I’ve started Young Mungo. I liked Shuggie Bain so hoping this is good too. So far I like Mungo’s character.
I do wonder if there will be much difference between the stories if that makes sense. There are a lot of similarities so far, same setting, alcoholic mother etc.

For me the stories were similar but the differences were enough for me to feel really drawn in.

I also think for me (obsessed with DS writing clearly) the same setting worked. It was like being dragged back into Shuggies world albeit a few years later.

Id say Mungo is even more bleak than Shuggie though. Its been a few weeks since I finished it and I actually feel its settled now in my own head. I did say Id given it 5 stars but a 4.5 round up and Id say that was unfair and it did deserve the 5. Usually its the opposite with me I give a book a higher rating then when looking back I think why did I do that 😂

They are very different books though but they are my stand out books recently.

I mainly read fiction, thriller, and memoir so anything surrounding those and I'm in.

I finished sorrow and bliss a few days ago and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. I loved it. Glad I didn’t save the last few chapters to read on the train though because I cried. A lot.

Some updates- I read Remote Sympathy, Detransition, Baby, Luster, Crying in H Mart and Animals recently and enjoyed them all although they're all pretty different from each other. I just started Expectation by Anna Hope and I'm not hooked in yet but it's not bad at all. I think I just have high expectations after getting into a pattern of reading books really quickly!!

Omg please tell me what you think. I loved it so much I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. I’m jealous of anyone who is yet to read it for the first time! I don’t want to start reading anything else yet (despite having a growing to read pile) because I just can’t let go of those characters yet.

I found it was quite slow but started picking up mid way, I really didn’t like any of the characters but there was a few twists and turns that kept me interested

I read Luster this week too. I thought it dealt with some big issues quite sensitively and in a very accessible way, but I just found all of the characters SO annoying. I know Edie is supposed to be young and naive, but I really just wanted to shake her and tell her to grow up. The husband and wife were pretty irritating too.

I gave Luster 3 stars. I actually bought the hardback. I could see what it was trying to do but it fell really flat for me.

I loved Detransition Baby though. I had suggested it for our Book Club once.

loved crying in h mary and detransition, baby - was really disappointed in expectation. very well written but i had a lot of general plot issues so interested to know what you think when you’ve finished it!

I finished the Bone Clocks at last! Actually ended up really liking it except the last section spoiled it a bit. One of those books to go in the 'I love but I wouldn't ever recommend to anyone' category. Bonkers.

The only character I rooted for was the poor adopted daughter!!

They were my faves from that list I think!
I'm just over halfway though Expectation and it's not really giving me what I wanted :( I agree it's well written but the structure or something is bothering me

I have similar issues in that I can buy them quicker than I can read them.

Bought like 10books at charity shops the other week. Probably another 15 on Amazon. But I still had a shelf full at home still to read. And my Amazon wishlist still has dozens and dozens of books I want to get. and I'm sure I will just keep adding and buying more.

Oh an I'm running out of shelf space very quickly.
