I'm a secondary teacher and I totally understand parents keeping children off school at the moment - if my son was at school (he's only a toddler) - and I wasn't a teacher, obviously - I would not send him to school. I totally get that for pupils this situation is far from ideal, but as important as education is, health and life must come first. Exams, qualifications etc will be sorted out eventually.
I'm so frustrated by the lack of clarity from the government regarding anything - I'm asthmatic, and like lots of others have mentioned I'm not sure if it's advised that I isolate. The WHO have said that asthmatics are more at risk of becoming more severely ill with the virus, but I don't know if my condition is 'severe' enough to warrant isolation. Either way, I don't feel like I could. I'm expected to be in work as long as schools are open and potentially expose myself to the virus because childcare is needed. I understand that there are reasons to keep schools open at the moment - such as many parents work in the health service - but how have other countries overcome these issues with school closures? Teachers will not be actually teaching soon anyway - it will just be childcare due to staff shortages and large numbers of children/multiple classes joined together. (I know that many people in other professions including the health service will of course have to continue going to work too, and I'm by no means saying my concerns are as/more important - I'm just frustrated). My sister works for the NHS in a local hospital where there have been confirmed cases and deaths and has been told that she cannot wear a mask due to her asthma.
My husband works in IT and could do all of his work from home - but his boss said today that he had no plans to have staff work from home until it is enforced by the government - he won't be acting on what is just 'advice.' These things need to be enforced sooner rather than later.
There are quite a few confirmed cases in my area and so far my school has not even addressed the issue at at all - with staff or students. It's not been mentioned at all and no additional measures have been put in place - just rumours amongst staff of plans 'behind the scenes' for if/when we have lots of staff absent and finding ways to keep the school running.
I'm becoming increasingly stressed and concerned about the whole situation, but a lot of people I know don't seem to be taking the situation very seriously. I feel like I just want to lockdown my family now
watching what other countries are doing differently worries me. I hope more is done in the UK soon
Sorry, that ended up being a long rant!
