I remember vaguely a bloke from Moscow, Russia who made a big deal about how he was coming to the UK to visit... Swanage. He did a thread documenting his trip, his own personal travel diary. I think people were mostly humouring him in the replies although a few overly earnest types seemed genuienly into it.

I especially recall a post he parroted from the Russian Embassy warning about homosexuality in the UK and it was surprising how few people made sure he knew the UK was very different from Russia in that respect. Was an interesting moment of a slight culture clash!

Now that most of the right wing posters have been banned from AVF, the raging lefties are going after a member named Rustybin. I guess they need a target to direct their hate at. Rusty is probably just left of centre and apparently voted for Starmer, but often brings a much needed rational point of view to the political discussions. He is getting ridiculed, and sometimes blatantly insulted, on the Trump thread (despite him being a Democrat supporter and a Trump critic) for trying to point out that the US will not turn into a dictatorship just because Trump is in charge. Several posters aren't happy that Rusty is still planning to take a couple of holidays in the US this year, some of the climate obsessives just can't accept that he flies full stop, some even believe that the US should be treated like South Africa during the apartheid era while Trump is in charge and is definitely not a country to visit!!
Today on the UK DWP benefits thread, Rusty is trying to argue that quite a few people are cheating the system and this seems to have offended some of the regulars. A poster named Lynx posted this. "RustyBin, go and have a wee lie down to get your blood pressure lowered". A comment like this appears to breach AVF rules, even worse when you consider that Lynx happens to be one of the moderators!

The original parasocial nutcases. Josie was awful, but she was an ordinary looking, overweight woman who managed to ‘pull’ the house hottie and a lot of women projected onto her. It was glaringly obvious to everyone else he wasn’t all that into her and in fact was probably deep in the closet but there was no reasoning. I had so many rows with them.

The BB forum was brilliant. So many slightly misogynistic weirdos like Veri and Mactowin who’d accuse all female viewers of being ‘bitter jealous old hags’ when a female housemate they fancied would get evicted.

Oh Christ, Veri, a ver(i)y fucking annoying twat who would always enter BB threads deliberately saying the opposite to the general consensus just to get attention. In the CBB racism debacle and the foul Danielle Lloyd, she even questioned if using racist language was in itself racist and because Danielle was 'so beautiful' people were misconstruing her behaviour. I had to log off if I'd been on the wine because that fucker would have had me banned for life if I'd been given half a chance. I always assumed she was a woman tbh. I am too late, the posts have been deleted. It was a horrible post about all the "dead bodies" she has seen in her life, but it included a dead son. I have never seen any post from "her" to suggest such a thing before. Awful poster.

I do remember her early appearances on DS were in a thread talking about Michael Barrymore and she would not let anyone have an opinion that was anything other than sympathy/understanding for him because "you don't know" what's it's like to have a death happen in your home. So that seemed to imply something.

Not anything I think is real, they are a deranged fantasist with severe mental illness and the illness part manifests in the occasional meltdowns they have where posts gets scrubbed and we all have to pretend nothing happened.

I don't remember that, but nothing would surprise me with DS.

Another regular from my time on DS - Christa. She wound some people up with her feminist discussions, and others (me) with her rampant snobbery - she was very middle class. I did agree with her more than a lot of people. I can see her being on Mumsnet now. She was about the same age as me so will be in her mid-40s now.

Gortonian was a popular poster on the tv and radio threads and often quite knowledgeable. After a short absence and one not long enough to be anything out of the ordinary, his sister came on to inform us that he had passed away suddenly. He was in his early sixties. This was about six years ago.

He was a lovely chap, I was very sad to hear of his passing. He was often mentioned by Steve Allen 🥲

Another poster I’ve just remembered was the girl who would post photos of amazing cakes she’d made, but then died of anorexia. She was as far as I could tell a real person as she had a blog elsewhere and a Twitter account where she’d also post photos of the cakes.

I remember her. That was so sad. She posted about kidney failure, a result of her anorexia.

She was a fucking nutter. She regularly used to to fly back and forth between Belfast and London so she could go to Elstree to meet the Eastenders cast, despite not having a job.

Yep that’s what I had the biggest problem with overall - the hypocrisy. iirc there was a sticky on the politics forum written by the site owner, basically saying to keep it respectful, respect each others viewpoints, etc, yet he himself doesn’t practice what he preaches. Either welcome discussions with people with opposing viewpoints or don’t - just be honest about it!

But it’s more like “all opinions are welcome…as long as they’re the same as ours”. Fuck that.

Yep, plus the ignoring of the rules when it came to antisemitism.

Posts like "Israeli's are the undisputed champions of child murdering" or "zionists barely qualify as Jews" clearly breach the rule "must not submit libellous, insulting, antagonistic, racist, misogynistic, prejudiced, aggressive or otherwise abusive content to or about any individual, group or organisation."

Yet for some reason reports about these posts and many others were routinely rejected. Which is of course a double standard (which is itself antisemitic).

Especially when you consider how quick the mods and Stuart himself are to see racism in posts where none exists.
