I've been slowly getting better over the years to be completely apathetic to it all (it is hard though as it's everywhere)

Probably just going to work it this year to get it over with quickly.

I’m dreading Christmas this year, I can’t afford it for one, I split with my ex husband just before last Christmas & we agreed to tell our kids we had split up after Christmas but he had other plans & told the kids Christmas Day we had split up (he was still living in the house, sleeping separately) he told the kids it was me seeing someone else as well when it was actually him, he ruined it for them them & they will never forget & I just feel so sad for them still to this day! I literally have no money & I’m devastated for them I really am, I know it’s not all about money but nowadays it feels like it is, so much competition all the time.

How old are your kids?

Honestly as they get older they will understand everything you did for them, which will be more important then not getting as many gifts as their friends or neighbours.

So glad this thread exists!!
I really really struggle in the darker months and find it hard to cope.
I hate that by 1st September, consumerism says summer is over and bombards you with Christmas rit 3 months early.
I don't mind Christmas, although I think the pressure of it gets ridiculous and I do think it's just a way of covering up how tit winter is...

I've also found that people who put their trees up very early, end up taking it down on boxing day etc because they're sick of the clutter!!

As an immigrant I really don't understand Britain's obsession with Christmas tbh. From the people to the shops stocking Christmas stuff before Halloween (not exactly a huge holiday here but still!)

I think it's a bit of a tit holiday once you get older. I'm not entirely sure what I want for Christmas these days (as a kid is so exciting to be getting toys that you specifically asked for), and if I want something it's probably a practical thing that doesn't feel like a 'gift' in a way

Granted, I'm not the most family-orientated person so I miss that key element too, and it really sucks to be surrounded by people who aren't missing that element from Christmas. The media also builds it up to be that for the most part too

Christmas songs also get annoying really quickly, but at least the movies are somewhat interesting

I used to love Christmas! I was rarely bought anything through out the year as a child and even on our birthdays we were treated very moderately. So anything me and my siblings wanted, we would have to wait until then so Christmas was always a big deal. Christmas would be a classic family affair, which was stretched out by visitors/visitings. My mum adored Christmas and would go out of her way to make it extra special for us. Even as an adult. Visiting my mum's house as Christmas always had this relaxed fun vibe where all the family wanted to be. But after she died she kind of took the 'magic' of Christmas with her.

The run up for the past 4-5 years especially has been absolutely disgusting. Mass consumerism, pressure to buy other adults presents that probably won't ever get used. One use wonder tat filling every shop. Even Christmas decorations have become boring, samey and to be quite frank, unchristmassy.

Christmas day itself has been great. I spent last Christmas at my dad's, which we all made fun and quite traditional and I intend to spend this christmas there too. It makes me more happy than anything to see my dad, (who I don't get to see often through out the year and has never been a fan of Christmas) beam in pride that he has all his children and grandchildren around. Anything else really I've come to unlike.

My eldest children stopped believing in Santa at around 7-8 but that was several years ago and was quite late compared to their peers. I believe it's much earlier now with how easily accessible information is to younger ones via social media, internet.

These days the fanfare starts way too early so by the time it has come to mid December, I've kind of had enough! And it is the social media staging of it that does it.

You're proving them with a loving home and somewhere they can actually feel safe. That means a lot more then £££ items.

But maybe you could get something for the 10 year old+ grandchild only and smaller food items for the others?

All old enough to understand that if you cant afford anything much then so be it. Just have the meal which you can do really cheaply.X

Quite interesting reading through this thread. I am slowly being to dislike Christmas more and more.

I think it's the work politics and the fuss everyone makes about having to be at work or on call that's really winds me up tbh. They have all chosen this career, and we can't be off. It's not even like we are shop workers and need to be in at the crack of dawn. We do get the bank holidays off, unless it's your turn on duty and that doesn't happen that often!

I love buying gifts. I really try to be practical about what I buy and avoid 'tat' that will just end up in a cupboard.
I enjoy buying the tree and decorating the house
Christmas dinner is fine, but it's just a glorified Sunday lunch. Christmas parties, meh. The TV is rit!

I would love Christmas to be like when I was younger, going to my Grandma's for 11am and seeing all my cousins and aunts/uncles. Then the family would come round to ours in the evening. We would eat SO much I honestly don't know how my mum did it. We'd play card games, watch TV that I remembered being good. Boxing day would be similar.

My husband and I wanted to do something different last year, so we ate on Christmas Eve and then chilled out all Christmas Day. This year we are going to go for a walk in the lakes and take a flask of boozy coffee or some prosecco. I would love that to be a tradition for us.

Can’t stand Christmas, it really triggers my MH. I always look into volunteering with the homeless or something as I find being in the house really bad. I wish the day away, I always keep busy by being the one to cook the dinner. I’ve got a younger brother so I always make it special for him but yeah, it’s a hard day. And the build up, don’t get me started…

I went into B&M end of July, beginning of August and they had Christmas items in .. my mood plummeted. I've always disliked Christmas and its fakeness. I normally spend the whole period with the homeless and elderly etc. but covid put paid to that last year and now I cant stand very long or walk very much, so I expect this year I won't be doing that either.

Christmas should be a lovely relaxing time, but consumerism put paid to that.

exactly, if it was just december I wouldn't mind, the fact that there are already christmas foods in the shops is ridiculous. I actually really liked the laid back xmas we had in lockdown last year

I don't mind the lead up to Christmas but I spend Christmas day alone and sleep most of the day
