I absolutely hate my job. I fell into it after college after failing my a-levels and not making it into uni (basically had dropped out due to my dad being ill at 17 - had to look after mum siblings). I was 18 years old on £25,000 which sounded amazing and it was, but I’m still there now 7 years later. I absolutely HATE it, hate the work, don’t really like the people. But it’s extremely secure, I’ll never get fired and the workload is light. Like very light. Sounds like a dream but I’d actually rather be challenged, use my brain and enjoy the work.

I’m pregnant now and there’s basically the best maternity in the country (it’s the public sector) so planning to rinse that and then see what I can do about it afterwards.

Definitely do that. Security is all very well, but you are too young to be in a career cul de sac because of security. Being under utilised and well paid could be manna from heaven for some people but it is soul destroying if you feel you have more to offer. I stayed in a job for just that reason, good money, flexibilities. But if I had my time all over again I would not choose safety over a satisfying job with good people around you.

Thank you. Everyone around me tells me to stop moaning because they’ve never heard of a job where you can basically lie in bed all day and get paid - but it’s genuinely mind numbing. I’m losing brain cells by the day. I’d genuinely take a huge pay cut to feel happy, and hopefully can once my boyfriend’s career progresses. It’s not in the field I want, it’s the field that was gonna pay a lot to a girl in a tit situation when she was 17. I’m more than aware I’ll probably have to start at the bottom somewhere. Looking at my bf he has the best day most days, enjoys his job and his work colleagues are basically his besties. I’m so jealous!

People who have never been truly bored for weeks don’t get that you can have bore-out, but it is a genuine thing and not healthy at all.
You’re still young and you can take time to consider where you would like to go, whether that might be a degree or another company, there are so many options. Wishing you the best of luck with this, it must have been hard taking on so much responsibility so young. I hope you can find something that you enjoy and that you picked because you want it, you deserve that.

If you are in the UK, legally you only have to work 2 weeks notice.
Not according to my contract! Technically you can actually walk out at any time without serving your notice because chances are, no employers can be bothered taking it to small claims court. However I desperately need my reference from this job because I've been there three years and have had so much responsibility. I'm just gonna have to ride it out.

I’m a nurse too and my heart also isn’t in it anymore. I moved from ward to community and I’m still miserable. I’m thinking about working on the bank. I’m sick of having to work my life around a rota.

I hear you! If I don't get the promotion I've gone for I'm going to stick it out for a year longer to see if we want another child, if we do wait until I can get some more maternity pay (again, very good pay as it's the NHS - though not as good as my friend who works in a university, she gets 26 weeks half pay or something as well as SMP ) and then leave for good.

It’s really difficult isn’t it? Although we have degrees & transferable skills there doesn’t seem to be any other roles out there apart from PIP assessor jobs which I wouldn’t do.

Lol my boyfriend’s company is having huge financial issues atm so they can’t do any orders (he’s in sales) so for the last week he’s basically had no workload and he’s really upset by this. I replied this is my exact life day in day out which isn’t changing anytime soon. he goes “yeah but you’re content with this” ARE YOU AN IDIOT IVE SAID 500 TIMES I AM NOT HAPPY IN MY JOB AND NOT HAVING WORK TO DO IS ACTUALLY RUINING MY LIFE!!!! It’s so bleeping horrible that I’m on an online forum pouring my heart out to kind strangers on Tattle!!!!! I’m quite literally stuck as I can’t afford a 7k paycut into a job I’ll enjoy and I need the maternity now! My GOD what is wrong with boys

ps. I’m pregnant and hormonal

This ended up being way longer than I thought so have put behind a spoiler. Sorry!!

TLDR: rant about colleague making me wonder what I actually want to do with my career
Need to have a rant about a colleague. We get on fine most of the time, she’s easy to talk to and can be quite funny but at the same time she has absolutely no respect for me and sometimes she makes me really, really hate being there. I’m not her boss or supervisor but I am senior to her, kind of in a ‘mentor’ type of way. It’s my responsibility to make sure she has all the knowledge she needs to be able to do her job correctly and minimise errors and to pretty much keep the department running (I’m NHS).

She’s not new, she’s actually been with us for almost 2 years now but yet every single week I still have to point the same things out to her that I did in her very first week. For example I’ll ask her not to do something because it goes against our department policy (being on her phone, leaving the reception unmanned for extended periods etc), I’ll remind her to do things that she hasn’t done from days before, I have to remind her of her daily duties and so on. She lies constantly. Sometimes white lies and sometimes big lies. Anytime I or someone else questions her about something she’ll pretend it’s the first time she’s ever heard it or say ‘I wasn’t told/didn’t know that’ even if it was something you told her yourself. Thursday last week I asked her yet again to not be on her phone while at work outside of break time, she said ‘oh yeah no problem it won’t happen again’. Today I walk into her office and there she is on her phone not even trying to hide it. She saw that I caught her and still stayed on it, almost like a big ‘duck you, what are you gonna do’. I ignored it and walked back out again.

