I only have 1 more day with my hideous boss - she is off on Friday which is my last day here.
I am so nervous about my new job, it is stopping me sleeping. What if I am not capable, what if I don't meet their expectations? I have never felt so insecure about my own abilities!
On the plus side, I had an email from my new place last week saying my new Iphone & Macbook have been delivered and asking if I want to use my current apple ID or set up a new work based one for them. I feel like a kid at Christmas! lol

Think back to when you started your soon to be exjob.

You went in knowing they had chosen you and you could so do this job.

The only thing that stopped that being true was someone else’s behaviour. Not you.

It will take a while to get your confidence back but you will get there.

Your new job wouldn’t have hired you if they didn’t think you were capable. Knowing someone else has faith in your abilities is a brilliant feeling so enjoy it!

Fancy 🤩💻 Their expectations will just be that you’re willing to learn/do your best. It’s not a new recruit who makes mistakes that’s a problem, it’s someone who won’t heed instruction and has no work ethic (dealt with this recently). You obviously don’t sound like that and it takes months to settle in to a new role so try not to let any imposter-type thinking get a hold of you. Your new workplace sounds promising ✨

An update on my ordeal with my nemesis:

I told him I would deliver the report by Tuesday COB which was absolutely fine as we met the deadline due today.

Today, I took the afternoon off. He WhatsApped me at 4pm asking me to log in for something urgent which ended up taking two whole hours to sort out. When I did what I needed to do, he ping me and said: "Once you're done with this, please assist with XYZ" (which was me assisting him with a system query).

That's hella rude. I logged in for one particular item. That thing he asked me assistance on, I had already showed him in the system this morning. There was someone from my team sitting next to him, he could have asked them. It's just a system navigation query. The "please assist" as if I were his servant really got me to see red because I already voluntarily logged in during my afternoon off and I get an order saying "please assist". I'm not a slave. I didn't even get an ounce of appreciation saying "thanks for taking some time out of your afternoon off to do this".

Glad the project I have with him is over today. Thank GOD. What a bad personality to work with.

You need to set boundaries. Don’t respond on your time off. You are paid a set salary. Every time you do unpaid OT or log on when you are meant to be off, you are reducing your annual salary. There is a touch of martyrdom in your post. You voluntarily logged on. Is that you trying to score brownie points or an expectation? If former, no good deed goes unpunished. If latter, you need to redefine your work life balance. You are a unit of work. You get X amount of pay for x amount of work. That’s it in a nutshell. Voluntarily logging on in your time off is daft, nobody will thank you, as you have found out.

I had to log in because I'm the only one with the access in the system and something needed to be done by COB today otherwise there would be penalties. It's not about being a martyr or earning brownie points. My point is about the fact that their processes are so bad that accesses are restricted, there is no back-up when you're out and everything needs to be done by COB by one person (the person assigned to said portfolio).

I could have chosen to ignore and simply log off - then I would have been put in hellfire on Monday for making them miss a crucial deadline because no one else had access. It is their job to find a back-up, but there's none, so what I am meant to do?

In any case, given I logged off at 2pm only to log back in at 5pm for another 2 hours. I's pretty much a lunch break, so I will ask to cancel this afternoon off in the system. It's not fair otherwise.

Definitely cancel the time off you took, you didn't actually take it.
You are made a single point of breakage by being the on!y person about to do something, which isn't okay. Unless you own the company, and even then, that's a major red flag....

I started my new job today, and already its a million times better than my old one. I certainly don't regret making the decision to quit my old job with nothing to go to. Best thing I ever did😊

The interview I was scheduled for for Friday was postponed to today and I had a nice chat with the lady. Definitely someone I would like to work with, if this works out. Now waiting game again to see if they will invite me for a full loop with multiple interviews in one day.

 they already contacted me, I'm up for the final stage. Holy cow, that was fast.

