioned what it was at some point. I can tell because I am German as well and know people who work the same kind of job. She really isn't rich. She grew up with a single mom as well which is more difficult and she always explained how important it is for her to maintain all her scholarships because otherwise she would struggle financially.

The boarding school in Hong Kong is known for taking students in no matter their financial situation and providing huge scholarships to students who need them. I know because I thought about applying to that network of schools when I was fifteen. The application process is intense, lots of essays, interviews, presentations, an entire selection weekend.

Yeah, basically tories is a good descriptor for the CDU (from what I know about UK politics)
I'm sorry, but that's really unfair and not true at all. The CDU welcomes refugees whereas the Tories try to deport every single one of them. This is not a fair comparison. Angela Merkel was part of the CDU, for example, and she is hardly super conservative or terrible. She welcomed more refugees when she was in power than pretty much any other nation in Europe so she is hardly a Tory.

I actually registered here to ask about what happened to Elena.

I used to love her and watched all of her videos. I still like her as a person.

But I am really wondering what happened to her content. She went from regular youtube videos in English to no youtube videos at all and lots of TikTok and instagram content in German. I speak German but she feels like a completely different person in those videos.

Everything is different from her tone of voice to the way she talks. In English she was always very sweet and funny and in German she seems more tough and uses a lot of slang. It's like watching a completely different person. Her audience must be much younger now as well?

I wonder whether her boyfriend had something to do with it? That she wants to focus on German and life in Germany? I am not quite sure but I think she might plan to stay in Germany as she wrote on instagram that she doesn't believe in long distance relationships (only for a limited time period).

I wish she would produce youtube videos again and I miss her book club!

Maybe it is more fun for her to produce TikTok content in German? I think TikTok doesn't pay well at all so it can't be that. I miss her old content so much.

Honestly it's nice that she shares these moments with us, but the “things to make Elena happy – him” is giving me 14 year old girl vibes for some reason.
agreed! i also feel like the way she talks on tiktok in general is more juvenile than on youtube? like a lot more slang, tiktok lingo, etc. and i get that it's a different platform (plus she might just be more confident in german/know more slang terms, etc. but i haven't really noticed it in her german yt videos) but still, the way she speaks sounds like she's a middle schooler trying to fit in sometimes imo. no hate to her, it's the platfrom and maybe she's also still trying to figure out how to speak to the camera in german, i just personally don't like it.
why announce it on her 'professional' social media at all? is she trying to make it seem like she has a life besides studying, eating mcdonalds and listening to German rap?
i mean why does she talk about liking mcdonalds? or german rap? or reading a court of something and something or whatever the book series is? idk her social media isn't super "professional" in that sense, especially her tiktok, so why not talk about an additional aspect?
Unfortunately, I don't think she will ever go hack to English again. Maybe in YouTube, but I don't think so. When she first started speaking only German on Instagram, I assumed that she would lose a large amount of her followers, which would hopefully make her go back to English. For some reason, this didn't happen (I don't understand, does everyone suddenly speak german?) so she has no reason to start speaking English again. 🤷🏻‍♀️
yeah probably not, like i said before, she does have a large following on tiktok now which has been german-speaking from the start (i think?) and quickly surpassed her yt followers (within a couple months, after doing yt for years). those people probably also started following her ig, so yeah likely the majority of her ig followers is now german-speaking.

Not going to lie, I just died a little bit of jealousy. 18 points is insane. That‘s the equivalent to getting 100% in the U! No one gets 18 points - with the exception of Elena of course! At least her crazy amount of studying payed off but wow ...
Holy cow! She definitely deserves it though, I'm lowkey proud of her. It looks like she has to work hard to get the grades she does and I really respect that.

Plus she literally cannot cook which is scary. She's in, what, her third or fourth year and can only boil pasta and get McDonald's? Doesn't seem healthy at all. Not sure if its a "haha look at me can't feed myself so relatable" or if she genuinely cannot make anything.

The amount of study with me videos she does is excessive. I think people have trouble finding her other videos because when you click on her channel there are like 10 study with me videos in a roll.

How does she afford having all chanel skincare products and stuff? I haven't even seen middle aged adults own so many luxury brand items

I'm not sure but maybe they are just not 'official yet'? I feel like Elena maintains a lot of professionalism (and 'innocence'?) on her platforms, so she is probably unlikely to describe him as someone she has a 'thing' with, or that they are not official/exclusive like most people would

Sorry I know this thread is basically dead but does anyone still watch her tiktoks? I really don't know what to make of her content now or where she seems to be going with it

For Astrid (and Elena) I've just finished my postgrad law degree so can relate to them a lot, especially Astrid! Maybe we should make a thread for her but it seems like if we like the studytuber we really don't have a lot to say about them 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

Thank you!

