I trained as a speech pathologist, and his speech and language abilities are definitely concerning. I would be expecting a 3 year old to speak in full sentences with reasonably correct grammar, but he isn't - at least not on camera. His speech is pretty unclear, which wasn't helped by Colleen reinforcing pronunciations like 'dar-dar' for car. He also has really unusual intonation - like he's asking a question every time he speaks.
Yes, the intonation is very unusual, doesn’t make sense..

I think he’d have self-corrected if exposed to other children, so it’s really unfortunate they keep him so isolated

I always wondered why she is reinforcing his incorrect words

It's a real shame he hasn't gone to preschool or at least socialised with children outside of his family. That would also help with the egocentric attitude he will inevitably get.

I've spoken to parents who do this, and they usually say something like "If my child wants to call an ambulance a 'wah-wah', I want to take their lead so they understand what I'm talking about" but then they are shocked when the child never learns multi-syllable words, and get picked on by their peers for not knowing the proper words. There's a time and place for child-centered rearing, but language development is not one of them. No point regressing adult language so much that a distorted form is all the child ever hears.

yes, i think it would have been fine if he was being exposed to other children. i think for now some kind of online preschool could be good for him?

It's all good and well he see's his cousins to have any kind of other age appropriate interactions, but his cousins are (lazily) homeschooled and lack serious social skills and age development skills as it is.

I agree, although I really like Jess and Chris in some aspects of their parenting, their older children are going to benefit so much if they send them to public school…

Flynn also needs interactions with kids out of his extended family, otherwise the same mistakes get amplified.

Why did Flynn get an toy ambulance for Colleens birthday?! this kid is going to have some serious sharing, not only things but attention, issues when he’s older.

Also his speech is concerning, I thought he was younger than 3 and assumed not really socialising with the pandemic probably has slowed development. I used to tutor kids from 4 up and even the kids that had just turned 4 but had some issues keeping up and focusing (some also just had pushy parents) so we’re getting extra help we’re speaking full sentences and clearly.

Just showed my parenter asking how old he thought this child was based of speech and he’s just said it’s how his parents describe his speech “a weird accent with no full sentences or correct pronunciation” when he was a kid and he had a lot of issues and needed a lot of speech therapy

Not to dismiss your knowledge.. but I really think you are all being overly harsh about his speech. I admit I haven't watched a lot of their videos.. but he isn't even 3 yet. A child who is 2yr 11mo is far less developed than a child who is 3yr 6mo. They change so fast. I used to assess the speech of 4yr olds before they start school, and I really don't think Flynn sounds like he is 'delayed' at all.

His speech in the "Flynn tries my breastmilk" video is pretty bloody good.

I agree. Now, granted I am not trained as a speech pathologist, but my child is in speech therapy right now and I honestly have no idea where this "speaking in full sentences with reasonably correct grammar at 3" metric is coming from. Based on the information I have, an average 3 year old should be using 3-4 word sentences and be able to be understood by someone who is not a caregiver at least 50% of the time. And Flynn isn't even 3 yet!

He may have some slight delays based on Colleen not reinforcing proper word usage, but I don't think he's severely delayed the way some are talking

I think where Flynn is being fed a disservice is that yes he doesn't really socialise with children his own age but mainly he's having a lot of his life publicly displayed for entertainment. It is a gross exploitation of his private life and his childhood. The fact we, the general public, witness and are able to comment on things like his developmental progress is very sad.

I don't get the whole Flynn getting presents when it's someone's birthday! It was the same on Eric's birthday. ...he got things he could do with Flynn like a bug catching set 🙄. Actually was the same on Colleen's dad's birthday too, didn't he get a fire truck!

Personally I think Flynn's speech is fine for his age, I have worked with kids and have my own of which a few have had speech delay. I do think he needs to be around more children though and realise that although his family adore him he isn't going to be the centre of everyone's universe. He is gonna be in for a shock when the twins come home.

Also got ice cream and a truck for coreys birrhday.

I think the main issue in my opinion with Flynn’s speech is not how he’s currently talking, it’s that the way he’s talking hasn’t really improved in the last few months. And the continual use of baby talk by everyone around him and lack of socialisation with other children that aren’t his family (who need socialisation themselves) is a detriment. But there’s no opportunity for further development speech wise or socially or emotionally and the longer you wait the harder it will be.

Sorry for double post, but surely using baby speak and using words the kids use so that the kids can understand and be understood like “wah wah”, will just isolate them. You may know what a word is and you’ve now reinforced to your child that this word means something, but no one else does.

my mum use to give me and my sister 1 present on each others birthday (it would be something cheap e.g a colouring book or a magazine compared to what the other sister was getting e.g a bike or dolls) until we were 10 however she never did it on other peoples birthday.

also hi!, long time lurker here! one think that really irks me is colleens mother and her competitive behaviour against her own children and grandchildren.

I think they take Flynn out to choose someone a present, so he obviously chooses something he wants. Its would be nice if they pointed him more towards a gift the other person would like.

Happy birthday to her but how inappropriate is Erik posting her picture in skimpy underwear ew
He wanted to show off her pre pregnancy oft, which will probably trigger her body issues.

Also her face looks like it’s melting

The extra skin on her face? It's something I've never really witnessed before. It isn't noticeable currently but I guess in a few weeks it will be

She probably picked the picture. She is obsessed with being seen/perceived as the skinny one. And she's too much of a control freak to let Erik decide. I believe she wrote the caption too

I think she knows she has an ED. I also think she knows that the symptoms of an ED are more than physical appearance, they are behavioural too. I think she knows in order to protect her habits and deter criticism she ensures she includes food content and when that food is always something like apple sauce and a batch of cookies she knows to caveat the obviously-not-a-real meal with it being a "craving" for example. I think she gets defensive about any criticism about her physical appearance because she's scared someone would have her change her behaviours and her behaviours are her control and comfort but it is her behaviours that illustrate her ED struggles, not necessarily her size.
I think you're onto something there. Those with eating disorders and other mental health queries typically like to control the narrative to imply it isn't there and deceive others into believing they are eating, engaging etc. I have found it strange her conversations regarding other issues ( and by no means am I diminishing anyone's hardship's and struggles with issues like those) however, her skin picking thing really seemed to distract from the comments surrounding her physical health and then miraculously she was diagnosed with ADHD which isn't consistent with her shown behaviours (not her exaggerated ones) which makes me believe she goes to any lengths to distract from the truth and cling to the victim narrative. Myself and one of my siblings have ADHD and autism and my parent is a doctor of SEN specifying in safeguarding and neuro conditions. They stated not once has colleen indicated she has that , more than likely manipulating her behaviours and symptoms to what the psychologist wants to hear and it vastly covered up other unanswered concerns. It takes months and months if not years to gain diagnosis' of neuro diverse conditions yet she mentioned it on the vlog channel and was suddenly diagnosed very quickly. She is discrediting and diminishing others diagnosis'.

I’ve thought this too but didn’t want to offend people who actually have adhd. I did used to know people who abused adhd medication for diet and work and Colleen has said that she was on medication for it prior to her pregnancy. Not sure when she can take it again. 😬

This would explain her super rapid weight loss and also manic work energy… Add**** is abused for that 2 very reasons.
