Head office roles don’t tend to be “poverty” salaries or poor working conditions beyond bad management, warehouse work however does and is often overlooked imo/e and I hope more is done to tackle this in the future. Atm it feels like a moral failing, same with logistics but that’s subcontracted so easy for them to wash their hands of. With HO I think the worst shenanigans happen at mid levels (eg those who may be reporting into a head of discipline, or another step removed) but that’s because there’s a wider salary range + more people so discrepancies arise easier, ppl are at the mercy of managers and there are plenty of tit ones about. D&I abysmal for a variety of reasons.

I’m 1 (or 2?) level removed from the CEO if I’m following ur methodology right - I report into a CTO who reports into them. I think I’m fairly paid for my day to day but there’s issues with how frenzies can whip up quite quickly and a low value add project suddenly becomes the most urgent thing ever just because usual suspects are involved, and I’m tired of that, not got many more gifting seasons left in me tbh. I’m hoping to leave in the next 2 years and go back to tech but as we all know the timings aren’t great for that atm!

That’s so interesting @Tabitha thank you!

I wonder if we are comparing apples and oranges a bit since Matches are a platform for lots of brands rather than a single designer? I read something the other day about an influencer who took a pay cut to work at Matches, I think it was possibly Camille Charriere, and she said her Matches salary was £22,000 (a few years ago). The other area in fashion where I think salaries have been traditionally low is journalism, that’s why you get all these wealthy gals who were able to work on fashion mags back in the day due to wealthy parents, who’ve used it as a springboard into influencing (“I was a fashion editor 🥴”). But it’s good to know that actual fashion houses look after their staff a bit better.

Yeah my experience is more companies like Matches and Net A Porter. Anyone junior is on like £15k and ‘mid’ people are on around £22k- in London 😮

What disciplines are these in if you don’t mind me asking? I’ve never heard of salaries that low even for non technical roles eg marketing or merchandising? The worst I’ve heard is £22-25k for a junior.

If anyone’s hiring people at £15k they need to give their head a wobble. As a hiring manager you have influence on this, and if your dept only has budget for a £15k salary then you don’t have budget to hire you have budget for a temp contractor resource at best.

Ecom (I know you’re in ecom but probs not at the reallyyyy junior end) product writing, size and fit, that sort of fairly menial but still head office stuff. It’s good to know my experiences are the exception though! :)

To be honest though I haven’t checked since inflation. I’m talking about 2013-2014 I was aware juniors were on £16k- because of todays inflation that wouldn’t be the case now

The Cettire order I placed yesterday is out for delivery today. Will see what it's like when it turns up but super impressed so far tbh

omg sweetie bless you, no you’re not alone in being mugged off by an employer and the stories I could tell 🙄 but £15k is not the budget for a perm employee it’s a contractor for x weeks/months tops, a lot of this is down to poor management. £20ks is normal but should be a fair value exchange in that you’re learning rapidly and moving up quickly, or moving onto your next role within 12-18 months. I’m in engineering and if we can afford to pay multiples of this to juniors then there’s no reason the business should tolerate a junior in content or marketing or whatever under a living wage.

Is this still your situ now? I wish tattle had a dm function still as happy to talk about this or talk about your CV, appreciate I’m not in your specialty but you shouldn’t be working years for someone who keeps your salary at that level my love. Reddit tends to have some good career advice (also appreciate this skews to a more tech PoV) although some of it is unhinged crypto podcast guy vibes but if you can ignore that would defs ask there too.

I need some advice.... I have some spends at Aspinal, so do I get the functional work bag (which would fit my laptop...save me carrying a fugly laptop bag round) or the absolutely not needed but adorable clutch?

Love that clutch! I am obsessed with raffia 😍
A tote is useful but I have to say, so are clutch bags especially in summer when you just need your phone keys and a lipstick
ETA - clearly I don't have kids, this is from a childless perspective haha

Normally a big fan of raffia but I'm not loving the pouch for some reason, I'm not convinced it would wear that well based on its shape? I loove that blue tote though, such a nice summery colour and a big fan of a bag big enough to slide the laptop into.

The lack of strap is putting me off the Raffia. It's all very stressful 🤣
