Had anyone else noticed how with Flynn and before the twins were born she constantly said how she thinks gender stereotypes for kids are so stupid, such as toys and colours like blue being for boys and pink being for girls. Yet as soon as the twins were born and she went shopping for their clothes they’ve both been in such stereotypical boyish/girlie clothing. We all knew her consciousness about gender neutrality was performative but she’s really exposed it with her clothing choices for the twins. Like it’s okay to want to dress your little girl up in bows and tutus and your little boy up in blue clothing, but there’s no need to make a big deal of it in the past to the extent that she gave Flynn a bunch of traditionally girls toys to see if he’d like them. and also during one of the gender reveals (I think it was Flynn’s) didn’t she choose different colours for the genders? I think for the girl it was purple because she didn’t like how specific colours were associated with genders.
While I do think you should not force gender stereotypes onto children (or people in general), here's my stance, there isn't anything wrong with dressing your one year old daughter up as a princess, however if that one year old is now three and has expressed to you that she doesn't want the Barbie in the toy shop, she wants the remote control car and you tell her "no, that is for boys, Barbie's are for girls" then that is reinforcing gender stereotypes, it would be the same if it was reversed with a son as well.
I am a very stereotypical girl, my favourite colour is pink, I love fashion, growing up I loved Barbie, baby dolls and Disney Princesses and I love to bake, sew and do crafts, however, a long time during my childhood, I had a love for pirates, I used to dress up as one and carry a (plastic) sword with me around the house. My parent didn't care what I played with or what I liked (as long as it was appropriate), they cared that I was happy and I had fun, which is much more important than what section in the toy shop or clothing store a child wants to buy from, if they are happy and comfortable, why should there be a problem?
Colleen doesn't realise that you can like aspects of gender stereotypes and that is fine, but what isn't fine is pushing that onto your child who is their own person, as a baby they don't really have a say so I don't see why not, also it is hard to escape gender specific clothing and toys, but when that child is old enough to make decisions like what they are playing with or what they wear, then follow their lead. You can have input but don't make it about gender as that isn't necessary and negatively affects a child.
To me, Colleen seems like the type of person who only says something (like gender stereotypes are stupid) because she sees other people say it and thinks she'll earn some sort of points but the thing is, she doesn't even know what they are talking about or why they say it. Most of the time it is trans people and trans allies saying that as gender stereotypes hurt trans children/people growing up, which is understandable but at the same time, they aren't saying a child or a person cannot like stereotypical things, they are saying not to force it and to listen to your child, there is a difference.
Colleen seems so fake and uneducated on the subjects she talks about.
