I had a feeling she was older. She def does the moody 80s teen well just a bit over the top imoI think the actress who played Karen was about 20 yrs old at the time.

Another thing- sometimes i get the feeling esp with the Grants and Bobby and Sheila in particular, that their script is well… not scripted. Does that make sense?

Tinhead was gorgeous as soon as he started to get a gay fan base they had him in his boxers every show and bare arsed at one pointBrookside taught me to never switch on a light switch during a gas leak thanks to Ron Dixon taking out half the parade in the gas explosion. As a 9 year old Susannah and Max’s kids taught me to always wear a seatbelt. That crash traumatised me (I watched it on YouTube as an adult and it was pretty tame)

This week’s episodes were the last we saw of Bobby Grant. Apparently Ricky Tomlinson walked off set hence why there was no proper goodbye scene. We just saw Sheila seeing he had emptied the wardrobe of his clothes. The scene earlier in that episode where Barry is listening at his bedroom door to Bobby & Sheila arguing downstairs I suspect was just a audio replay of a previous argument between them hence why we didn’t actually see Bobby

Today's dropped episodes are brilliant! Spoiler for those who haven't seen them yet...
At first I didn't think I had any recollection of Doreen coming back but when I saw her new hair it triggered a little something in my memory.
Also it stands out a mile when an episode has been written by Jimmy McGovern!

I must have just joined at a quiet period then.You've already missed Damon being stabbed to death, his mum being SA'd, a siege ending in a death, a dodgy light leading someone to be electrocuted and fall down the stairs to her death, a husband dying in bed next to his wife of a brain tumor he didn't know he had... Have I missed anything else?

I think this became the issue with Brookside in the 90. For me, it was about shocking the audience, for shocking’s sake.
The incest storyline is an example.
Brookside was groundbreaking in 1982, as it was nothing like other soaps - but then it felt like they needed to continue to be controversial, at every turn.
The writers also experienced a form of amnesia, forgetting who the characters originally were. The early storylines featuring Sheila, were centred on her catholic faith (Bobby’s vasectomy, Karen using contraception), but then they decide years late - that Matty was Barrie’s father. I found it quite ridiculous.
The stereotypes were heavy too. We had both Sheila and Theresa, as catholic women - their faith important to them.
I grew up in Liverpool in the 70s and 80s, in a catholic family with many friends / neighbours also catholic. Most of us not in any way strict, but the stricter catholics I knew, were nothing like Sheila and Theresa.
They went to mass every Sunday and had holy communion, but other than that - lived very “modern” lives. Living together before marriage was to be frowned upon, but not forbidden - and contraception was certainly not taboo.
I always found the characters of Sheila and Theresa quite extreme in that respect, and found them hard to relate to.
