Why do you let a mini dachshund (or any dachshund or any long backed short legged dog) go up your stairs?

I don't, I carry her up - it isn't safe for Dachshunds to go up anything it can lead to their backs having lots of issues. When I said she takes herself up it was a figure of speech...

Am so annoyed, my dog has been attacked earlier, he was first attacked 18 months ago, and it's taken alot of hard work for him to trust other dogs, but today was awful, both mine on leads, a dog off the lead went for them, I managed to pick my oldie up, and was trying to get this dog off mine, who had obviously had enough and was having ago back, it was horrendous, I was livid with the other dog owners, now I'm shaken and soo upset.

Hi everyone. I see this thread is dead but wondered of anyone had experienced anything similar. Our girl (floppy eared), has had recurring ear infections for most of her life. This time it's yeasty and she's being swabbed on Monday. In the meantime our vet told us to switch to a food with hydrolysed protein, (two were suggested and we picked one from that), which she started yesterday. Fortunately she loves it. After 3 months we will challenge her diet with vet guidance. She's started on Wells Z/D. After 2 days I've already noticed a difference in her stools - less odour, less flatulence and no mucus.

What are the most common protein allergies in your experience? It costs a bomb and her insurance has just gone up to £90 p/m. Ugh. I'll do anything for her of course.

My dog had a lot of infections but since we started using stinky stuff and finger cleaners .. you stick it on your finger and clean it out , we literally have to do this every other day & we’ve managed to avoid the vets and their ridiculous charges for two years now. X

One of our dogs was attacked by an off lead German shepherd who had apparently "never done that before". We always keep our dogs on leads as they choose to go deaf on occasion, even though they would love to be running around freely and chasing balls etc.

OMG. We have a pug and can relate to this. He sleeps downstairs and once I could hear him snoring from my bedroom (ear plugs in, door shut )

I know this thread is about where your dog's sleep ( my jr is under the throw in bed with me) but my other boy needs an op this week, am so worried, with this covid I can't go in the vets with him, have to hand him over in the car park, has anyone else on here had to do the same?

I had to take my dog to the vet last week... I was allowed to go in while they checked her over (she’d had sickness and diarrhoea for few days). Then I had to sit in waiting room when they took her into another room to cut her nails. I hope ur boy will be ok x

Our girl has elbow Dysplasia .So has to sleep downstairs till she has operation .She is so affectionate and loving she goes into her cage with her teddies fine but it's not the same as her snuggle for cuddles.She is our world she is such a happy girl who loves everything

We have a mini wire haired dachshund, he doesn’t shed any hair....it’s amazing he’s allowed to sleep on the sofa on a blanket. He knows he’s not allowed anywhere else but often moves when one of us does to get the warmth. He sleeps in a bed on the door next to us, he’s allowed on the bed but just gets too excited and doesn’t settle so he’s never on it. Plus his little legs means he can’t get up or down on his own

Ours climbs the stairs. He can’t get down though so we carry him. There’s lots of evidence that climbing and jumping actually strengthens their muscles and prevents IVDD. He has a ramp for the sofa though but will occasionally just jump down, same with the steps down to the garden....there’s no stopping him

yes and yes, she's a Bichon and doesn't shed really. we (probably me more than my OH) love her to bits and she's like a child to us jaja!

I've a Japanese Spitz two layers of hair!! Jesus when she sheds!! I've a little trick I open the front and back doors and let the wind do most of the work then I Hoover

I use a window swoosh thing I don't know it's name to get dog hair up from my carpets it's takes 5 mins

It's a big committment, might sound daft but it's almost like having a child, needs fed, watered, exercised & given attention.
It's not only work that needs thinking about but also if you go out for the day, all day somewhere or holidays too.
We have had rescue Greyhounds over the years which are fairly low maintenance & easy going dogs, they like to sleep but still need you to be there, as dogs can suffer from separation anxiety.
Being on their own a lot might mean they chew up the house, do the toilet etc.
If you can find a work-a-round which suits then go for it as pets are very rewarding & great for our mental health too.

Yeah I have had dogs previously but just cats at the moment. I’d love to go camping with a dog. I think I could get a dog Walker 4/6 days and then take the dog to work with my the other 2

When dogs are out for walks, they tread in dog shit and all kinds of things. They also stink to high heaven, pant and slobber. I don't know anyone can bear to have them on their beds. They are sweet but they're just so unhygienic.

I live in an area of dog lovers, but all it takes is for someone to turn up, thinking their dog is ok, and letting it off the lead and attack, you've been lucky, I wouldn't wish what I've had to go through today on any caring dog owner.

Oh absolutely not! My dachshund was attacked when he was just a puppy and on a lead. Fortunately he wasn’t seriously hurt but he ended up on his back which as every dachshund owner will tell you, is a heart stopping moment. The sound of him screaming is still etched on my memory and it took a long time for me to feel confident again. He doesn’t go far now and is very cautious when approaching other dogs. I’m sorry that your dog has been attacked and I hope that you’re both ok.

Sorry I don't agree with that, I think folks are breeding their dogs now to cash in, if I had a bitch who had pups, I would be more interested in how the pup would fit in with new owners lives, not the money side.

We bought a cockerpoo to be trained as a therapy dog for our ASD son. Researched a few breeds and cockerpoo seemed to suit our family and sons needs/ training and typical temperament. He’s awesome and I’d happily hand over £3k for another knowing what a dog can bring to our family.

Both my dogs sleep on my bed (small cocker spaniels) I made a rod for my own back my second cocker was very poorly when he was about 16 weeks old, he had surgery after surgery and he would whine from the pain all night so I brought them up to bed with me and they’ve been there ever since plus my husband sometimes works nights and I get lonely and honestly cuddling up to them in bed on a night is the best part of my day

Hi! That’s so kind! It’s been so good so far. Dogs have been getting on so well. We had cries for the first few nights from pup, then early EARLY morning barks from our older dog, so we let them sleep together and been perfect since Ralf (pup) has been so good at toilets too!! Bless em.

Aww bless, they look so cute together, am glad it worked out for you, love that pic of Ralf on his back, my youngster, who is 2 now sleeps like that, but he's a gangly collie!!
