I'm childfree and intend to keep it that way. I'm a les so I'll never have to deal with a whoopsie pregnancy anyway.

When I was young I was adamant I wanted children, but now I'm adamant I don't and that I won't change my mind.

I have nieces and nephews who I adore, but I love being able to hand them back when they start getting on my nerves. 🤣

I don't intend to have a child who'll have to deal with all of the crappy things I have, and how crappy the world can be in general.

I do worry about being old and not having kids but I've known old people left alone in nursing homes indefinitely who do have kids, so there's no guarantee there'll be anyone to look after you anyway.

I have two children and one that passed away at birth. I also struggled with infertility and we had plenty of times where we contemplated what it would be like to remain childless. To us we didn’t feel we were lacking as a couple, just that we did want children.

To be honest growing up I never really envisioned having kids. Don’t worry this isn’t ‘maybe you haven’t decided’ bull, but thinking of my family, the members who have had children are in the minority. Without prying into why they are childfree (because it’s not my business), I grew up seeing lots of family members go out and have fulfilling lives without having children, so it feels normal to me that a life with children is just one of a few options, and it did give me comfort and hope during dark times.

I’m 30 and child free (love that term rather than childless)! I do want children in the future.. but it’s not the right time at the moment.

what annoys me most is when no one around you is excited for any other accomplishments apart from getting pregnant or getting married. It’s like they are the only good paths for women to go down. No one is excited for job promotions, career goals, travel or anything else.
I’m aiming to go back to university to further my career... the main question I get is “what about children?” How rude! I want to focus on my career, be comfortable financially and then have 1 or 2 children max. AND THATS FINE. And even if I didn’t have children, that’s fine too!

My SIL has 2 children and she is forever moaning about them, shouting, screaming, stressed, running around. I think she thinks im lazy because whenever she comes over I’m chilling doing whatever I want to do, watching tv, baking, a new hobby 🤣

I have to say, I’m very happy to be child free in a global pandemic

This thread reminds of an article I read a while ago - The mothers who regret having children - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-43555736

It is quite a taboo subject to talk about.

Also, this dialogue from House of Cards TV series:

Hannah C: Do you ever regret not having children? (After an uncomfortable silence she continues) I'm sorry that was too private.
Claire U: No, do you ever regret having them?

Burn.

I’m 39 this year and childfree. Have been with my husband 15 years and married 10 years this year (where did those 10 years go!). We always thought we’d have children but every year booked big trips, weekends away, music festivals etc and said we’ll talk about it next year. Well eventually we realised neither of us had that desperation some people have to have children and if neither of us are bothered we shouldn’t do it. So far I’m not regretting it! Got time and money to do what we want. And it’s not that I don’t like kids, I love our friends kids and nieces and nephews, I just like being able to only see them for a short time.

I think it took a while for our parents to realise we weren’t just putting it off but none of them mention it anymore. I do feel a bit bad for my mum as her mates all have grandchildren and neither me or my sister have kids but I can’t have a child for her. My mother in law has loads of grandchildren so she’s sorted!

I might live to regret it but I don’t think I will. I know people say you’ll be lonely in old age but you could have kids and they move away or you fall out or just aren’t close. Nothing is guaranteed and it’s certainly not a reason to have kids.

It’s a bit rubbish when so many of your mates have kids and it changes your social life but fortunately I have good friends who are also child free as well as friends who like to still have the odd night out (well when you could!). With WFH and lockdown I’m glad I only have to think about me and my husband.

We’re more or less exactly the same as you and your husband, just eight years older and a few more years of marriage under our belts, and still not regretting it!

I'm childfree and pleased. I get asked on a daily basis if I have kids and if I'm married etc. I've been single for 3 years now. I'm 33. I lived with my ex for a long time and I knew I didn't kids. My friends and family would always say oh you'll change your mind. They're life changing etc etc but in new I wanted a life of holidays and adventures. Even now I know I have made the right decision. I do like babies and kids. I'm a Godmum and I love my godchildren but I'm also very selfish with my free time and with my money and I get judged for it by society tbh.

I'm 33 and been married for a couple of years. We have successful careers, own our home and travel frequently (pre covid) and I don't think we will ever have children as we love our lifestyle and freedom.
We do get criticized, 'put on the side' by other couples, told we are making the wrong choices and even labeled lazy because of that and it's totally fine by us.
I just wish society could understand that not everyone wants kids and stop treating us like outsiders.

A a question for couples on here. When you met your current partner, did you tell them straight away you didn’t want children? When do you bring it up?

Yes 100%.

I have a SIL who doesn't think I'm worth talking to because I don't have kids. I have nothing against kids in fact I have close friends who have kids and I love to spoil them. SIL sees this and slags me off to anyone who will listen but I'm sorry if I'm not worth talking to then why should I spend my time and money on her kids when I have friends and other relatives who still see me as a person and not just as a cash mashine?

