I feel really conflicted about tretinoin. I have been using it for a couple of months now, you can buy it over the counter where I live for less than €10 a tube. On the one hand it does give fantastic results, my skin is smooth, even and it did something amazing to my pores. On the other hand it is true what Jessica deFino says, it does not feel like 'taking care' of my skin.
It is harsh and sometimes my skin feels almost sunburnt and incredibly dry. Then, yes, my morning routine has to be very rich to counteract these affects. So it's a cycle which I feel is probably not very good longterm.
Does anyone else use prescription strength tret and how do you manage it?
I’ve been using it since April, started on 0.025% for the first month and 0.05% since then. I use the same cleansers as before (Body Shop Camomile cleanser followed by Beauty Pie double phase) but have to be a bit more gentle with the flannel, and I use the Emma Hardie balm cleanser 1-2x a week for a bit more oil. I then use a mist, let that sink in, then the tret, and then after 30 minutes I use a facial oil or The Ordinary Natural Moisturising Factors (I think that’s the name? The one that’s just a normal moisturiser and no other ‘stuff’).
I’ve had a few patches of peeling but nothing too bad, but my skin definitely needs these richer moisturisers than I was using before. It’s been worth it though, the texture is much better and without sounding too much like a
gob, my skin is radiant. Unfortunately its attached to a skull more suited to a gorilla than a human, but I’m making the most of what god and science gave me
The photosensitivity is my main issue though, I’ve always been the type to need SPF50 to even type the phrase ‘direct sunlight’, but now it’s ridiculous. Good thing we’ve had a pandemic that’s limited my summer fun!
