Does anyone else gets weird looks or 'mean' comments about their spendings on designers?
I've been following these big houses (Chanel, LV, Gucci, etc.) from my teens and I'm only now starting my collection and I find the behaviour of Chanel specifically very off putting. Does anyone else feels this way?
I would also like your opinions on this: https://press.ruslanbaginskiy.ua/projects/endless-summer-stories/world

Who gives you the weird looks and mean comments? I had a really bizarre experience in Flannels in Liverpool once when a sales assistant accused me of wearing, then ripping a dress and bringing it back for a refund, when what actually happened is it had a rip in it and the tags still on, and I brought it in and asked for an exchange. When I pointed that out to her and asked why I would ask for an exchange for the exact same dress if I wanted a refund she said "you tell me" 😂 Lunatic.

I think sometimes when I have just gone in for a browse, and the sales assistant is on my back asking me loads of stuff its annoying and feels a bit unwelcoming. But I generally find the staff in the actual brands stores so much nicer and attentive!

In terms of people you know, I don't know another soul who is in to following designer fashion, the history behind it etc like I am (I love this thread so much because of this) People know it is expensive/luxurious but nobody knows how much. Because of this nobody really realises the cost of things to make comment which I suppose is lucky 😂

I love option 4 of that

I posted a pic here - got some Roger Vivier flats and LK Bennett heels ❤❤ may not be the big brands but they're designer and in my size which has never, ever happened in my entire life 🤣

Usually friends & family. I had this one friend once that told me I should return a Dionysus bag that I just had bought because it's better to have my money in the bank. Meanwhile she is out partying almost every single day, buying tones of shein and Allieexpress stuff. Not trying to shame her for doing so because people can choose to spend their money however they please but it did bothered me that she felt like she needed to comment on mine while she is not living by her own comment.

WOW! I wouldn't know how to handle that and I would probably feel so uncomfortable.

Omg yes! I have a friend who isn't in to designer because it is expensive and thats where the line is drawn. She never has any money spare but she always has fast fashion parcels delivered 😂 I'd argue my net spend over the last 5 years is less than hers.

It was so awkward. They offered to sew the hole up for me because they didn't have another in my size and I couldn't be refunded. I don't shop there anymore. I know it won't affect their business but still its the principal

I grew up around a lot of designer, my cousins and sister are all really into fashion so it was the norm for me really, but when I go out on my own I feel quite exposed. I don’t know how to put it but I suddenly become really aware of my items, particularly jewellery and feel uncomfortable walking alone or on public transport. I don’t get mean looks though, thankfully

I find it so intimidating though when sales associates are up my ass when I’m browsing 😭 I like to look around and if I need help, I’ll ask. Sometimes they just follow me or stare at me and I feel like leaving

It did happen to me when I was in Milan haha. I went to some boutiques in my quite basic outfit and the sales associates looked me up and down and disregarded me it felt like. A day later I went again, took my Chloé bag with me an put on nice shoes and all of a sudden they were super nice to me. It didn't bother me too much because I knew I would make a purchase there, but the difference in approach made me giggle

My mom always has been a big saver and that's how I grew up (making us feel slightly poor when we really weren't). When I was 13 and bought clothes from h&m and zara for the first time, it made me feel rich. I don't know if it's a good thing because now when I see a dress that costs € 50, I still hesitate to buy it because in my mind it's very expensive... It does help me to think twice about buying something. I bought my first designer item from some inheritance money so I feel like towards my family, that justified my spending 😂 I should do whatever I want with the money I work hard for but spending € 2K on a purse does leave me feeling guilty. Can anyone relate?

I generally don't feel guilty as I will only buy something if I can afford it. I do sometimes have a fleeting sense of guilt but that passes quick. I do always make sure I use the stuff I buy though. I don't get it when people buy a designer item and never use it as they are worried about it - what's the point?!

Can anyone help me with the VAT refund situation now. I saw an influencer bought some Cartier in Paris. She got a Love ring which she said was about £30 cheaper than England. She also then managed to claim the VAT back at the airport in Paris. Has anyone done it? If it's worth it I'm tempted to hop on the Eurostar to Paris for a day of shopping.

This is the exact same for me tbh. I grew up really poor. Nobody in my family likes designer stuff - no idea where I got it from! I guess it made me want to be able to afford nice things for myself? The other week my Mum was going on about people having ‘more money than sense’ buying expensive bags etc. I was sheepishly shuffling to hide my Chanel haha, she would have a heart attack if she knew how much it cost. I don’t care though. Some people spend thousands a year on cigarettes, alcohol, whatever. I’m not going to feel bad about liking bags and shoes, it took me four degrees to get a job where I could afford them, I reckon I’ve paid my dues 😂

Yep, I got a bag in September from Chanel St. Tropez. The sales assistant took my card and passport when he was packing it all up for me, not sure what he did because I was sat by the pool in the shops courtyard when he did it, but then all I had to do at the airport was go to a kiosk, scan the barcode on the paper he gave me and the refund (just under £100) went back on to my credit card a couple of weeks later. Definitely worth catching a cheap flight and enjoying a few nights away when making a big purchase now 😄

My ex and his family were a bit vocal and judgey about my LV bag(it was a 21st birthday present. This was 2011 when you could still get a really good sized bag for £500) but they were all massive hypocrites considering my ex was a big gamer who splashed cash on games/consoles/PlayStation points etc and his parents smoked like chimneys and drank a fair amount.
I also got LV for my 18th which some people weren’t exactly rude about but they couldn’t understand why I chose that and not something else,at the time holidays to party islands were a popular 18th present at my collage alongside the usual driving lessons/cheap cars. Those things never interested me and I’ve still got and use that bag so 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️.

I hate Flannels! Their items and shops are lovely but their customer service is exactly the same as you get in Sports Direct🙄 they are trash! You can’t ring any stores direct, their customer service number is a premium rate number, the whole place is a joke.

I find most designer shops a bit daunting, but I think the anxiety comes from me, perhaps? Chanel in Manchester has a couple of snotty SA’s but in the main they’re nice enough.

You’re friend shouldn’t be passing comment on how YOU spend YOUR money!! 😠 I’d be so cross if one of my friends questioned my spending. She obviously doesn’t realise that buying these pieces is actually an investment. She could also be a tad jealous

I like your style!! Unfortunately I know nothing about tax refunds etc. It might be worth looking up Martin Lewis’ website as he seems to have all the useful knowledge regarding money.

I agree with what you said about Flannels. The only reason I’ll use them is because a friend of a friend works there and she can use her discount for me 🤪 Mwuhahaha the people x
