... Can we bleeping not? It really pisses me off when people, male or female, eroticise young girl's friendships. None of her interests/antics seem genuine to me. It’s definitely an interesting topic, being in my early 20’s I do feel like a teenager in an adult’s body sometimes and it’s a common feeling among lots of women. What’s more interesting is the dichotomy between teenage girls being told they mature faster than boys and treated as mini adults (especially if you’re an older sister) and the realizations we have once we’re actual adults.

There are lots of media that portray the subject in an interesting and nuanced way but on her social media, as with her writing, Dakota strips conversations of substance and boils them down to aesthetics (Mary Jane shoes and white tights? to represent girlhood? groundbreaking).

Her book recommendations really look like those of a teenage girl who just discovered classic books.

How are you a writer who has (does she yet?) a degree in literature and the most you can come up with for gothic fiction is Frankenstein, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Angela Carter, Edgar Allan Poe, Carmilla and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?

Those are a given when you’re talking about the genre and do not need to be recommended, much less from someone who makes a living out of books. Come on, she could, at the very least, sprinkle some Matthew Lewis and Charlotte Dacre in there.

Ive already read Jane Eyre but if I havent, I wouldnt wanna know about the plot twist/s.

I’d think of novels such as “The Mysteries of Udolopho” by Ann Radcliffe for example or for something slightly more contemporary (if the 90s count; not really gothic I guess, but the vibes are there) “An instance of the fingerpost” by Iain Pears. Both books are widely known, but still not as “basic” as her recommendations in the video

I’m not gonna lie, the gas mask guy being Italian and a little ~too~ into aristocracy and old military gear is a little suspicious to me.

I know many people love vintage stuff while rejecting vintage values (I love antiques too) but this whole friend group gives me weird vibes in the worst way plus they don’t really seem to have many non-white friends.

I don’t like to make assumptions through social media posts, Dakota herself seems to have some progressive views and I even noticed she tends to behave differently when she’s in more diverse spaces but having suffered xenophobia myself I’m always a little weary of certain types of people and they ring some alarms. Definitely not a group I’d want to pursue a friendship with.

Sometimes I wonder how Donna Tartt feels about an entire generation making her book a hit again only for the point to fly completely over their heads.

It is to be expected when you write satire I guess, the thing is she wasn’t even subtle with it and made fun of the characters all throughout the book, I don’t understand how so many people idolize them. If these people were teenagers maybe, but now fully grown adults.