I just feel like she is producing lots and lots of content on TikTok so I don't think it's that she doesn't have anything to say. She even has a whole podcast on TikTok in which she is talking lots.

Yes, it's her decision of course and I still like her. It is nothing personal. It just feels weird how she would go from 100% in English to 95% percent in German. I speak German but if I didn't I would feel pretty sad I think. Many people have followed her for years and she basically left them without even a goodbye or a thank you.

I think she would be familiar with English slang as she has been taught exclusively in English since the age of sixteen, for six years.

I don't know if a translation would make sense because it is so much slang, but she used to greet people in a sweet and friendly way "Hi everyone, it's Elena" and now she's basically like "Hey hotties, whazzzupppp yayyyy" (not exactly as slang is hard to translate but she calls people "Schnecken" which literally means "snails" and is a slang term for a hot/attractive girl). Maybe she wants to appeal to a younger TikTok audience.

Again, I love her still, it is just so confusing to me.
Bit in bold: this is what doesn't seem right, she practically abandoned her very polite followers on Youtube during her final year, people who had watched her journey from the beginning, were rooting for her, she barely updated them during the past year and hasn't really explained herself or said "thanks but goodbye" to them. It just seems rude, to be honest. It would be different if she decided social media was over, but she's clearly on Instagram and TikTok a lot, so it's not a social media thing. I think she should do one more Youtube video acknowledging her fans and thanking them, and wrap up the channel if that's how she feels.

She has said herself that she is middle class. If you have any proof that she is not that would be a different issue but you don't. Therefore you are assuming things whereas I am simply defending her based on the facts we have. That is the difference.
I never said she wasn't middle class? I'm so confused what you're trying to say here? What am I assuming?

She was in a privileged position due to her own hard work. Her fees are actually completely covered. She stated on instagram that her university owes her money and has to pay her back a certain amount because her scholarship covered a larger amount than the fees she had to pay. I don't know if you watched the video in which she lists all the things she did in high school but she tutored younger kids, was volunteering for years and did lots of other activities (I think about fifteen or so). She spent basically all of her time studying and helping others. She is not an ordinary person. I can't even understand how one could manage so much stuff.
Her graduation ig post with her mom said her scholarships didn't cover everything, so at the beginning of her degree her mom said that she'd manage to pay for it somehow and she kept that promise. That's the info i was going off of.
I also never said she didn't work hard, she absolutely did. The fact of the matter is however, someone being able to devote all of their time to studying and volunteering is a privilege and not everyone who does as much as she does gets the recognition and opportunities she got. Once again though, she absolutely worked hard and deserved everything she got, I never said any differently.

She is not an ordinary person. I can't even understand how one could manage so much stuff.
...yes she is? she's not superhuman or anything... what a strange statement. She absolutely worked hard yes, but she also got lucky and has had certain privileges (and that's fine!!! good for her! it just doesn't make any sense for us to deny that she did!)

Designer things are more sustainable and the opposite of fast fashion. She can't win with people. If she bought her stuff at Primark or Shein they would criticize her too.
... Designer is not the opposite of fast fashion. I mean I guess in the sense that it lasts longer because it's (hopefully) higher quality and doesn't follow trend cycles as quickly as fast fashion does? And some brands are obviously better than others but luxury fashion isn't automatically sustainable or ethical just because it's more expensive? If her goal was sustainability, she could be buying actually sustainable brands (before you claim I am criticizing her for not buying sustainable brands: I am not. I am just saying that since you brought up sustainability, if sustainability was her goal there'd be better options).
I am not criticizing her for buying designer bags, I merely said it was interesting that she values brand names so much, and that she can obviously spend her money how she wants but it's still a privilege to be able to prioritize it the way she does. Where are you getting criticism from that? Feel free to let me know and I'll word it differently next time <3 x

Yes, as you said, they are not in the same spot exactly. That was my point.
No it wasn't, at least that's not what you communicated. Your point was that it was an unfair comparison because of how Merkel (and the CDU) dealt with the refugee crisis. I don't think the comparison was unfair because I think that one aspect does not negate the fact that in a majority of topics, the CDU and Tories have similar views an and because I think Merkel's management of the refugee crisis does not accurately represent the entire party, especially not as off late. CDU and Tories are in a similar spot and therefore comparable, especially in a one-sentence online forum answer where someone is trying to contextualize where on the political spectrum the CDU is (in relation to UK parties).
