Absolutely, completely and utterly terrified. Since being a very young child I have vivid memories of lying in bed having panic attacks because I just could not comprehend how we go from being alive, to eternal, dark, nothingness. I don't know what happened to me to give me those thoughts so early on, but it was horrific. It's so hard to describe but I'd be lying there and out of nowhere suddenly picture it in my mind and just descend into an almost choking panic and start hyperventilating, like, nothing, forever? Not even 1000 or 10000 years, for ever and ever and ever. Anyway, I lived most of my life like that and only had more significant episodes of fear with specific and generally passing events like pandemics etc. But that all changed when my Dad died of cancer aged 53. A few years later my Grandma met the same fate and I also lost my Grandad, beloved dog and both my partners grandparents within a very short space of time. It was so much death, loss, misery and honestly suffering. None of them died 'peacefully' as we are led to believe/dream of. It honestly has irreparably ducked me and I didn't really have time or the tools to process or deal with it all.
Since then my general anxiety has turned into health anxiety which has literally ruined my life. I spend every single day endlessly worrying about illness (usually cancer and always jumping to worse case scenario and imagining all that comes with that), checking symptoms, googling, looking at photos, reading the same articles over and over and over. I am completely consumed and obsessed over the fear of death and if not mine, losing my partner or now my baby which either would be the end of me if I'm honest. I know people say you cope, but not everyone does and I couldn't, nor would want to live without them. It's also made my own fear of death 1000 times worse because the thought of leaving them without me makes me physically ill, or missing out on my babies life, I can't bare it.
I wish I could say I've found a way to navigate living like this but I'm 30 and still haven't. There's an old quote about "do not let the fear of dying keep you from living" or something along those lines and it resonates so deeply with me because that is completely what I do. I am so scared of dying, I don't live. And I don't know what to do about it. I try and distract myself as much as possible but it only gets so far y'know?
I honestly truly envy people who have religion. My OH doesn't worry because while he doesn't believe in a God as such, he does believe in something because the world is so complex and amazing, it seems too hard to believe it's just chance and all for nothing. But I just don't have the same faith, I do believe we just return to the dirt and honestly, how do any of us process that?
Humans have evolved far past what we should have IMO, we weren't ever meant to consider our own mortality or unhappiness and I think that's the route of alot of evils.