I'm really struggling with work at the moment. I've been there just over a year and the last four months have been so busy with work due for various members of the team, we've been understaffed, no recognition has been given for continuing to meet deadlines we've been given. One person in our office has a slightly different job and sits there all day swinging on his chair, playing on his phone, going for walks to the canteen. We have been raising this for six months and keep being told things are happening in the background, but on the face of it nothing has changed at all! Had a bit of a breakdown today as I got criticised in a meeting for not doing a piece of work that I a) haven't had time to do, and b) was told wasn't needed for two more weeks. Mentioned to my manager (who had noticed I was upset) that it's unfair that I get criticised for missing one thing whilst he does nothing and faces no consequences. Was then told I am making myself miserable by focusing on someone else's behaviour - well you try sitting in the same office as someone who is doing tit all whilst you're run off your feet and not noticing it! It's not possible!

Focus on someone else’s behaviour means they haven’t got the balls to do something about it. Lasts person wil get what’s coming to them.

I work with a woman in an office who hasn’t bothered to learn how our operating system works. She has been in post for over 5 years and still can’t do anything beyond the very basics. Everyone in our team has spent hours upon hours sitting with her only for her to then not use said training and months later need retraining or her notes don’t make sense… We’ve all raised it multiple times but it just gets swept under the rug.
I put in a formal complaint a while back and they got her to sit with us all again and yet again she didn’t use the knowledge and can’t do it. They ended her performance management as they ‘didn’t want to hound her’ and now I’m getting Teams messages asking the basics again. I log all time spent with her on my Outlook so they can see the time I’m wasting on retraining her for the nth time.
My manager is useless with anything involving actual management and difficult conversations. The current excuse for not being able to do her job is the menopause (I don’t believe you get amnesia from this) but then what was the excuse prior to this… rant over I’m off to look for a new job 😮💨

Can you just not bother to respond? That’s my default these days. If something like this drags on with no resolution, or someone is difficult to deal with, I stop responding (this is if I have a paper trail showing I did try the right thing). If someone then comes after me I say you are aware of X issue, this is not within my gift to solve and leave it there. Avoidance, I have learned, is better for your health. That is what management is doing with regard to your colleague, they are avoiding the issue and pushing the problem elsewhere in the hopes they can avoid managing the issue. They are paid to manage the colleague, you are not.

Yes I agree wholeheartedly with you, they are hoping we will resolve the issue for them as that might mean they have to manage a situation.
I might try the ignore situation and see how that goes but she is very manipulative and when it’s been done in the past she says no one will help and turns it on us. She is literally the most inept person I’ve ever worked with but also the cleverest in terms of turning on the pity party.

You could write an idiots guide, and put it on the intranet etc. worth thinking about, and then point everybody that way. Try the ignore first though.

Asked my boss if he was free and he was so I called him and he answered “yeah?!” 🙄 jeez, I hadn’t spoken to him in two weeks. He also cancelled my PD meeting (he does every time) and rearranged it last, after the apprentice.

I don’t get people who get so engrossed in office politics to the point they treat decent people like dirt. I’m being frozen out because they don’t give me the tools to do my job and old me found solutions to all the obstacles, but now I’m doing what every other dept does and passing it back 👋🏻

The recent online reviews left for the company echo my issues and the fact there’s been lots of leavers this past year, a couple of big ones due to be announced. And a director was definitely slagging me off in a call when I joined the other month as she almost done it again today without noticing I’d joined. Toxic stanks.

I’ve been invited for some interviews but going to decline the ones so far as I will not be going back to these inept, brown-nosing hell holes. One interview email gave “helpful to do tips” e.g. Look the part – it is better to be over-dressed than under-dressed… Do not ramble 🤦🏼‍♀️

Could you respond via email saying something like you’re not able to help further as you have previously given training to cover this area, that any further support should be sought from their line manager?

i can actually remember having had enough of helping someone in a similar way, we’d even produced a full instructions guide to make our processes clear and understandable to everyone. but no, still being asked specifically by my boss to help someone do their job, and that someone getting paid more than me at that, was soul destroying.