I worked with my husband for a long while before we ever even got together and in conversations I made my stance on kids clear before, during and after we got together. I couldn't hide something as big as that, it wouldn't be fair and I didn't want it to end in tears later.

Well it still might of course but at least I have been honest from day 1 (and before haha).

I am 37 and childfree. This might be a long one.

I have always known I did not want to have children, and never wavered, even knowing I am fast approaching the end of my fertile years.
I have always been very upfront about this with every potential partner (I would find a way of bringing it up in conversation pretty early during dating to just not waste our time) which has scared away quite a few men.
Luckily, I am now in a relationship with someone who also isn't interested in having children.

I have heard the most horrible things when I say I don't want children, from being selfish, to hating kids, and even called a freak. I will admit babies bore me to death and toddlers just annoy me, but I just LOVE kids from 4 years on. They are such fun to be with! I couldn't actually do my job if I didn't like them, as I mostly work with school kids. I actually spend more time daily with kids than most parents do.

A couple of friends of mine have children and they just adore me. And I really enjoy being with them. I just don't think I'd enjoy it full time.
I am an introvert and NEED to be alone and in silence quite a lot for my well being. With a kid, you just lose all that. I actually feel you lose your personality. I see it happening. You just become "mum". A diluted version of yourself. Just check the insta bios of your friends when they become mothers. They no longer are "A life fueled on wine and cheese", they are "mom to (insert name)". Sorry, but I don't want to give up who I am.

The whole "who will take care of you when you're old" argument is just ludicrous. First, if that's your reason for having kids, you're being pretty selfish (which I get called often). Second, who says you're not going to be a tit parent and not deserving of their care? Or that your children won't be little people who won't care about you? Third, what if you have a disabled child who will need YOUR care all their lives? Who will take care of them when you're gone?

"Oh, but you'll never feel the TRUE LOVE a child brings", yeah, and also the relentless worry for the rest of your life. I'm already an anxious person as it is, I don't need that extra worry in my life - I wouldn't cope.

Seriously though, nobody does a worst job of trying to convince me to have kids than parents themselves. "It's so hard, the hardest thing I've ever done." I know. Trust me, I am aware of how hard it is. That's why I don't have them. I think most people who have kids just didn't really realize how much work it would be.

I know I am too self-centered and appreciative of my freedom to have kids. I also hate the idea of having someone depending on me on that level. Its is much better to aknowledge it and act in accordance than to bring a child into the world who would most likely make me miserable and, in turn, be miserable. I have never been so sure I made the right decision. I got a contraceptive implant put in last year and my nurse said "you can come take it out when you change your mind". I replied "See you in 3 years, when I'm due to switch to a new one".

For anyone who needs an answer that will shut up people when they ask "when will you have kids", back when I ~cared about what others thought, I would answer "When God wants me to". That would be the end of the conversation, as they'd mostly be left thinking I was struggling to conceive and would leave me alone. Now I just DGAF and say "never".

Apologies for the long rant. I just always have A LOT to say on this subject and sometimes come across as angry when debating it. I am in no way criticizing those who choose to have kids as I think it takes a lot of bravery and selflessness. It's a beautiful thing. I'd just like for society to accept that being childfree is A CHOICE and it is just as valid .

I think I've posted here somewhere before, but worth it again.

Childfree and content here. I'm 36. TBH, I always assumed I would have children, it's not something I've specifically avoided. However, as I've gotten older I just kept thinking next year, next year and now I realise I just want to keep having fun with my husband.

My friends and colleagues are often complaining about their lack of sleep, or that they've no one to watch the kids, or that the house is untidy, or the stress of teenagers. Yep I'm sure they are lovely, but kids seem to add a lot of stress and worry.

I hear people calling childfree people selfish - don't really get that. I am self involved perhaps, but selfish is a weird word. Who is suffering from my choice, not the overpopulated world that's for sure!

I would be very intrigued by how many parents regret having their children.

Also, the argument that you never know love like it. Well, I don't know that I'm 'missing' so it's fine.

All my maternal instincts are hardwired towards animals 😂 I always say I'm great with babies. As long as they have fur and four legs.

Shockingly, I'm childfree.

I did yes, although we changed our mind for a couple of months then went back to no kids. I have recently lost friends because of our decision

I suppose this isn't the best approach if you're very young, but I'd always bring it up on the first date by asking if they have kids. When asked back if I have any, I'd just answer "nah, that's not for me". There, done.

SAME. I was in the presence of a baby and a puppy once and had to make the very conscious decision of acknowledging the baby first, as what would naturally come to me would be OMG TINY PUPPER