It sounds so minor but this is a daily occurrence and it’s with multiple things. There are things in our department that must be done every single day and she doesn’t do them - she’s either busy on her phone, she’s browsing the internet or has just chosen not to do them. Our department used to be so organised, everything was up to date and you knew exactly what was going on. These days it’s a total tit show. Stuff left lying everywhere, jobs half done, basic housekeeping being ignored. I used to be so proud of our department when I was solely responsible for it but now it’s an embarrassment. Her main priority at work is socialising be it on her phone speaking to god knows who or leaving her reception unmanned to go elsewhere and gossip with other staff. She doesn’t give a tit if I say anything because she’s gonna ignore it anyway as my role holds no authority.

She has no respect for my position and the fact that ITS MY JOB to keep her right. I’m not saying it for the sake of it, it is literally what I am paid to do. But she seemed to clock on very early on that if she doesn’t follow through with what I ask, there isn’t anything I can do so she knows she’ll get away with it. I don’t really understand why she’s like this though, she’s been pretty vocal about wanting to progress and move upwards and even move into my role if I were to leave but yet she’s doing absolutely nothing to show this. In fact, she’s doing the complete opposite and is showing all the reasons why she shouldn’t progress and is highlighting that she isn’t even fulfilling her current role.

I’ve tried flagging it with my management but they’re not interested because it’s a small blip on their radar of things they have to deal with in the NHS. I understand this to an extent, but with my colleague not doing her job properly it makes me look like I’m not doing mine properly because I’m the one responsible for her. How am I supposed to progress and get better at my job if this one person is stopping me from doing so? Everything she does incorrectly falls back on me.

Ugh I’m just fed up with it all. It feels almost passive aggressive because we’re so friendly with each other and do actually get on but all of this disrespect and ignorance is intertwined. It’s such a confusing environment for me to be in.

It also doesn’t help that I’m still stuck in two minds about whether I want to go to university later this year or not. Part of me is like ‘duck it, go for it!’ and the other part is like ‘am I just considering it because I’m unhappy in my current situation’. I just can’t seem to get my head straight and actually figure out what I want and that doesn’t even include narrowing down which uni course to apply for. I’m stuck between Accounting and Finance or Business Analytics - I already have the qualifications for entry to both courses which is great, but as previously mentioned I just can’t seem to figure out if I want to do it or if it’s just a means to get out of my current situation😑

The first thing that jumps out is you are so friendly with her. Some friend. Familiarity breeds contempt. Not sure if it’s too late but boundaries should be set. And you should forget about the friendship bit. You need her to work effectively, she isn’t, she thinks she has you where she wants you. She is running rings around you.

Firstly sit her down and explain what needs doing on a daily and weekly basis. Explain rules such as leaving reception and phone use. Get her to sign it and put it in her p file and tell her it will be kept for a year
Is her PADR due? Do you completeher PADR and pay progression? I’d again mention all these at PADR time

One thing I’ve used is actually putting lists up- what’s to be done daily, weekly etc

If it continues then you have documented evidence of support and how you’ve tried to help her achieve. It’s then a competency issue that management will have to be taken seriously

I'm fairly certain that my work are going to be pushing a proper RTO demand soon (probably 2-3 days a week) as we've been told in our team that we need to start showing up more as a team.

My teams other members live a fair distance from the office - I'm talking 3-4 hour trains, during covid a few people moved to Wales/Ireland, etc.
A few of us (me) are nearer the office but don't really go in much as quite frankly it's pointless when almost your entire team aren't there, the main manager lives the furthest away and flies over every so often.

Now the team have fought back clearly, with one of the members saying they'll come in 1-2 days a month, another saying 4 days a month, etc.
I know I'll probably have to suck it up and look for a better salary if I'm forced back in, but it feels really unfair that I'm sort of expected to come in more than those who moved away to incredibly cheap areas of the country while still on cushty London salaries. I know that these people aren't on remote contracts.

I don't want to kick up too much of a fuss, I know my work is contracted as having the office as my 'main' place of work... but it feels really bloody unfair to demand people back in to pretty much sit alone without their team just because they're 'closer to the office'. I suppose I just wondered if anyone else has been in this situation and how they handled it?
